Healey 100/4 Makes £43,600 at barons

Barons made a strong start to 2010 at Sandown Park on February 9th,
with the two headline cars both finding new homes. The magnificent Le
Mans-specification 1956 Austin Healey sold for £43,600, while the
beautiful 1958 Jaguar XK150 drophead coupé achieved £40,250.

‘Really good cars will always find buyers and the Austin Healey could
not be faulted. It had been meticulously restored and was beautifully
presented,” said Barons’ MD Laurence Sayers-Gillan. The XK150 was a
nice example, which had been extensively restored from a bare chassis,
but it had been equipped with non-standard transmission and other
upgrades which can put off the purist, and that was reflected in the
price achieved. However, there was a lot of interest in it and with a
bit of TLC it will make a splendid car.

The 100/4 had undergone a 10-year rebuild, starting as a rolling shell
and a box of parts, with the owner photocopying the entire parts
manual and replacing or reconditioning every single part. Barons
displayed it on a large mirror, so that those in the saleroom could
judge the quality of the work – even underneath the car – for
themselves.

The “quality always sells” point was further proved by the outstanding
1997 Aston Martin DB7 coupé in the Prestige section, which sold for a
top estimate at £21,250.

Many of the lots that sold were what could be termed ‘drivers’ cars’,
not necessarily immaculate but in good condition, excellent runners
and definitely something that the new buyers will derive a lot of
driving pleasure from. These included a bright yellow 1972 Triumph
TR6 (£8,390), a 1964 Series One Jaguar E-type fixed head (£20,685) and
a 1961 Jaguar Mark II (£14,200)

Catalogues were sold out and the hall was packed with prospective
buyers but it was noticed that there were fewer foreign buyers present
at this sale. However, with 70% of the lots finding new homes, despite
freezing weather and the Met Office promising more disruption, Barons
were pleased with this early result
