Average miles per annum car - Why so much attention paid to fuel consumption? 7 Oct 2018 (Forum)
., depreciation is still 12.5p per mile - twice that for 4000m p.a. drivers. So clearly, for most people the rate of depreciation per annum is far more important than studiously comparing fuel economy figures to the nearest decimal point. As for EVs with 'free' energy, there are a couple of two year old Tesla S cars (much the same size as a Ford Mondeo) for sale at around £47,000 having done (slightly above average) 20,000 miles. -
Recommendations - used mini MPV, wheelchair etc. 14 Mar 2018 (Forum)
Some storage, whether under the boot floor or otherwise would be good I also really want a heated front windscreen in this next car, as I'm fed up of waiting 5-10 minutes for the inside to defrost! Air con would be great, though not as important. Lastly, I'd like something that is reasonably low emission - with the low tax band to match! - and economical to run. I realise that I've asked a lot, but a car that gets most of them right would be great. -
Jeep Grand Cherokee, VW Touareg - another "which car" thread... sorry 1 Mar 2017 (Forum)
hence why i am looking for another suv, something with a bit more luxury, more poke and - very important - more boot space for my fishing gear. so the 2 i have narrowed it down to, within the budget of €10,000 plus my honda, are 2005/6 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 CRD or similar year VW Touareg V6 3.0 tdi, both with under 100k miles (150,000km) one thing that concerns me of sorts, is the reliability. i do not want to buy a money pit because of a badge (had considered and subsiquently ruled out LRD3) i ruled out the VW 2.5 tdi R5 as aside from higher tax, the costs and economy are the same for a weaker engine, same goes for the Jeep's 2.7 CRD. if they are more reliable then obviously they are the smarter choice -
Cheap running costs for 10k/year commute 3 Dec 2016 (Forum)
Interested in low overall cost of travel more than refinement, size, image of vehicle etc, but want minimal hassle; happy to buy used rather than new, but am too old and too far away from dealerships for the hassle of faults. Don't need aircon. Acceleration, style/image, size, etc are not important. I don't care if the autobox is unrefined but I care very much if it wastes fuel. Insurance costs are low as I'm ancient and live somewhere quiet; it's all about the depreciation and fuel. -
How low can you go? 26 Sep 2016 (Forum)
Admittedly it's a 3rd car so we're not overly reliant on it but I do use them to commute to work, trips to the dump and for vitally important trips down the pub where I'd rather abandon a heap than one of our more valuable motors for the night. I maintain them and regularly check them to ensure safety but accept minor faults as part of the fun and accept that any major faults will lead to the scrappy. -
n/a - Changes to insurance law 23 Jul 2016 (Forum)
Some quotations from the report: 'A collateral lie is one which is untrue, but does not affect the overall validity of the claim. The judges voted by four to one to change one of the important principles behind current insurance law. One of the judges, Lord Mance, said: "The critical point is that, in the case of a collateral lie….the insured is trying to obtain no more than the law regards as his entitlement, and the lie is irrelevant to the existence of that entitlement. -
Ford Focus - Should a 61 plate have MOT history? 1 Mar 2016 (Forum)
The vehicle should have had it's second MOT at 31 Jan 2016, correct? 3. Why would it not have online MOT details? 4. Is this an import? 5. Why would the DVLA say the Tax was due 01 October 2014? Was it SORNd or in for (long repairs)? 6. If the vehicle was SORNd, or was in for repairs for the last 1 or 2 years did it thus not require an MOT? -
Dacia Citroen - If you don't feel petrol is strong enough...... 20 Jan 2015 (Forum)
Not bothered about speed really as I've gotten that out of my system already. New as I would like a guarentee and to know it hasn't been messed about with or imported dodgily (both very possible in the 2nd hand car market here). Never bought new before so it's obviously a huge undertaking and thinking aloud to make sure the best choice is made. Over here nothing comes close to the overall Dacia package and cars hold value better here as well, I'm just concerned that the engines can cope with the abuse that's going to get thrown at them.......... -
Mercedes Sprinter - New vehicle not so new, legal advice please. 5 Jan 2015 (Forum)
I've just bought a new top-end motorhome from a well established dealer who imports newish LHD campervans from Germany. They come from a very reputable German dealer which is one of the largest sellers of the brand in the country. I suspect that they may be hire models, which are moved on at the end of the season. -
Volkswagen Golf VI - Air Conditioning Compressor Bolt Sheared 70k Miles 17 Nov 2013 (Forum)
I then got a call back saying that the dealer and VW would contribute to the cost of the repair (important customer, etc) and that it would now cost me around £200 to resolve the issue. I'm perfectly reasonable and obviously put my trust in them that this is a genuine issue that only a replacement of the unit can rectify but I am wavering between its just bad luck and its a kind offer to this sort of thing shouldn't really happen in 70,000 miles of mainly motorway driving. -
Buying my Second(ish) Car - Medium Hatchback 10 Nov 2013 (Forum)
I have also just started a new, far more serious job than I had before, which will potentially involve a lot of driving, so comfort while driving is hugely important, and image is part of the consideration here, so an old Fiesta won't do the job anymore. So, I have some to the conclusion that something in the medium hatchback sector would be appropriate for my needs, but can't pinpoint which car. -
Tyres Optimised for Ride Quality 12 May 2013 (Forum)
This wonderful ride compliance comes with a cost, though, and that is the handling, which is perfectly safe and progressive, but not exactly razor-sharp. I don't mind that at all, because the tyres' other virtues are more important to me, but anyone wishing Nurburgring handling finesse should steer clear of the EcoContact 5 tyres. Grip from these tyres is excellent, though. So, in summary, anyone looking to rid their car of a bone-jarring ride, and who does not care for boy-racer handling, should look very closely at the Continental Eco-Contact 5 tyres. -
Non-motoring stuff 9 Feb 2013 (Forum)
'I don't see any criminal offence being committed in the above posts.' said Avant, Commanding Officer of Peasant Control who went on to say 'It's very important that we buy a Skoda from their convenient dealership network complete with reasonable warranty.' It's not the first time the motoring website has found itself at the centre of a storm. In 2011 the forum experienced what become known as the 'Great Purge' after a debate around multi-point injection resulted in unthrottled literally ejaculating boredom and the effects lasted many months. -
Vauxhall Astra H Estate, - Which car?(6 mth baby)safe,automatic,low insurance 17 Aug 2010 (Forum)
No preference for any specific car. Main consideration in selection are: a) Safety (most important - euro ncap 5) b) Low insurance (4-6 group / 1.4-1.6 engine) since I have held a license for only a few months c) Automatic (mainly for city driving) d) Approx 3 yr old / 30K / from a network dealer for 5K but can go up to 7K Based on these we short-listed Ford-Fusion but then realized that boot space was too small to hold pram. -
Suzuki GT380 - NPR cameras (on the Cat & Fiddle road) 16 Jul 2010 (Forum)
The helpful officer tried to assert the lettering was 2mm too narrow, until I suggested that that holding the ruler steady while measuring would be a useful idea. Apparently it's very important that we all have number-plate lettering the correct size, so that the NPR cameras can work properly. I assured them I was glad to be able to keep Cheshire Road Policing's numberplate measuring teams in gainful employment, especially on a sunny Sunday when I'm sure even the most hardened criminals want to take time off, kick back and have a beer and a barbecue. -
New car advice - HG gone on my Corsa 20 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I have bought some block seal to hopefully bodge the HG and get it through the MOT but before I go down the scrappage scheme is there any other deals I should consider? I only do city driving so engine size is not important, I just want something hassle free and simple. What ever car I buy I would keep it for a long time. All this depends on my ability to get a cheap loan there is no point on paying higher APR. I did make a similar thread a few months ago with regard to my dad but the difference is my parents have poor history and my dads not driving anyway now. -
Volkswagen Touran MPV (2003 - ) - Warning of impending car breakdown 8 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Luckily, my wife and 3 children were near our house when it happened but they could have been in the middle of nowhere. Obviously, my wife should have understood the importance of a red battery warning light but I am sure she is like many millions of other motorists in not understanding what happens under the bonnet of her car and would benefit from similar guidance in words of one syllable. -
Campervan - Help please 31 Oct 2009 (Forum)
We are novices and would welcome any advice. What we think we know: ? 2.3litre or bigger diesel engine (fuel economy is important to us) ? Needs to be 16-21ft (want to access some more remote places) ? Probably 2001 or newer (We are told that breakdown cover is difficult/expensive to come by for vehicles over 10 years old) ? -
Why are so many BMW X5 drivers arrogant? 3 Sep 2009 (Forum)
As the lights changed, the BMW moved off sharply and, instead of turning left as was compulsory, swerved in front of the Alfa. Obviously the X5 driver had seen the queue and thought that he was far to important to wait his turn and had barged in very dangerously. The only reason that there wasn't an accident is that the Alfa backed off. No doubt the BMW driver felt that he had "won". Before the incident, I mentioned casually to SWMBO that I expected something like it to happen. -
Recommend a new car for my Mum... (please) 27 Jul 2009 (Forum)
The only passenger she will ever carry is my stepfather, so as they are both about 80 access to the front seats is much more important than access to the back seats). The things that she misses about her current car are electric windows and central locking. The boot doesn't have to be huge as it's only shopping that will be carried in it.
