  I am throwing this in for comment/discussion/criticism/ridicule (no name mentioned). It is obvious that the latest batch of non torque converter automatic transmissions in (small) cars seem to have problems. Why not replace the traditional conventional torque converter with an electric motor? Are there any obvious (or other) reasons why this wouldn't/couldn't work?

  I have just bought a 2001 1.6, 8 valve Astra hatchback with an automatic gearbox. Would someone let me know if there is a lockup clutch in the torque converter such that gearbox input shaft is locked to the crankshaft. If so, does this coincide with the change into 4th gear?
