  • Peugeot 406 (1996 - 1998) - 98 1.9 td white and back smoke 7 Dec 2008 (Forum)
a brief history, cam belt went and all relevant work was apparently done, car was driven for over a thousand miles with no problems, 1st full tank of deisel about 2 months ago started to produce some white smoke under heavy acceleration and gradually as i worked my way through that tank of fuel it got worse, heavy acceleration produced a cloud of black smoke, upon reading many forums i took a look at the air filter and indeed it was clogged, nice easy job, new filter in and i still have the same problem, second full tank of diesel and and smoke is getting worse, 0-60 in 2 minutes to keep the smoke lvl down, car has full power and drives lovely as long as i dont look in the mirrors, i have also changed the fuel filter, it may be coincidental but the internal heater wires connection became black, crispy and intermitent, that has been fixed and is working fine, also i have noticed in the past week that the engine temp is not getting higher than 70 degrees even on a 80 mile trip, not sure why that is but i put some hardboard between the two rads to block airflow, with one eye on the temp guage and one hand on the internal fan switch i kept the temp around the 90 degree mark, but still the smoke, no matter what temp the guage sais i am getting lovely hot air in the car, also i have added diesel redex in these last two tanks of fuel, but everywhere i read sais redex is good, any good advise on how to resolve this and get my car back to not poluting everyone who is behind me will be gratefully recieved
  • Peugeot 407 (2004 - ) - 2004 2.0 HDI 136 Fuel Economy 9 Oct 2008 (Forum)
either way I think from owning diesels and talking to other diesel car owners that there is either something wrong or the economy on these Pugs is pathetic. Are there any things to go to the dealer armed with, any possible explanations?
  • Volkswagen Touran MPV (2003 - ) - 04 1.9 Forecourt Diesel Pump Cuts out all the time 9 Sep 2008 (Forum)
OK, I've been living with this for a while, but fortunately, the mileage is low on the Touran now, so it's an annoyance only once in a while. Whenever I fill up at any petrol station with Diesel, the pump cuts out at very low fill rate. i.e. I'm pulling the pump handle so gently that the flow of diesel means I can take 10 minutes filling the tank from empty to 50 Litres. If I squeeze any harder, it cuts out constantly, even at the low flow rate it still cuts out occasionally.
  • Astra Diesel 22 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Our W-Reg Diesel Astra Estate> has recently caused us some concern. There has been a sudden loss of power - hills which we used to fly up over in fifth gear now require us to change down through the gears. This is our second diesel Astra - the other we kept to 170,000 miles and never had this trouble with it. > We've changed the EGR valve.
  • Volkswagen Bora - Brain teaser.. 52 plate Bora 1.9 TDI wont start 18 May 2014 (Forum)
When the car is cranked over, all readings on my mates snap on diagnostic seem correct. We used a NOID to check the trigger signal to the injectors and all appear ok. When the fuel feed or return to the tandem pump is removed fuel sprays out therefore lift pump is working and filter not blocked. Fuel is clean diesel too. No engine oil in it or veg oil present. With the dreaded easi start hastily sprayed in to the inlet the engine will run but it is running on the easi start.
  • Renault Kangoo - Double pre-heat 1 Jul 2004 (Forum)
So far the responses from Renault have been "can't find anything wrong with it", "We have tightened the fuel pump and checked for leaks", and, once again, "we can't find anything wrong with it". On this occasion, they have found an entry in the error log relating to the problem (which was missing on all previous visits), and the diagnosis is a faulty fuel pump.

He has checked the fuel computer and is convinced its accurate, i assume by brimming and comparing. Seat have had the car back and can find nothing wrong, but they do say that a customer who bought the sister vehicle to my friends is complaining of his fuel consumption too.

  • Vectra DTi Starting .. the last straw 23 Mar 2004 (Forum)
I have a 'W' reg Vectra 2.0 DTi which has had the common problem of not starting if left for a while. Accepted wisdom on this problem is that it is caused by air leaks in the fuel system. This is generally cured by replacing the bleed off pipes, changing the injector seals, replacing the filter housing and fitting a non-return valve in the fuel pipe. So we tried all that. No joy.
  • Citroen Xantia (1993 - 2000) - 00 2.0 HDi Fuel Problems 6 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Xantia HDi 90bhp RHY engine, new Sept 2000, 108k, several previous owners, I've put about 1,200 miles on it. It cut out. Taken to my usual Citroen agent. Verdict HP Fuel Pump, estimated repair cost more than value of car. Got a pump (same part no) from ebay. Mate of son (time served, and experienced diesel mechanic) fitted this, but it won't start. His kit gets code P0230 (he doesn't have specific Citroen software).
  • Toyota Previa (1990 - 2000) - 1996 2.2 (Emina 3C-TE) - Won't start when hot. 5 Jun 2008 (Forum)
My father priced one in New Zealand, where he lives and he was told that it will cost 11thousand dollars for a new electronic fuel pump. Yes 11thousand! Apparently it will have to come from Japan or something. I am wondering though, if it was the fuel pump wouldnt it be playing up all the time? not just when it was hot? Any other suggestions?
  • Smokey Ford Escort 1.8TD 9 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Is there a fuel pump issue here? maybe injectors have faulty pressure springs inside them? or maybe the fuel return system is not working correctly? Shouldnt this unwanted/unused fuel be returned somehow instead of being chucked out the exhaust?
  • Recommendations on used cars! 24 Aug 2013 (Forum)
What sort of things should I be looking for in used diesels? And could anyone recommend reliable, reasonably fuel efficient (or more efficient than my current focus) cars which have sensible servicing costs? Ideally after a car which isn't smaller than the focus!

  • Peugeot 306 1.9D - 1999 Peugeot 306 diesel pump replacement 16 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Hi, I have a non-turbo version of a 306 diesel. Unfortunately, the pump died a death (horrible Lucas pump!!!!) whilst I was driving along. Now, I've changed a pump before on an old 405 TD and found it to be a pig - mainly in the undoing of the nuts that hold the pump on.
  • Vectra C - diesel or petrol Vauxhall? 16 Apr 2010 (Forum)
I was looking for a Seat Leon, astra, focus size but the value comparision to the Vectra is leading me there. Having spent a lot of time reading this forum on the problems of modern diesels I resolved to go for petrol.  Then the price of fuel started to climb and I'm wondering if I know what to look for, and what to do in the way of preventative maintenance, I could avoid really damaging expense.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2005 2.0 diesel - engine fault 2 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I really need some help from people who know about Ford Mondeo diesel engines. I have a 2005 Mondeo on which the warranty runs out in March. The car has had a new fuel pump under warranty. Sometimes the car still runs badly and goes into limp mode. The car has been at the dealer and they have tried to recode an injector but say that this has failed and a new injector will need to be fitted.
  • Rapeseed oil in diesel 23 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I remember it has to have below a certain level of sulphur and above a certain level of esters, but I'm no chemist. I just think shoving foodstuff in a car's diesel tank and having an improvement is quite something! I'd be treating it as more of an additive than a fuel as such. Please no "THERE'S NO DIFFERENCE" posts. I'm not trying to change anyone's mind here.
