  A 1976 TVR 3000M, one of only 10 ‘Martin Edition’ models made and in superb condition throughout raised a top estimate £15,000, while a tidy 1997 TVR Chimaera 4.0 V8 fetched a more typical £7900. Equally lairy but rather more antiquated was an intriguing part-finished 1941 Ford V8 Special ‘rat rod’ with a hotted up Mercury ‘flathead’ engine and Iskenderian cam which was snapped up by an Austrian bidder for £5,700. Sticking with V8s, a 1966 Ford Mustang Fastback 289Ci Automatic which still looked sharp following a rotisserie restoration in America some 20 years previously fetched the required £28,000.

  Datsun, it soon became apparent, had been entirely serious, and its 240Z was such a big hit in the USA that it even stopped supplying cars in the Japanese domestic market for a while to keep up with Stateside demand.  It became the fastest selling car in the USA since the original Ford Mustang, and customer orders were such that it would be a further 18 months before European buyers could sample what the 240Z had to offer. Which, it turned out, was a terrific combination of a torquey six-cylinder engine, rear-wheel-drive and rewarding handling, along with a smart, modern feeling cabin that made its British rivals feel old hat.

  .  6 – Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, registered GEN II, that starred in the 1968 Dick Van Dyke movie was sold by BCA twice in the 1970s. Six replicas were made, but this was the fully functional road-going Ford V6 powered car seen driving throughout the movie. The car was later bought by Chris Evans at auction in the USA for £496,415, but has lost its GEN II plate and been re-registered 772 YUJ. 5 – In the 1990s, BCA sold the actual 1964 Austin Princess Hearse that had been used for the funeral of Sir Winston Churchill in January 1965.
