Can anyone tell me who they have managed to get insurance through when they have chipped a turbo-diesel ?

I amconsidering buying one and getting it chipped......

I spoke to my company and can only seem to get a call-centre in india who cannot seem to get a handle on what I am asking when I ask if they will insure a chipped vehicle, and what ht elikely increase in premium is.

Wll the usual big -name Ins. Co's insure these cars, as they are hardly hot-hatchews even with the upgrades ?

What is the usual increase of premium over the standard car ? Is it in a direct % increase with the %increase in power ?

Do they require some kind of engineers report on what the upgrade is ?

Will they only insure certain types of tuning box, or will they insure ECU remaps as well ?

Any advice appreciated as I can't get any sense out of my insurer.

The insurers often get scared when someone modifies their car. Its no so much the extra power, rather that you are flagging to them that you might be interested in driving fast. For example, some insurers will load a premium if you fit a strut brace. The brace doesn't make the car go any faster - but you are flagging to them that you are the kind of driver who is interested in going round corners quickly - and therefore possibly a greater risk.

I've currently got an Ensign policy obtained through Adrian Flux insurance: www.adrianflux.co.uk/ . Its the first time I've them so I don't know how good they are in a claim situation, hopefully I will never have to find out! You may want to check out last weeks(?) Auto Express customer satisfaction survey on insurers. My premium was £23 more than a renewal quote from my old broker for my car in unmodified condition. I'm 34, got 8 years NCB, 3 points for speeding 3 years ago.

I had to put the make and model of tuning box on an additional "modified vehicle report" in the insurance forms, I had to state a 25bhp increase, but did not have to provide any certification. As it is a manufactured product ( www.tuningbox.com/ ); I assume they check with the manufacturer. For a remap, I assume you would have to provide some paperwork from the garage to certify the power increase?

Rich.

Also try Greenlight insurance. They're very mod friendly, but are fussy about the age and history of drivers.

Could be worth a call.

www.greenlightinsurance.com/

Unlike most insurers, you get to speak to someone who is not only in the UK, but understands what the mods are and the effect they truly have.

I've found them to be excellent so far, although no claims made yet, fingers crossed! :)

A lot of smart owners turned to www.msminsurance.co.uk/index.asp after they had carried out mods. Never used them myself as Liverpool Victoria covered our smart ECU mod for no extra charge, a policy I understand they have now changed.

My dad chipped his Rover 75 CDT. Norwich Union were completely happy with it, and even insure me in it for the odd time I need to driver his car.

Thanks for the advice so far.

I may look into some of these co's. I usually use Confiused.com to search for quotes, but obviously with a mod. it is prob ipossible to use this to get accurate info.

Perhaps try ringing up the top cheapest quotes.

I can also recommened Brentacre. First class service, and really keenly prices. They got me a policy with Ensign for far less than adrian flux or greenlight could. My cars not chipped but has a couple of modifications which make it more or less unisurable with the 'big boys'
