  • 21st century car market thru 70s eyes... 30 Jun 2007 (Forum)
To me (and this is someone who was a nipper in the 70s but car mad) the big things I noticed were: 1) Big change in the cars driven by the middle classes - the large peugeot 504 estates /volvos 240s/260s which were the staple of every public school car park then seem to have almost all been supplanted by German makes...large sensible French cars seem to have died out...same with the Granada/Opel Ricord types.
  • 'clocking' dilemma, how to sell 26 May 2007 (Forum)
Which then meant i knew the car was clocked. I'd only ever intended on keeping it as a temp measure as a man in his 20's didn't really want a Volvo 240.....but how to get rid? I didn't want to lie to anyone or do anything dodgy, but neither did i want to lose too much on the car either. So in the end i let a relative sell it for me privately, made no comment about the mileage, instructed them to state that their relative was selling it and they did not know much about the history (which was true) and leave it at that.
  • Can I get a Bargain Rover 75 estate 9 Jun 2005 (Forum)
OK - been mostly looking for a Volvo V70, 2 children, 1 dog, typical family. Anyway - been going to auctions and well, Volvo V70, fits the bill nicely. But a mate of mine, mechanic just mentioned to me ref a relative can get the Rover 75 dirt cheap as also in the trade and they got to dispose of them from all the old franchises that have all gone belly up -basically, flog them for what they can get.
  • I need help choosing a car 23 Oct 2004 (Forum)
My budget is anything upto about 6k. Up until now I've never spent more than 1k on a car, currently riding around on a just-working Volvo 440 that we got of a mate's mum for 1100 4 years ago. It's been fine, but now we have two kids (3 and 1y) and I want something different. Trouble is, I'm not sure what it is I need. More space would be nice, but we live in London so it's only justfied for the odd long trip, maybe once a month.
  • The cheek of it! 6 May 2003 (Forum)
The section that won't is the fuel flap, in which the scratch is indeed a scrape, horizontally along the middle. Hopefully Volvo can sell a prepainted fuel flap, but if not, repair (fill and feather spray out to the shut line) should be easy and 'invisible'. The reason I parked the car where I did was because when I left the previous car on the other side of the house, it got scraped by either a skateboard or bush bike, as well as assaulted by grit laden footballs!

  • What cars make the best taxi? 23 Sep 2011 (Forum)
What cars do you often see as taxi's in your area? Theres alot of old 406 HDi's round here, some new Mondeo's and estate variants. The odd Volvo. What surprises me is how the Prius which i reviewed a few weeks ago isnt more commonly used as one, specifically in cities. Large car, excellent round town economy, low tax, tyres cheaper to replace than alot of other cars, no clutches to replace and they dont break down.
  • How Reliable Is Your Car? 14 Sep 2011 (Forum)
What is surprising is that Citroen, Fiat and Peugeot, not firms renowned for reliability all ranked above BMW, VW, Volvo and Audi with Mercedes Benz languishing in 27th place. Thoughts?
  • Voilvo V70 - Shunted from the rear 18 Aug 2011 (Forum)
The Fiesta stayed in one piece but was a bit of a mess with the front end stoven in and fluids leaking all over and the tail of it smashed up too.. Our Volvo estate's tailgate is cracked and the bumper dislodged but its all cosmetic. The off side rear seat will not fold forward now so I suspect the chassis may have moved. The insurance lot have been really quick getting the car in so thats good.

MPG not important, easy spares, and easy spanner work are. MK1 VW Golf? Old Merc SEL? Rover 800? even some nice Volvo 9 series factory stretch Limos out there for not a lot. Am I crazy? Looking for interesting ideas, which are fun and practicable. (old MX5mmmmm)
  • Car Spotting 2 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I had a bit of spare time last week, so went cruising the streets of New Orleans. (Google street view). Noticed quite a few old Volvo's, and a sad looking VW Beetle outside 1180 7th street. A new Mini outside of 1052 Dauphine street, and an old Mini outside of 4030 Royal street. A tidy looking SWB Landrover at 634 Louisa street and a rather untidy looking campervan at 854 4th street I suppose spares must be available for the old european stuff, or do they 'make do and mend'

  • Mazda MX5 (2005 - ) - Buying a used Mazda MX5 22 Feb 2008 (Forum)
I have owned 7 cars of this general type to date, MGTC (2 examples) TD, GT, tf and Sunbeam Alpine, Volvo P1800. I would now like an MX5. There don't seem to be many recent model, low mileage examples around so I guess I will have to be prepared for a high price. Can anyone with a post-2005 example kindly comment on what to look for please?
  • Volkswagen Golf V estate (2007 - ) - Any reason to NOT buy? 4 Feb 2008 (Forum)
The only other alternative so far is a BMW 320i Touring. The following have been test driven and EXCLUDED: Passat (too large), Touran (too wide), Volvo V50 (just didn't feel right). Car must have automatic, park sensors, folding door mirrors, at least 2 litre engine. I suggested Skoda Octavia Estate which they have yet to investigate. I welcome comments.

  • Structural stainless steel in cars 13 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I have just found this article which discusses research into using high strength stainless steel in car chassis, which could give weight saving and safety benefits: http://www.outokumpu.com/pages/Page____37404.aspx "...Under the umbrella of the Next Generation Vehicle project, NGV for short... ...Using the B-pillar (a key structural member of a car body) from Volvo S40 as a benchmark, they came up with two different designs, some 20 percent lighter than the conventional pillar. When crash-tested, the behavior of stainless steel was discovered to be very good, albeit different from ordinary steel..."
  • Mr. Flatcap's helpful comments. 22 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Mr.Flatcap used to flash his lights at oncoming Volvos to remind their drivers they'd left their lights on. Here are some of his more recent public-spirited comments made in car parks: "Excuse me, but I don't think you're bonnet's shut properly." (To owner of latest Vauxhall Astra) "Nasty misfire you've got there, plug lead must have come loose."
  • Are ECU logged faults 'timestamped'? 16 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Obviously time/date would require a battery-backed system, so maybe that's out - but recording mileage (electronic odometer) would be pretty easy. The car is a 2000MY Volvo S80. Cheers.
  • Verifying milage? 3 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I saw a 1996 Volvo T5 last week which looked fairly tidy and had 89,000 miles on it. The car salesman said that there was no service history with the car but the milage seemed genuine. He then said that the HPI check would have said if the mileage wasn't genuine.
