LPG Fuel economy is 20% less than petrol equivalent, but it costs 50% less to begin with.    So why oh why are LPG vehicles so unloved?

Can anyone please help several months ago the unblock diesel filter warning came on followed by anti pollution fault resulting in the car going into 3000 rpm limp mode. • Motorway vs Town 8 Nov 2010 (Forum)
What I'm looking for is something 1.8 to 2.0 litre. Not fussed about diesel or petrol but i don't think i do the miles to pay the premium on a diesel. Focus/Astra/Golf Sized. That can easily do 85 mph on the motorway with out revving as high 4k. Maybe something like a 6 speed 1.8 petrol??

  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - I may have made a mistake.... 30 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Love the car, drives well, well built etc. HOWEVER it would appear that my 9-10K miles a year is going to change drastically to 20-25k. Fuel consumption is the one downer on the Focus (max 38mpg) and I now wonder if I should chop it in quick for a diesel. Sods law I part ex'd a diesel Seat Toledo for the Focus-partly because I only done 8K miles last year in it so thought petrol would be okay.....

  • 03 Rover 25 2.0 TD IL ...should I? 19 Apr 2006 (Forum)
but apart from clutch problems it has always been mega reliable and I wouldn't mind something similar again - just not a Peugeot because of the weird pedal situation! As for why it has to be a diesel, I just prefer to spend more on the car and less on the fuel... I had a 106 1.1 and put in £20 a week, a Corsa 1.0 and put in the same, a 206 2.0 HDI and put in £25 a month and the same for the 106 1.4D.
  • Diesel engines - dimensions & tech spec 21 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Back to square one then. I don't really want an engine much below 65 bhp nor any which are especially harsh for an older diesel. However, newer diesels usually have MAFs and other electronic bits to cause maintenance problems - I think it's better to go for something simpler, which means I'm pretty much restricted to diesel engines pre-1998 or even earlier.
  • New car - old car? £7,000 down the drain? 29 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Last night the gears became difficult to select and from the feel of it - it`s the linkage - not the box. But it crossed my mind - move it on or not? The problem is that a new DPF diesel can`t do that exceptional stop start work and we have been warned off even contemplating it by a Fiat dealer. That leaves a small petrol motor - but the constant cold running - of typically a few hundred yards - half an hour parked - means almost double the fuel used.
  • 2009 Ford Mondeo 1.8 Diesel, 125bhp model - Issue with Power Loss 28 Feb 2019 (Forum)

  • Mazda 6 2006 diesel - White smoke problems 26 Jun 2015 (Forum)
I recently bought a used Mazda 6 2006 diesel car. After a couple of days, I noticed it was producing lots of white smoke especially after the engine is warm. This usually occurs when I stop at traffic lights etc. I noticed that the smoke stops for about 5 days when I drive it on the motorway for about 10 miles.
  • Diesel Auto for under £4500, What would you buy? 25 Dec 2013 (Forum)
My partner only has an automatic license and she wants to upgrade her 2003 Toyota Yaris. The yaris has been a great little car. Its reliable, Great on fuel (40mpg average around town) and nice to drive. Shes just looking for something abit bigger and classy! I want a diesel for economy and we have £4500 max to spend. Now i work for a Mercedes dealership and speaking to the tech guys i should avoid semi autos, even audis great DSG gearbox, and CVT gearboxs.
  • Ford C-MAX 1600 TDCi - Ford 1600 TDCi diesel performance issue 6 Apr 2013 (Forum)
It does this with an overboost, which increases peak torque from 270 Nm to 285 Nm for up to 15 seconds""   It smacks to me of being a fuel supply issue / software issue. Its not a blocked DPF cat or mass airflow meter.   Needless to say the main dealers are not very interested or seemingly knowledgeable.
  • All - DPF regen and low EGTs 2 Jan 2012 (Forum)
With low EGTs, the ECU has to spray disel into the exhaust gas stream to raise the EGTs to a sufficiently hightemperature to burn off the soot. Clearly this is waste of fuel since diesel burned in the exhaust does not contribute to useful work. But the more worrying problem is unburned diesel running into the sump and contaminating the oil. There is a very simple way to raise EGTs-raise the intake air temperature.
  • Honda Civic or Skoda Fabia - Fabia Estate ('08ish) or '05 Civic? can't decide 5 Oct 2010 (Forum)
I'm looking at an older 2005, 1.6 SE Honda Civic hatchback or a newer Skoda Fabia Estate deisel, maybe the 1.4 Greenline. However I'm not totally convinced that diesels are that cheap to run in the real world. People seem to get a lot less that the quoted MPG figures in the real world, also diesels need more care  and the modern ones seem to be pretty complex machines.
  • Volkswagen Sharan (1995 - 2009) - 09 2.0 Bluemotion diesel 'EGR bounce' 13 Feb 2010 (Forum)
According to the garage (unfortunately I did not test it) this stopped the effect, and VW now claim the effect is normal 'EGR bounce', a term I cannot find on the web and which I suspect they just invented! I have driven VW Sharan diesels (2 before, I am sure they had EGR valves!) for >10 years and never experienced anything like this - has anyone heard of it? It may be unrelated but I am also very disappointed with the fuel economy - only 35-40 mpg which is a little worse than my previous 10-year-old version and hardly justifies the 'Bluemotion' label!
  • Frontera diesel low idle + stall problem 20 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Got a 1999 Frontera Diesel 2.2DTI Manual with an idle problem. It starts fine and drives well until I sit at some lights etc and let the engine idle. After about 5 seconds idling, the idle drops by 100 - 150 rpm and the engine runs lumpy.
