Fuel confusion 29 May 2003 (Forum)
Just got myself a VW Passat 1995 1.8 petrol. The manual says it should use 95 RON Premium unleaded. This confuses me as I think 95 RON petrol is standard... -
Mud Flaps and MPG 1 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Hi I was wondering if anyone has ever experimented to quantify the effect of mud flaps on fuel consumption. One would assume they incur added wind resistance and thereby reduce fuel economy? Granted this may depend on the design of the mud flap but is the effect theoretical/negligible or 'real'? -
Shell Optimax 31 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Lets hope this isnt the same, I personally will wait to see how it goes. >> I have just filled up with this fuel. My car specs 98 ron preferred, with 95 minimum. I hope that it improves the performance and economy. I asked the attendant and he said that the fuel is the same as the old stuff, but improved. -
VW Passat 1.9 Tdi 2004 AVF engine - VW Passat will not start 29 May 2014 (Forum)
Hello My car is a VW Passat 4motion 2004 with an AVF engine (3B6) I recently changed the fuel filter on the vehicle but did not prime the fuel filter (believing that the pump will automatically fill the unit similar to petrol engine- learned my lesson.) The car started and I drove it 30 meters down the road where the engine stopped presumably as the filter was empty. -
Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - 94 1.4 non starter 10 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Thought that I just might have a slight inlet manifold leak and retorqued the nuts. The awkward lower ones were a little loose. Tried starting and no joy. Checked fuel and there was no pressure at the Schraeder valve. Tried again. Pump worked for a second. Enough for the engine to catch but only splutter and then it cut. From then on no fuel pump at all. Checked the fuel pump relay off car. -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2003 2.0 Flashing glowplug light & engine turning 8 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Turbo seal leak needs repaired 3. Failed injector or loosing it's calibration and needs re-coded 4. Pressure sensor on fuel pump 5. Fuel filter and fuel gauge sender unit 6. EGR valve needs replacing 7. Fuel pipes being a bit knackered having holes in it and drew air into it 8. Fuel pump disintegrating or being blocked which in turn could be affecting the injectors Apparently there have been a number of Ford service bulletins about TDCI Mondeos cutting out. -
Poor fuel quality Kent SE England? Vol 1 1 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I can only assume that something within the fuel is coating the sensor and stopping it performing as intended. I do know that fuel samples are being tested, and will post results when known......but until then....be careful, it may cost you £250. -
" fuel Saver Tyres" (Proof?) 17 Nov 2006 (Forum)
I`m a little cynical about claims in general..( maybe by being exposed to too many engine oil/additives/petrol, magic particle/bonding to metal and mileage claims in early life :) Anyway, It turns out the van has *Firestone Fuel Savers* fitted. I wondered if most new vehicles have similar tyres fitted these days and if so where is the hard, scientifically measurable evidence for fuel saving? IMHO it must be easier than trying to measure something such as fuel consumption under road conditions. -
Mk1 Leon temp gauge & fuel gauge 31 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Both the fuel gauge and temperature gauge have been intermittently faulty for a while now - I had the dealer run a diagnostic check and the fuel gauge sender needs to be replaced (fault code 00771 030 - open circuit or short to positive), as does the coolant temperature sender (code 01039 030 - open circuit or short to positive). -
Any - Real Fuel Saving at Low Cost 4 Sep 2020 (Forum)
For example, improving fuel economy from 51 mpg to 59 mpg in June/July 2019 on a 94 mile round trip, with the car driven gently (no aggressive acceleration or braking) but cruising at around 65 mph on dual carriageways. That is a 16% improvement in fuel economy. -

Hi, Just had my fuel injector changed, car is on 85k miles. I've noticed the car vibrates when idle now at traffic, or when im at traffic and foot is on brake. I've done about 20 miles since had this from the mechanics, should I drive it a lot more to let the ECU learn or something and will this ease the vibrating at idle?SKODA OCTAVIA II Estate 2.0 TDI 16V 100kw 136CH - Fuel filter problems with my 2007 Skoda Octavia 21 Jan 2022 (Forum)
ILooking to buy a new Fuel Filter but when I find a maker whose price seems reasonable (eg. RIDEX) they offer three different filters which they say are all suitable for my Skoda. But the internal diameters of the filters, as listed below are totally different.Renault Clio III 1.5 DCi - Clio 3 1.5dci fuel safety cut off 30 Nov 2019 (Forum)
All i can think is that kicked the front bumper pretty hard in frustration, could this have tripped some kind of safety fuel cut? Any help greatly appreciated TIAAny - Tyres 5 Apr 2017 (Forum)
The cheapest tyre was £60.83 and was branded BlackCircles with 4.9/5 rating and C ratings for fuel economy and wet grip. Next cheapest was also BlackCircles for £64 odd but worse ratings E for fuel and C for wet grip. Looking down the options most of the mid-range options are worse rated than C/C and even the premium ones are only B for wet grip and usually the same or worse for fuel economy.Nissan X-Trail - 2002 xtrail diesel spluttering 22 Feb 2017 (Forum)
swmbo's 2002 xtrail diesel with 60k Nissan FSH, has intermittent fault of losing power, cutting out and jerky engine. AA said fuel pump. Brought to specialist who managed to experience issue, but it went away after they changed fuel filter and an earth lead. Problem back again after 2 months. Mobile tech suggested turbo and a garage to recover to and do repair.Vauxhall Corsa B '93 - Help Please! Hot Start - Fuel not electrics? 7 Jun 2015 (Forum)
I've changed the ECU temperature sender, the coil, the ignition amplfier and the distributer (with the hall effect dectector within). There seems to be spark at the plugs.. So are there any fuel system or any other components that could do this?Vauxhall zafira 1.6 Active - Strong smell of fuel 2 Aug 2014 (Forum)
There are no obvious leaks as the driveway is always clean & dry. Smell is there regardless of how much fuel is in the tank. Sometimes you are only just aware of a slight smell, other days it is extremely strong. I am hoping to get the car into a garage at the start of the week - any ideas what could be wrong with it?Chevrolet Cruze - Happy about fuel consumption and tyres 14 Jun 2014 (Forum)
Just checked up on fuel usage, (brim to brim) 40 and a bit t0 the gallon, not complaining about that at all, was round trip taunton to rickmansworth via a303/m3/m25 back via a412/datchet/windsor m3/a303 daytime both ways. All things considered quite pleased with that, and those rotalla tyres i fitted 7 months ago doing well, no signs of wear and much quieter than the nexen n-blue fitted previously.
