(Mark please feel free to delete this link / thread if you feel its not suitable) tone - I can\'t say I know what to do here. It is an important message and something people need to face, but it is graphic and disturbing. I have changed the link and inserted a warning. Apart from all that, the only missing piece of the \"choosing-your-alloys/tyres\" game is one - obvious to me but never seems to appear to be important to anyone else - is the DIAMETER of the tyre!! Surely, this dimension is so critical to get right as it must affect speedo reading, transmission and car handling. Why can\'t I (just a non-techy bloke) get this sort of simple information?
  • Stainless Exhaust Systems 28 Jan 2003 (Forum)
FiF recommended using a magnet to check that the stainless steel is not of the ferritic kind if resistance to corrosion is important. This magnet test can also be applied to stainless steel exhaust systems. The cheaper ones are ferritic and WILL corrode in time, these usually being in a grade known as Hyform. It will probably be some years before they corrode to a point of failure but they can soon become subject to surface corrosion and this is irritating when it appears on the tailpipe that was so nice and shiny when you bought the system.
  • Golf 1.6 16v Performance probs... 24 Jan 2003 (Forum)
It's as if the ECU makes some kind of decision on how to setup the engine when the car is first started. The car is an import so is now out of warranty but three ECU,s, two EGR valves and several other sensors later and nothing changed. Basically the stealers didn't give a toss because the ECU has never logged any faults.
  • Rear window heater damaged on new car 6 Nov 2002 (Forum)
I bought a new Golf recently from a well known national car importer/supermarket. The other day I found that a couple of lines of the rear window heater element were not working, at the bottom of the screen. On closer inspection I saw that some of the conductive part of the heater lines has been damaged.
  • Somewhat disabled but still kicking! 24 Sep 2002 (Forum)
I would appreciate any advice or suggestions with respect to a suitable vehicle for him, as his 406 and my mother's 205 are likely to be too small and difficult to get in and out of. Important criteria are ease of access and a high seating position. Also reliability as he wont be doing any more roadside repairs. Almost certainly the new car will be an automatic and not too large for ease of parking, but with carrying capacity for possible mobility aids.
  • Harwich docks 8 Sep 2002 (Forum)
Went down to Harwich docks yesterday to pick up my imported BMW 320d. When I got to the collection pound, the place was mainly filled with Golf's Rav 4's a few Merc Sports Coupes and BMW's! As I pulled up, two transporter loads of Rav 4's and BMW's were leaving.
  • Cheeky admiral 21 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Why wasn`t this offered during the renewal just like the breakdown cover??? I am not just looking for the cheapest insurance as service is important to me, I could have gone with a cheaper deal. Oh well, will have to think long and hard next year. So be warned and if anybody is renewing their admiral policy / asking them to quote make sure you ask about this!
  • New Polo or New Corolla 2 Jul 2002 (Forum)
Perhaps you may have another suggestion - our criteria is as follows:- 5 door small hatch Safe Reliable Good residuals Approximately £11,000 Thanks Jason PS - Do you think the VW Golf 1.6 S is worth an extra £1000 at £12,190 PPS - Slightly reluctant to go for import
  • Timing belts -- another general query 25 Oct 2001 (Forum)
We read frequently the importance of changing these, the critical intervals for doing so, the dire consequences that may happen otherwise, and the vital need to check whether a prospective purchase has had this done. Most every car brand seems to be involved.
  • Another 'help me choose' thread 27 Feb 2016 (Forum)
The car sits in the driveway Monday-Friday whilst I commute to work by train, but that low mileage does include some 250 mile round trips for business and leisure.    I'll be keeping the new motor for 8-10 years, so reliability/durability is important. Resale value/depreciation pretty irrelevant, as I will mentally write it down to zero.   I'm 6'4", slim, and have developed a few minor aches and pains, so seat comfort and ergonomics are important.
  • What's the point of the Hats?! 4 Feb 2010 (Forum)
What I wanted was a Bosch system. Dealer claimed not to know whether the pump was Bosch, but said he'd check with the importers after the weekend. Fair enough - took the car for a test run, and told the dealer that I'd be back with my family to try the car after the weekend - subject to he car having a Bosch fuel pump, of course.
  • What's the worst modification you've ever seen? 1 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Job done! Of course, he *could* have carried on and upgraded, uprated or at least serviced other, less important parts of the vehicle. Examples might include items like the suspension, the brakes, the steering, and tyres. Perhaps "Dave" felt that the car was best enjoyed in its 'natural', 'raw' state. Perhaps "Dave" was an idiot?
  • AllBrandsNew - buying experience report 4 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I collected my new '57 reg Impreza from 'Allbrandsnew' in Hull this Saturday and thought that I would post how I got on. Allbrandsnew are an 'import agent' and bring cars in from other EU dealers, they also appear under the names of 'Newregcars' and 'Motor Depot'. I ordered the car back in the Spring. Although they had cars in stock at their EU dealer (Subaru in Malta) they didn't have the particular colour/spec that I wanted, so the car had to be ordered from the factory in Japan.
  • new car/ dealer-v-supermarket -v-net 15 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I had looked at this supplier, and tbh was put off by the comments I read, which pointed out a lack of care and assistance once the car has been delivered. I became adept at questioning if the car was an import, or pre-registered, and if so, when this took place. Technically speaking these cars are new, as in not having miles on the clock, but the first owner on the log book will be the garage, and it could have been some months ago.
  • Tyre noise - tread pattern...road surface....rubber hardness 15 Nov 2022 (Forum)
Are 'all seasons'  tyres quieter than 'normal' tyres?  Having them is not that important because we don't go out much in bad weather; snow and ice is now a rarity  where we live, and we've managed perfectly well without them until the last very few years.
  • Year of Registration vs VIN conflict! 18 Oct 2021 (Forum)
Yesterday I went to check out an old Lada the seller had advertised as being from 1979 and hence with the status of a historic vehicle (v. important for me as I live within the ULEZ!). I checked the registration plate on the DVLA's website and it's down as being registered for the first time 01/01/1979 and he has the logbook with the same date.
  • Honda Civic - black flap under front bumper of honda civic 9gen 26 May 2021 (Forum)
Hopefully someone can assist with the following questions?   1) Is this part important? I tried to google and some say it's for dirt protection and some say it's for aerodynamics. 2) Is it ok that I only have 1 on there on one side, rather than 2? Driving seems fine with only one attached.
  • PCP? 6 Mar 2021 (Forum)
