  The least risky option seems a dealer due to some level of protection for 6 months and I'll be buying some kind of extended warranty anyway (mentioned below). Ford C-Max seems to have nice touches like the quick clear windscreen and bluetooth audio (I think) whereas for the B Class it's just the phone that's bluetooth. Also the manual rear windows on the non-titanium Ford models is a bit poor.

  We bought the above car used in 2015, not knowing that the degas hoses were inadequate. (Ford recalled the Focus cars with the same parts, but not the CMAX models despite them being essentially the same!). Our degas hose failed this August, leading to the engine 'fully overheating, the cylinder head warping and the piston bores being internally damaged' (Ford garage report).

It would seem the loyalty shown to both brands was indeed very strong and where car making no longer occurs at Dagenham loyalty to the blue oval carries on and if course as a centre of excellence in diesel engine technology Dagenham lives on in the current diesel range of cars.

  I've just had my 1996 Golf VR6 MOT tested and the engine results are: Fast idle test CO 0.04% (max 0.30%) HC 18 ppm (max 200 ppm) Lambda 1.00 Natural idle test CO 0.02% (max 0.50%) The numbers look pretty good, but I honestly haven't a clue whether they are or not. Comments?
