  • Back end shunt in borrowed car.. who pays? 26 Jan 2009 (Forum)
My father-in-law borrowed my brother-in-law's car when his own broke down. F-I-L has fully comp insurance and was definitely covered to drive the car (3rd party only) under his own insurance, and B-I-L had his own insurance (TPF&T) anyway. Father-in-law was hit in rear at traffic island whilst stationary.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 2000 2.0 HDi - Coolant loss 13 Aug 2008 (Forum)
SWMBO's X -reg estate (sixty-odd thousand miles) has recently started to need its coolant level topping up - about half a cupful every fortnight, low mileage covered in that time. An inspection under the bonnet and under the car reveals nothing. (Mind you, the car stands on gravel.) All the hoses I can see and/or touch seem dry, with no trace of residue. No trace of oil contamination.
  • what happens to your car if you're nicked? 24 Jan 2008 (Forum)
    3) do the police have unlimited insurance cover ie what if you were driving a Veyron and not a £200 banger? 4) what if you pass the breathtest at the station and it transpires the roadside tester was defective (you had had no alcohol at all) - are they obliged to take you back to your car or if it was lifted waive storage charges?
  • Peugeot 106 (1991 - 2002) - cam belt 4 Nov 2007 (Forum)
There is nothing to bed in,rubber does not need to bed in and the only other part is the tensioner. I have taken the car back but the mechanic stll insists that all is well, even after taking the cover off. But the grinding noise persists. Can you help? Chum.
  • Games you play in the car 29 Jan 2007 (Forum)
an item on the thread on minicabbing has reminded me of being a bored kid on long journeys and one particular game the old man invented to keep us kids interested it was a spotting game and you recieved points depending on the quality of 'spot' the points went like this: 1 point for... a front seat person in a car wearing a hat 1 point for ...a front seat person in a car sat on a beaded seat cover maximum points were for a 'double beader, double hatter' which i'm fairly sure was never achieved. I think my sister got a 'single hatter, double beader' once.
  • spark plug electrode 13 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I took the car to nearest Fiat agent who diagnosed a faulty spark plug.Apparently the central electrode had dropped out of it and had been rattling about inside the cylinder. After replacing this plug, the car was running as well as ever.It has since covered over 500mls.with no apparent ill effects.Does anyone know if this happy state of affairs is likley to continue,or are the long term risk of scoring etc.too great and i should flog the car before damage becomes apparent?
  • VW golf MK2 24 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Other clues are that the car seems to lack a bit of power. The car if fitted with a K&N filter and my son has drilled holes in the air cover holding the filter. On looking at top of carburettor is seems to have alot of oil sitting in it.
  • Any car/Daewoo Matiz window seals 17 Sep 2004 (Forum)
In all cars I have owned so far, the window seals acted as a "squeegy" when you wind down the window. So, if it was covered in raindrops and you wound it down and up again, the water was either removed or smeared out.
  • Civic R-Type 16 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Yesterday on his way to work the engine siezed and the Honda dealership recovered him and have given him a courtesy car. The garage rang him today to tell him the car appears to have run out of oil so it wouldn't be covered under the warranty and they will ring him tommorrow with an estimate for repairs. He has explained to them that he only picked the car up on monday and was told the car had had a thorough check.
  • Sharing my garage - insurance question 25 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Could this be more hassle than it's worth insurance wise? Is it their car insurance that would cover their cars or could there be a claim on our house insurance in the event of any loss/damage? (by the way both our vehicles are company owned/insured and we don't claim to keep them garaged) Any thoughts?
  • VW Polo - Used Car Warranty 14 May 2012 (Forum)
Hi guys, So we bought a used car from a dealer. When viewing the car he said it was covered by a 3 month warranty for engine/gearbox etc. We bought the car 2 months ago and recently the pedal box snapped, so it need a new pedal box, clutch cable etc and came to a bill of £335 to fix.
  • Yaris engine design fault - any advise? 4 May 2007 (Forum)
(Another aside - the car-by-car breakdown lists knocking from the front as a sign that the anti-roll bar bushes are failing. I've had this for over 3 years and mentioned it while the car was still in warranty. The garage claimed not to be able to find anything and told me it was OK.
  • VW Golf MK6 2.0 TDI GT Clutch Slip 28 Jun 2017 (Forum)
Not bad, but noticeable. I then pulled out of a junction a few miles down the road and I swear the car pulled away about 30% slower than normal. Its booked in with VW in 4 days for them to look at it. I've just checked the warranty and if any damage is found to be our fault, it's not covered under the warranty.
  • New BMW feature ;-) 9 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Amongst other neat touches, ********tronic can also apply light brake pressure at all times, covering the wheels in dust, something that will be a particular benefit if your fleet manager wouldn't let you specify alloy wheels and you want to disguise ugly plastic rim covers or the fact that if you weren't such an aspirational little **** you'd have gone for a rather better equipped Honda Accord.
  • Alfa Romeo Giulietta - Looking for a company car 5 Apr 2011 (Forum)
Having opted to take cash in lieu of a company car about 8 years ago I have just taken a new job and will be opting back in.  I am looking for a new car but am not up to speed with what is out there.  The car policy says it must be a 4 door and the emissions are capped at 160.
  • Mitsubishi Outlander II - Rear disc corrosion on 2 year old car 22 Mar 2010 (Forum)
this is fine except they won't replace them as a warranty issue (3 year warranty).  i bought the car a year old from the main dealer in bristol (part of the colt car company Uk) and feel that after 2 years this should really be covered as the car has not been anywhere that should have caused excessive corrosion.
  • Getting road tax when buying cars at auction 1 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Valid MOT, but I can phone a friendly garage and "book it in" so that's covered; 2. Insurance, I can get this arranged by phone; and 3. Road tax - not sure how to do this. My guess is that most (or at least some) cars will not have a tax disc, as it will have been cashed in.

  • Car Insurance Question 9 Jan 2006 (Forum)
As you may see from another thread, I am on the cusp of buying a car. In fact it is the first car either my girlfriend or myself will have insured ourselves for 2.5 years as we both have company cars (she loses hers at the end of Feb hence the purchase). As a result neither of us have official no claims (although we did have prior to getting company cars).
  • Courtesy Car 11 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Hi I usually do my own servicing, but my Father has a Jaguar that he purchased from a main dealer, and is taking in for its first service. The dealer has told him that there is an insurance charge for providing a courtesy car ! is this normal ? I thought you normally drove a courtesy car on your own third party cover and they insured the vehicle itself under their dealer policy. He rang his own insurers and they wanted the full details of the courtesy car such as year of manufacture and value etc which he had no idea of and wanted to charge about £50 !.
