  • The Speed Camera Thread - Volume 21 2 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Time he learnt by visual reference as to what speed he is travelling at like the majority of the rest of us. His last encounter which will lead to his disqulaification was 81 in a 60 limit on two wheels. Didn't know he was speeding?. The speedo on the bike would be right under his nose. Doesn't look as if he has friends or family to help him to get to Court.
  • Scrapping old cars (Polo anyone?) 26 May 2004 (Forum)
Haynes manual. Just south of Tower Bridge? Recent cambelt; brand new points & plugs & rotor; recent leads, well maintained recently. Recorded 83k miles, but more probably at least 183k or maybe 283k. Starts 1st or 2nd time. The real point of this post is that finding somebody to take it was remarkably difficult.
  • Leon TDI - Brief grinding noise 4 May 2004 (Forum)
They assured me the bearings were ok and it was likely a stone caught between the brake disc and the plate behind it. The sound occurs without braking which has lead me to rule out pad wear - the pad wear indicator has never illuminated and looking through the alloys they seem fine. I find it irksome that this noise is present and I cant irridacate or explain it.
  • Fiesta 1.25 zetec - fuel system problems 20 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Speed dies/limits when accelerating through 4500rpm then drops to 65-70mph and it's fine again (been doing this for few months while accelerating through exactly 4500, so high it's never been a major prob, suspected filter). Just renewed badly worn Plugs for NGK's, Bosch Leads, Fuel & air filters. Absolutly no different! Is this a dodgy air mass sensor. Very consistant fault never cuts out and is drivable if I take it easy pulling away with enough rev! (1500) Any ideas whats holding me up ??
  • Mondeo Pinking 4 Aug 2003 (Forum)
When the weather is warm I get quite severe pinking from 3000rpm upwards with high load ( uphill or accelerating ), this pinking seems to coincide with the opening of the secondary throttles. I maintain the car myself and it has new spark plugs, HT leads, air filter and fuel filter. Ive tried running higher octane fuel ( Shell Optimax ) and the pinking is still there. Ive checked the Intake Air Temp sensor and it gives a reading of approx 25kOhms at 20degC which seems to be OK.
  • Volvo 760 Behaving Badly 18 Jun 2003 (Forum)
The car is the in-laws who live a 3 hour drive away and unfortunately this was as usual sprung on me on a visit last weekend under the excuse "We don't like troubling you" - suppose I should be gtrateful really, but some warning would be nice. The jobs done over the weekend include; Replace distributor cap, rotor, leads, plugs, idle control valve, clean throttle body. Good increase in performance but no help in curing fault(s). Personally I think it is the MAF unit but do not want to go to the expense as the car is up for renewal next year.
  • Astra 1.4i Merit 1992 - Burbling 4 Jun 2003 (Forum)
The car generally runs fine for its age and mileage its at 116800 miles now and I have recently serviced it. New Rotor Arm, Dizzy Cap, HT Leads, Spark Plugs, Oil and Air filter Change, Cleaned out all breather type hoses. New Thermostat, water pump and cambelt. However it is burbling at idle. The tickover speed seems OK and if a normal engine note was: Dt-Dt-Dt-Dt-DT..............etc Mine sounds like: Dt-Dt-Phut-Dt Dt-Phut-Dt-Dt-Dt-Dt-Phut (this is impossible aint it) Coincident with this burbling- the exhaust pipe shakes.
  • Starting Problems on Golf 3 16v 31 May 2003 (Forum)
I've sent it to 2 garges where they did diagnostics but found nothing - one replaced the vacuum hose to no avail, the other couldn't think of anything so cleaned the injectors which did help for a bit. They said they found no fault codes on the ECU. I've changed the HT lead and put a new rotor arm on from the advice of one garage but no difference. The other thing I noticed was that the oil temperature registers at 20C colder than the water temperature dial. Surely this doesn't make sense??!
  • Vectra Engine Management 10 Apr 2003 (Forum)
It can be restarted after cranking for about eight seconds, after which the engine coughs and splutters, then runs reasonably but with the engine management light on. The HJ archive leads me to suspect either the camshaft sensor or crankshaft sensor, though it has been suggested to me that the difficulty in restarting points to the crankshaft sensor as the most probable cause. Before I start buying sensors on a trial and error basis, would anyone have an opinion?
  • Golf 110tdi turbo problems 20 Mar 2003 (Forum)
This dealer phoned me the same day to ask if any work had been done on my car since I bought it. None has been done. He said that one of the pipes leading to the turbo had been bent and another disconnected resulting in a pretty major problem. A new turbo is going to be fitted under warranty. My question is, should this, along with the other faults, have been picked up on in the pre delivery checks in the first instance?
  • VW Passat Lurching!!!!! 23 Feb 2003 (Forum)
My car is running absolutely fine on idle, round town BUT after a few miles on the motorway develops what I can only describe as a lurch, a bit like when you are about to run out of fuel. Cut an even longer story short....have done full service, ignition system all fine, plugs and leads, filters all done. Then I discover the Airflow Meter. The way this thing operates makes a lot of sense in the problem I have, air being cut off or too much but only when the throttle is constantly open and after a while?
  • Dandy Highwaymen? 28 Nov 2002 (Forum)
I took my car to a German auto specialist and they seem to have diagnosed the problem thus: Dodgy dizzy cap, HT leads and rotor arm. Replace rocker cover gasket. Replace choke unit. Clean out inlet manifold. Sounds fair enough - the inlet manifold is preventing sufficient coolant circulating round the carb. What wasn't fair enough was the price!
  • Focus recall in US 5 Nov 2002 (Forum)
One involves a bolt in the front suspension assembly that can become loose and cause noise and vibration or, in a small number of cases, lead to separation of the ball joint, Ford said in a statement on Monday. It said the other concern involved Focus vehicles with Zetec engines in which potential problems with the placement of a battery cable could result in smoke, wire melting or under-hood fires.
  • Costly parts/repairs ?? 21 Sep 2002 (Forum)
For example, I've read a lot about the Omega here and it seems they suffer from certain common problems which are very costly to put right (e.g. faulty digital displays & climate control; complex dashboard removal/refitting; expensive leads which need to be changed regularly @ £150 plus!) and it is this information that has made me think again. I don't see this ever being a comprehensive list, just a guide to the most common, expensive repairs for each type of car.
  • Ford Ka Misfire 6 Sep 2002 (Forum)
Anyway, the plugs look fine this time, but the misfire is back - any ideas? I am reluctant to shell out for a set of HT leads (does anyone know how much they are?) especially since the problem seems to be temperature related. There are no warning lights, the coolant level/colour is fine and the rad fan is also fine. On the subject of taper fit plugs: I have always been told to install any set of plugs with a smear of copper grease on the threads, after gapping the electrode of course...
  • Servicing BMW 318i 30 Aug 2002 (Forum)
I've always used Castrol Magnatec on the old Merc, will this be ok or should I go for fully synthetic? 3. I also intend to change plugs and air filter, but should I also replace HT leads/dist cap/rotor arm as preventative maintenance? 4. I have phoned the BMW dealership which has serviced it during the last 2 years and they very helpfully went through their computer records. Coolant has been changed in the last 12 months, but no mention of brake fluid.
  • Bin Lumbered - Persistant Polo Probs 13 Dec 2001 (Forum)
The carb has been reconditioned and seems ok. new carb gasket, fuel filter changed, plugs changed, leads checked, idle up, idle down, advanced, retarded. I am almost at a total loss and have used up too many favours with my local friendly mechanic. I checked the oil cap tonight atfer more complaints and found evidence of mayonaisse.

  • The Nanny State 19 Sep 2001 (Forum)
He goes on to produce similar figures for the USA, and puts forward the theory that safer operating conditions for the driver of a vehicle in creases the risks the driver is prepared to take, and therefore leads to an increase in casualty figures overall. Compulsory crash helmets is a tired old subject among bikers, and there is probably no chance of the law ever being repealed without a major sea-change of opinion, but it raises an interesting question of what public opinion would actually be if the true picture on the results of this legislation and seat belt laws were to emerge.
  • Polo Problem 19 Jul 2001 (Forum)
: I thought it was a fuel pressure problem and bought a 2nd hand fuel injector of a low mileage car which did help bit but hasn't cured it. I've also replaced the temperature sensor, spark plugs and HT leads. I've also checked and cleaned all of the electrical connections and they seemed fine. One garage mentioned it could be the distributor as this adjusts the timing when the engine is cold. Thing is I don't want to put it in the garage and waste money replacing something that doesn't need replacing.
