  • The joys of new car ownership.... 3 Jul 2005 (Forum)
My main point of interest is how they manage to arrive at a figure of £75 (excl. VAT) for diesel oil. On the upside, cleaned inside 'n out with a tin of Volvo mint imperials sitting on the passenger seat for the kids to scoff over the weekend.
  • Getting an MOT certificate 25 Mar 2005 (Forum)
My (nearly) new 10 year old Volvo has just sailed through the first MOT I have had done on it. The last time I had to spend more than about £10-£20 to get a car through the test must have been in about 1989! Am I just lucky? Or just a careful owner?
  • load carrier for building work 13 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I am looking for something cheap and reliable which I can use and abuse for loadcarrying (rubble, plasterboard etc) for the duration of the works. I've seen a volvo 760 estate on 88E with 140k for £200, but not had a chance to check it out yet. Would this type of vehicle make sense (i would keep my main car and only use this at weekends and evenings) does anyone have any suggestions?
  • Are we all wimps and weaklings? 11 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Why the obsession we have now that every car short of a track day special has to have power steering? I remember my parent's first Volvo, a 1972 144S, built like a tank, weighing like a tank, and with completely non assisted steering. Mum ain't exactly a Russian shot putter, and she could park it with aplomb on a six pence. Parallel parking in to a narrow gap?
  • Loading an Estate 28 Apr 2003 (Forum)
What's the recommended approach for loading an estate (Volvo V70) when you want to have the following configuration: driver and two passengers - one in the front and one in the back Is it to keep the luggage below head height - even if that means it spills into the passenger compartment (via split fold rear seats) or is it pile it high in the rear and use the nylon cargo net to stop luggage breaking through under heavy braking?
  • Useful Reversing Sensor Info 24 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Having decided not to pay the sum requested by Volvo for a OEM reversing sensor system on my new V70, I will fit an after market system instead. HJ's FAQ page told me that the Quanan 2030 came top in the Auto Express test, so I searched the web for more information.
  • Best six or seven seater? 9 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I loathe people carriers, won't buy a Discovery as I want reliablity, and sadly a look today at the much acclaimed Nissan XTrail indicates it's only a five seater. So, an initial cast around narrows it down to a Volvo V70 or slightly elderly Merc estate. Any other ideas on this one to help? Looking to spend an absolute maximum of 20K, hopefully less as it'll ease the pain of the first round of internal and external damage by the kids.

  • Freezing Washer Nozzles 20 Dec 2001 (Forum)
Is it just the cars I've had - Peugoet/Citroen/Ford/Volvo - or do other cars have washer nozzles that freeze up. It sure isn't rocket science to use some of all that spare heat under the bonnet to keep things warm. It's dangerous to have a dirty windscreen on the motorway that you can't wash because things are frozen up.
  • V40 side marker lights 19 Dec 2001 (Forum)
Can anyone help? My Volvo V40 has orange side marker lights at the front and rear. (Supposed to aid visibility to other cars in a side on view). One of these has a failed bulb and I want to change it. The manual gives detailed instructions for a number of other bulbs but says to refer to dealer for all other bulbs (including these).
  • BMW 1 Series - Buying a car 5K Range - 116i/MX5 NC/C30 21 Nov 2023 (Forum)
I’m looking for something that i can be dailied but is also a lot of fun, i don’t need something silly fast but with a small kick and some excitement. Was looking at volvo c30 or 2l mx5 but i know they’re rust buckets and prob not great for your only car and a daily. Prefer manual petrol but a bit of efficient fuel consumption would be nice. I’ve listed this below as it’s my current catch and think it’s a good deal for mileage love the idea of rwd - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202310263349508
  • How long to estabilsh a reputation for reliability 25 Jan 2014 (Forum)
Under normal circumstances, I'd be changing my car in 18 months time - but most of the possible replacements haven't been launched yet or only just launched - mainly as a result of Ford's sell-off of JLR and Volvo. Now I don't intend to be first in the queue for a new platform with an all-new engine and I'm concerned that things won't be clear until the first vehicles are well out of warranty so that's 4 years after launch.
  • Any - M25 Rant 12 Nov 2011 (Forum)
Having indicated for a good 15 sec I decided there was space for me to move into the inner lane and did so.  The guy behind me (in a Volvo) went mad, flashing and horning, and continued on up the M25 still doing so. Have there been some more mental hospital closures in the area recently ? I am at a complete loss to see how guys like this tick ???
  • Mixed tyre load rating on same axle - legal? 27 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Following a recent bad luck spate of punctures (three in two weeks!), I've managed to end up with tyres having different load ratings at the back of my Volvo S80. One is a Pirelli P6000 215/55 R 16 93W (the 'standard' load rating for this vehicle), whilst the other is a Dunlop SP Sport 01 215/55 R 16 97W - an 'extra load' variant, usually specified for MPV-type applications.
  • Small Car Recommendation for 19yr old, £1500-2000? 21 Sep 2007 (Forum)
My 19 year old daughter's car (a 1999 Corsa 1.0), free-gifted by a kind neighbour a year ago, is dying (it has needed head gasket, exhaust, cat, clutch etc doing in last 6 months and clearly won't last too much longer based on the oil its losing). She regrets not taking us up on the offer of old 1994 Volvo 440 "tip trip" car and needs to replace the Corsa with something cheap to insure and ideally more reliable than the Corsa has been. Any suggestions for £2000 max? thanks
  • Modern cars that rust 5 May 2007 (Forum)
Yes, I know Mercedes' decline in build has been well documented but this was still surprising. Car was otherwise a straight, genuine looking example ie not accident repaired. 02 02 Volvo V40 with rusty rear arches exactly the same as used to afflict the old 400 series from the ex DAF factory in the Netherlands. Anybody else got any starters for 10?
  • Are we patriotic about cars? 17 Mar 2007 (Forum)
If you go to any European countries, you'll mostly see local brand cars! Example: France - Citroen, Peugeot, Renault Germany - Mercedes, Audi, VW etc. Sweden - Volvo, Saab (Merc & Audi pretty well too) Spain - Seat (and Skoda too) Czech Rep - Skoda Netherlands - mostly European cars even USA - Ford, GM etc. (though many people buying Jap/Euro brands now) But see in Britain...
  • Experience of Saab 9-3 Sportswagon? 12 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Just looking for feedback re: space, comfort, economy, reliability, service bills,... etc. I'd be buying brand new (now that Volvo have returned my deposit with the confession that they still have no idea if/when the C70 I'd ordered in March will be built....!) Thanks, N.
  • Renault Grand Espace 3.5 Petrol 13 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Hi Backroomers, I quite fancy swapping the Volvo for a Grand Espace. I've read mixed views on reliability. Does andone have a 'New' style {2002 to date} Espace? If so any good? I've also read that the engine is shared with the Nissan 350Z. So is it a Renault or a Nissan unit?
