  August vehicle production 'breaks with tradition' 24 Sep 2007 (News)
  According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), there was an increase of 37.3 per cent in the number of cars and vans being made compared with one year previous. This means that some 100,200 vehicles came out of factories last month, taking 2007's total to 994,229 - itself a 0.4 per cent hike on last year. Compared to a typical August, these are high numbers, according to SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan. "August is usually a quiet month for vehicle production due to holiday working patterns, but this year it saw the best volume output since 2002," he said.

  More than 100 classics turned up at Wheeler Dealer Mike Brewer's car showroom to celebrate Drive It Day on Sunday, 26 April. The cars ranged from a 1935 Austin 7 van to a 1990 Ford Escort RS Turbo, with Mike and Edd China being reunited with the Ford Fiesta XR2, Thunderbird and Jaguar XJ 4.2C that had all appeared in previous series.  Mike said, 'Edd and I were amazed by the turnout.

  A perfect condition 69,000 mile 1070 Ford Escort Twin Cam with original Webasto roof sold for £26,320 inc, a 16,000 mile 1978 Ford Escort RS2000 sold for £9,632, but a 78,000 mile LHD Cortina 1600E failed to sell at £8,000 as did a 41,000 mile 1962 Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster, bid to £19,000.  The ambitiously estimated RHD 1959 Isetta 300 bubble car failed to sell at £8,750.

  More than half of all cars sold were powered by diesel (53.7%), and a further 1.6% were alternative fuel vehicles, powere by electricity or hybrid powertrains.  The Ford Fiesta , which was the most popular car of 2011, continues as the bestseller for January 2012, with its larger stablemate the Focus taking second place. The Volkswagen Golf was the third most popular model of the month.

  Senna’s first Monaco GP car, the 1984 Toleman-Hart TG184, sold for €1,610,000 (£1,406,187) while the 1993 McLaren-Cosworth Ford MP4/8A, fetched €4,197,500 (£3,666,335). But the car generated the most furious bidding was a 1955 Jaguar XK140 SE Michelotti Coupé, unearthed from a barn in rural Belgium. The unique barn find eventually achieving €365,500 (£319,248) – more than seven times its pre-sale estimate.

Other cars on the shortlist included the Mk1 Volkswagen Golf GTI, Renault Clio Williams and 182 Trophy, Mk2 Golf GTI, Renault 5 GT Turbo, Mk1 Ford Focus RS and Talbot Lotus Sunbeam.
