  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 01 2.0 HDi starting problem 24 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Theres only a couple of occasions where it starts and stops straight away. Im just hoping theres a simple obvious fix rather that the immobiliser or ecu etc. Are there any obvious faults on these cars with glow plug relays or ignition problems? Just for additional info the car had a new lift pump and has a good full charged battery cheers
  • Mazda Mazda 6 (2002 - 2007) - 07 2.0d Over-revving 24 Sep 2008 (Forum)
The oil levels are fine, and the car was serviced at 12500 (now at 15000) There were no warning lights so I assume the ECU did not recognise a fault! Has anyone else had this problem and resolved it, or is there a known problem (aside from engines disintegrating elsewhere in the forums!) Performance seems normal, and the engine is running fine.
  • Diesel for 5k - avoiding a lemon 24 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I have been looking, and liking, 02-04ish SEAT Leon's and Skoda Octavia's 110 TDis, and considering a Focus TDCI, but just when I think I have found something, I get cold feet with regards to the various problems that might befall my potential purchase. Namely dodgy ECUs on the VAG 110 diesels, Octavia gearboxes that are 'fragile' and the dreaded dual mass flywheel issues that seem to afflict many newer diesels. Can anyone shed any light on the chances and/or frequency of any of these problems?
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 1997 1.3 Fitting new idle control valve 7 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I have seen lots of OEM ones on ebay for around £20 so I am going to buy one of these, however I have seen different advice on fitting. 1) Will I need to buy a new gasket? 2) Will the ECU need a reset afterwards if they what is the best way of doing this? Thanks.
  • Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - (99-04)2.2 petrol - ABS problem (UK car in Malawi) 19 Apr 2008 (Forum)
We have a car here in Africa that a customer imported from UK so different to our normal specs. however the brakes are giving a typical ABS pulsing sensation when braking at slow speeds (Brake and clutch together type speeds) and there is a significant grating noise as the vehicle stops. We cannot see any signs of grinding on discs etc and have already replaced ABS wheel sensors, ABS ECU and ABS unit plus replaced the servo (Which on this model is on LHS of bulkhead). The car had a minor accident some months ago but all seems aligned OK. We cannot u/stand why the ABS unit pulses at such slow braking speeds on ordinary roads.

  • Audi A6 + RS6 (1997 - 2004) - N reg Avant 2.0 petrol - Occasional misfire 26 Mar 2008 (Forum)
When I first got it, 10,000 miles ago I replaced the rotor arm, dis cap and plugs but the leads look fine. The fact that it can run clean makes me think it is a sender or of course the ECU. As it is not dire and not changing in its occurance I am reluctant to replace everthing or of course pay a dealer more than the value of the ncar!!. Any help appreciated. Cheers Roger
  • Citroen Xantia (1993 - 2000) - Late 1998 turbo diesel - ABS light stays on 5 Mar 2008 (Forum)
ABS light staying on, checked the obvious fuses, one under dash the other in engine bay, tried taking the ABS ECU connector block off to see if any corroded terminals, but all ok. I was wondering about doing a continuity test with my multimeter on the individual sensors to each wheel, then realised I could probably do the same thing at the ABS unit connector block end, so I had a look today and the terminals are numbered 1 to 23, numbers 8 and 9 are larger than the other 21 terminals, and it is an ATE unit and the vehicle is late '98 turbo diesel.
  • Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 99 HDI 90 not starting. 3 Mar 2008 (Forum)
He still cannot seem to find the fault. He has replaced the glow plugs and crank pully sensor and he says it needs a new ECU and a PS2 ( whatever that is ) and a new key barrel for the ignition at a total cost of over £300. Im completly at a loss to what i should do . I love the car and it never gave me any prior problems.
  • Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - 93 1.4i (C14SE) won't start. 30 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Cranking produces an occasional 'pop' but no other sign of life. The timing appears to be OK (timing light held at the pulley). I'm left with the ECU as a possibility. Any thoughts, before the men in white coats come to take me away??? (The timing belt and water pump were replaced about 2000 miles ago).
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2003 130TDCi - Erratic idle. 28 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Replaced the air filter. The old one was VERY dirty. Shame on me. Effect - slight improvement. As if the PCM (ECU in old money) was relearning how to fuel the engine correctly. 3. Added a shot of STP fuel system cleaner. The bigger bottle £15 from halfords, added to tank then filled up with shell diesel. Efffect - Car appears to be cured.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 1997 2.0 8V XSi - Stalling whilst cold 25 Jan 2008 (Forum)
The engine fault light does come on now and again in no set pattern I have been informed it might be the MAP sensor or the oxygen sensor or even the ECU. I have not had the fault code read yet, and appreciate that until this is done it's finger in the dark time. I am trying to avoid going to a garage/main dealer because I'm wary of being ripped off.
  • xsara hdi unrefined 15 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Hi there recently got a xsara 2.0 hdi 90 and basically i feel that its a little unrefined, the throttle sometimes feels like an on/off switch which can lead to a bit of an all or nothing jerky progression, i know that the throttle is electrically wired to the ecu and not a cable that goes straight to the pump (ah the good old days), so its bound to feel different (the old car was a 1.9td xantia, fantastic car!), but i feel as though you have to work very hard with the vehicle to keep it going along with smooth progression!
  • Fiesta TDCI injectors 31 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Any suggestions as to the underlying problem? I think 2002 was the first of the TDCI fiestas so maybe a design fault or ECU issue? mostly use tesco diesel in it (if thats makes any difference) any help appreciated. Thanks
  • Which Insurance Cos OK for chipped TDi's 7 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Do they require some kind of engineers report on what the upgrade is ? Will they only insure certain types of tuning box, or will they insure ECU remaps as well ? Any advice appreciated as I can't get any sense out of my insurer.
  • Mk4 Astra 1.7TD Van 6 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Once the engine is hot and he shuts it down (ie goes into the shop for his beer) and he restarts it, the turbo sometimes works but then the light comes back on and power is gone again. When the light is on, he cannot hear the turbo whistle. He tried to reset the ECU (I asume it has one because of the engine management light) by leaving the battery unconnected for a while. This did not solve it. Is there anything else it could be? I know with my XUTD engine, it's usually down to a pipe having fallen off the turbo.
  • MGF VVC - fan keeps running 21 Apr 2006 (Forum)
My local (non-MG) garage fitted a new radiator which works fine but they have pointed out that the secondary fan is running constantly. Their electrician has sent the ECU away for testing (come back OK) and suggests that the VVC unit is causing a "spike" which is interfering with the electrical circuits and causing the fan to remain on all the time. His suggested solution is to ask an MG dealer to change the VVC unit at a cost of around £600/650.
  • nissan micra - starting problem 25 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Have tried new ect sensor, injction fuse out & spinning over 30 sec, and have read the blink codes in ecu which is 55, (ie clear)! You mentioned a resistor from the main dealer, I queried my local dealer who said it was for 1tr engines only, unless you know different. this started 2 weeks ago (cold & damp) now pulling my hair out and friends who own it being very patient.
  • Audi 80 E-reg, cat puzzle 18 Nov 2005 (Forum)
The bloke told him it was definitely the right car and my father took the car to an independant garage who also say it has a catalyst. Now I thought you couldn't fit a cat to cars without fuel injection and lamda probe, ECU etc to measure the oxygen content in the exhaust and adjust the mixture accordingly?? This car definitely has a carburettor, however there is definitely also something round and cat shaped in the exhaust system.....
  • Is my QX finally broken? 16 Jun 2005 (Forum)
The car is a Nissan QX 3.0 Auto with 145k on the clock. I pulled the fault code from the car and only the knock sensor is noted by the ECU to be faulty. Any suggestion? Many thanks, Gazza
