  • 2003 Ford KA Duratec - Strange only-when-warm-low-rpm hesitation! 21 Dec 2011 (Forum)
Here is what I've changed so far: - Plugs - Leads - Coilpack - Front Lambda - Rear Lambda - Fuel filter - Cleaned all engine earths - Cleaned TPS - Cleaned throttle body   Help! Nothing seems to fix the problem. I've of course done oil / filter / coolant changes. Bit of back history - before I met my girlfriend she thought the MOT was servicing, so the car did around 3 years and 30k on the same oil etc. I'm not sure if this could be part of the issue...
  • Vauxhall Corsa C (2000 - 2006) - 01 1.2 Engine cuts out and EML comes on. 6 Feb 2011 (Forum)
After the car has cut out just the once it runs fine apart from the occasional splutter when accelerating or cruising along. I have replaced the coolant temperature sensor, replaced the air filter, and put Redex through the throttle body (carberator), to no avail, the problem still persists! When the car has been stood a while, ie. overnight, the rev counter works, until it does the cutting out thing again, but the engine block light is now permanently on, and it seems to be using more fuel than usual.
  • Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 95 1.8 High exhaust emissions at high idle. 12 Feb 2010 (Forum)
The print out from the test centre gives the following information: RESULTS Engine oil temperature 69 C Low Idle CO 0.14 vol% Pass (880rpm) HC 30.00ppm Pass High Idle Lambda 1.01 Pass (2920rpm) CO 0.38 vol% Fail (above 0.3% ) HC 18.00ppm Pass The catalytic convertor was replaced last year so is hopefully not the cause of the problem as it was very expensive to replace. I have also replaced the air filter and the coolant temperature sensor. A local mechanic has suggested that I put an injector cleaner into the fuel and let it do it's stuff before I take it in for a retest. He has also told me that there is no adjustment of the idle settings on the car.

  • Mazda Mazda 6 (2002 - 2007) - 02 1.8 Fluid leaking from beneath the engine 28 Jun 2009 (Forum)
A kind chap at a filling station spotted fluid leaking from beneath the engine on my Mazda6 about an hour ago. Closer examination reveals this to be coolant which is dripping quite furiously while the engine is running. I carefully drove the five miles or so to my home while keeping a close eye on the various warning lights etc, then had a closer look.
  • Antifreeze - a cautionary tale 31 May 2009 (Forum)
Don't know the names of them TBH but the one in the car was the new pink long life type apparently. When I got a coolant change some 18 months or so ago it would appear the old style 'blue' stuff was used and the system hadn't been flushed. As a consequence there was a reaction between the two, causing a corrosive (It apparently it particularly harmful to aluminium components) sludgy, jelly like substance to form through the entire cooling system.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 99 1.8 Engine cooling system question? 25 May 2009 (Forum)
Would this suggest a head gasket problem ? Would any of these symptoms suggest a problem with the coolant pump, radiator or any related component ?
  • Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - 00 1.6 cutting out & erratic temp gauge. 28 Sep 2008 (Forum)
It still did this when the temp gauge was working properly. The most obvious cause appears to be the coolant temp sensor and i understand how the cutting out could occur. I'm not too sure about to over revving though. It is likely to be the sensor deteriating and giving incorrect readings? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.
  • Honda Shuttle/Odyssey (1995 - 2000) - 1999 2.3 Holds 2nd gear in kick-down 25 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Car is going to my local indy at the end of the week for a full service. Will ask hime to change all fluids incl. auto oil, brake fluid coolant etc. Don't mind spending quite a bit on this as I bought it cheap and love it.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 1999 1.8 (petrol) engine oil level 17 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I took my Ford Focus into the Ford garage yesterday to have the rocker cover gasket repaired as it had a slight leak. They also topped up my engine oil and coolant. When I checked the oil level first thing this morning (before running the engine), on level ground, it was slightly above the max notch by about 2 to 3 mm. After I checked the oil I drove to the shops about 4 miles away and after I had been in the shops (55 minutes after switching the engine off) I rechecked the oil level on the dipstick and this time it was 3 or 4 mm below the max notch.
  • Ford Mondeo IV (2007 - ) - TDCi "transient overboost" -- what triggers it? 8 Jul 2008 (Forum)
--> or is the ECU clever enough to give overboost if the pedal is 'stabbed' quickly, over a certain defined range of pedal travel? --> is it only available in certain conditions (i.e. coolant / oil temp above a certain range, exhaust gas temp in a certain range etc) I would have thought the driver has to actively initiate it with a determined right foot -- especially after the "unintended acceleration" lawsuit that hit Audi in the US in the 80s.
  • Audi 80 Mk II (1991-1995) - 2.0E 93L - Battery running flat 26 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Replacing that means draining the system and getting one which costs 12 pound roughly. Luckily I had a old radiator which had one in also i put fresh coolant in and you wouldnt believe the mucjk that came out. Took an hour to replace and very simple on mine with limited mach knowledge and a haynes manual This will probably be the case for most water cooled cars, like i said it worked for me Thanks
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 02 TDCI fan cycle duration. 23 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Clearly this is not doing any major harm as it has done it for the last 100k as far as I remember and it does not lose coolant or anything. Of course I can't be sure due to road / engine noise, but I don't think it does it on the move due to the cooling effect of outside air through the radiator. Must cause quite a significant voltage drop though, as can be seen if the car is facing the garage door at night with headlights on.
  • 99 Mercedes C220 CDI temperature rise 4 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Hi, Just recently my 1999 Mercedes C220 CDi temperature gauge has started to rise higher than it has before I have checked the electric fan and that seems to be running OK but the gauge still rises above the normal centre position, It hasn't boiled over its just that its worried me when I'm in traffic as soon as the road clears the gauge goes back to normal or sometimes slightly lower than normal. The antifreeze/coolant hasn't been changed for 2.5 years would that make any difference, and has the fan got 2 speeds as while it is turning quiet fast and you can't see the fan blades it really doesn't seem be steaming it around, I have said that because on an old car I had years ago the electric fan really used to make a lot of noise when it was going and the Mercedes one doesn't Is That Normal I would appreciate any suggestion, it could just be me ??
  • popping inside engine, peugeot engine 10 Apr 2007 (Forum)
The head has just been rebuilt so is known good in all aspects, compression test shows up nothing untoward, oil pressure is spot on, coolant is dead level, fuel/air is right at idle and it only makes the noise at idle. Ive got a quick vid of it, first from the exhaust and then from the gunson so you can see it defiunatley up the engine end and you can see the brighter flashes.
  • Clio 1.2 Erratic running 19 Apr 2005 (Forum)
At idle it occasionally misses, but a couple of times it just refuses to respond to the throttle, usually coming back after a moment or two. I wondered about coolant temp sensor, but it seems to idle at about 1200 cold, dropping back to 800 or so when warm as expected, and doesn't seem to be using excessive fuel. Has the feel of an earth fault on the ECU to me, or maybe the ECU is developing a dry joint?
  • Morons. 16 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Can't recall all the figures exactly but 1 in 8 had no idea what the rear demister switch was for, about 30-40% had no idea what the air-bag failure warning light was and a similar proportion couldn't identify the coolant temperature gauge! The mind boggles.
  • omega 2.0 engine 26 Nov 2004 (Forum)
hi folks , I have been searching all day for some where i can get a 2 liter engine for my omega, i brought it a month ago and it was running great but had 1 months mot so got it cheap, i tried to mot it today and it failed on emitions, it smokes a bit at start up and idles erraticly the garage told me the engine has had it , i got it compression tested this after noon and was told 2 pots have low compression, then the guy turned around and told me he would part-ex my car for £500 against any car on his fore court which sounded dodgy to me so am not sure about what he said now, i did an oil change 2 weeks ago and the oil was ok no water or coolant. have read the conversations and am thinking about the engine centre in stratford london , has any one used them and what are they like can i trust them , i live in cambridgeshire if you know any where else better, cheers,
  • 306td...no ignition?? 29 May 2004 (Forum)
The glow plugs have been checked and are glowing as expected. There is no pressure coming back through the coolant and you can here it 'popping' through the exhaust as it is turned over. The fuel pump has not been disturbed so the pump internal timing should be fine. It is not an immobiliser problem. Its cracking me up, can anybody shed any light on other possible causes?
  • Spurious VW leak 9 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I'm wondering if any of the recnt work I've had done could have resulted in this. Could it be an AC coolant leak? I'm quite unaware of the possibilities so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thx. S. PS My temp gauge has not been working for a while now, still waiting for VW to check it out and let me know what the problem is.
