  • Hidden Hero: Audi 90 1 Nov 2019 (News)
.  With a choice of 2.0 and 2.2-litre engines with two valves per cylinder, developing 113bhp and 134bhp respectively, the 90 still wasn’t quick, but it was peppier than the four-cylinder models, with a free-revving nature and seductive soundtrack.   The 90 was available as both a front-wheel-drive or Quattro 4WD-equipped model, the latter identifiable by its side graphics and slightly raised ride height.  In 1989, Audi gave the 90 a bit more poke with a new 2.3-litre 20-valve turbo engine, developing 170bhp and finally giving the car the vigour it deserved.
  • 'Urgent action' required to combat car tyre and brake dust pollution 11 Jul 2019 (News)
As a solution, the report suggests the Government should encourage use of public transport and cycling in a bid to tempt people away from using their cars. It also says drivers should be educated on the advantages of more efficient driving styles, which could reduce tyre wear. However, experts have warned that tackling these pollutants will be difficult - as it's not easy to measure how many of them are in the air. "The automotive industry is committed to improving air quality and has already all but eliminated particulate matter from tailpipe emissions," said Mike Hawes, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

  • A Grand Monday: Morris Marina 1.3 11 Mar 2019 (News)
Launched in 1970, the Marina was British Leyland’s answer to the Ford Cortina, and unlike BL’s other family saloons, it was as traditional as they come. Rear-wheel-drive, with a choice of either the aged A-series or nearly as antiquated B-series engines, the Marina was a straightforward car - so straight forward, in fact, that it shared many of its underpinnings with the Morris Minor, a car that could trace its roots back to 1948.
  • A Grand Monday: Land Rover Discovery MPi 11 Feb 2019 (News)
While that doesn’t sound too bad, the engine really didn’t suit the Discovery’s four-wheel-drive system and agricultural character, meaning that it had the double negatives of being slower than the diesel, and barely more economical than the 3.9-litre V8. It really was the Discovery that you only chose if you had to… As a result, uptake was slow.

.  Year-to-date sales are down by 6.8 per cent, with showrooms reporting almost 80,000 fewer new car sales over the first five months of the year compared to 2017. The demise of diesel continues to be driving factor, with year-to-date sales down by a colossal 30 per cent (156,170 cars). Petrol cars continue to increase (up by 67,501) but can't plug the huge gap left by diesel. • A Grand Monday: Fiat Uno Selecta 12 Mar 2018 (News)
s=carAndClassic&id=C968753" target="_blank">This example is an Uno Selecta, which followed the 1980s trend for small CVT automatics. It's not what you'd call racy to drive, but small CVTs do have a certain charm, not least for their constant engine note and rather direct power delivery - the throttle pedal is more an on-off switch than progressive, but in true Italian style it's an eager and lively little thing.

A year after the saloon was launched, Peugeot introduced an estate version, which was not only one of the best looking large estates on the market, but also one of the most capacious. Coupled to the fact that it was also terrific to drive and the 405 was a compelling proposition. The good news doesn't end there, either. Thanks to its galvanised bodywork and simple mechanical layout, the 405 has withstood the ravages of time far better than its contemporary rivals.
