Speed Workshops 4 Feb 2009 (Forum)
She said that it was very imformative, they were shown video of a real car hits person accident at 35 mph and got the statistics stuff as normal. She said it was scary seeing it but makes sense why 30 is important around town. They also discussed the varying limits for different types of vehicles, how easy it is to creep over and how to manage your speed, the accuracy of your speedo etc etc. She said it wasnt in the least patronising and was happy that a portion of the money raised went to the air ambulance and courses for young drivers. -
Nissan Micra (1992 - 2003) - Micra engine lifespan? 2 Feb 2009 (Forum)
There have been a few fairly cheap examples with 50-90k on them but as a high percentage of micra owners will be OAPs and people who have never had a car serviced in their life because they have only done 4k of driving over the 3 years they've had it, the low mileage doesn't straight away strike me as the most important factor. On the other hand I've found one an hour's drive away with 1L, 120k on the clock, 2 previous owners & 12 months MOT. Is it likely to cover much more ground? Cheers, Tom -
Used car suggestions 5-6k 26 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Trying to stay away from common rail diesels, just seem too unreliable (and expensive), the current pug has apperently been very good for a common rail, Eek!. Anybody know of any other cars that might be worth consideration? Engine more important then brand/model. -
Best value used small car? 8 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Originally I was looking for a 1 year old vehicle so it was still in warranty and quite a bit of devaluation had come off, however perhaps warranty isn't important nowadays since cars are far more reliable than they used to be so a 4 to 5 year old might be best value? -
Decisions, decisions...Fiat Panda or Toyota Yaris? 30 Jan 2008 (Forum)
We're having our first baby in May, and are looking for a second car for Lucy to drive around while I'm at work. Lucy is a nervous driver, so size was important, basically, the smaller the better. We really want to buy from an Approved Used dealer, but this has drastically cut down our options, as the dealers don't like putting dodgy cars on their forecourts! -
Audi A6 + RS6 (1997 - 2004) - 2000 Quattro - Central Locking & Electric Windows 8 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Is this an officially bad idea ? Where might I find the fuse box ? Is the fuse shared with anything else of importance ? Thanks in advance. -

Ford Focus Zetec vs Ghia - please help! 29 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Have seen loads now and it's come down to 2 alternatives: Focus Zetec, 2000, 2 prev owners (originally from NI, so sort of an import)), 60k miles, reasonable condition but with some rust on the inside, which worries me, £3900. or... Focus Ghia, metallic blue, 2001, 1 previous owner (big leasing company), 62k mileage, really good internal condition, £3850. -
Car insurance for foreign national 22 May 2006 (Forum)
I had to re-sit tests in order to get UK licence - now that I'm resident - which I successfully passed 3 weeks ago. 3. I have just imported the jeep from Japan. 4. I'm 24 years old. 5. I can't insure the car under my wife's name as she doesn't drive. My question is: should insurers take into consideration my clean slate back in Dominica, or does the clock start from the day I get my UK drivers licence? -
Mitsubishi RVR - Opinions please 17 May 2006 (Forum)
I have been thinking about a Mitsubishi RVR - a grey import, was wondering if anyone could give me any opinions on these vehicles,as they are a "bit different" and might suit my purpose. I need something to occaisionally tow a 4 berth caravan, must have auto transmission ( I would fit a fluid cooler to protect the 'box), and would like diesel for economy purposes. -
Getting a car into Ireland sans tax? 17 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Thing is the vehicle registration tax -estimated at 25 percent of the cars price, which is mandatory for cars imported into ireland. Although if i have owned the car for six months in the uk, i dont have to pay this. Any savvy punters out there know a good way for me to buy the car here and not pay the VRT? Apologies if this is a bit out of place, but this seems like a likely place to look for answers. -
Toyota Avensis Advice 5 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Why should there be such a large difference in price? What should I look out for on the cheaper one (ie is there anything likely to be wrong with it. Import perhaps? both specs on t'Internet look similar) What sort of money should I reasonably expect to pay for either of these cars? I suppose I could get the more expensive one for about the same price as the cheaper one by waving a print-out of the details at the salesman but what could I get the cheaper one for? -
306 HDi - Engine/Sump Guard Broken 2 Nov 2004 (Forum)
As it doesnt seem strong enough to provide any mechanical protection to the sump etc, or be sufficient to completely seal the engine from water spray it is difficult to see what function the guard provides. My question is, does this item have any important function or can I safely save myself £140+ by not having it fixed? Thanks MikeC -
classic car insurance abroad 6 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I'm not sure if this counts as a technical query, but it's certainly giving me grief... I live in France and I am trying to buy a classic car in the UK to bring over here. Importing it doesn't appear to be a problem but I want to insure it the way I insured my old cars in the UK, ie a straightforward classic car policy. Problem is, over here classic insurance seems to be dirt cheap but all you get is the equivalent of third party cover and no agreed valuation. -
Emissions Enigma 23 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Of course as ever the bleedin' obvious is never obvious. Get the old rolling coffins off the roads and stop importing 20 year old rusty buses which have spent their lives clanking around Beijing or Taipei for 2million km.. But then how many gov't officials and police officers own illegal bus lines as a sideline? -
Zafira or New Corolla Verso? 2 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Firstly, does anybody have any views on how these cars compare - I've looked around for a head-to-head but haven't seen one. Secondly, total cost of ownership is important to me, I expect I'll keep the car for 2 to 3 years, so am keen to see how much I will lose due to depreciation over this period. That's easy to work out for the Zafira, from historical data, but I'm not sure what kind of guesswork I could do for the Toyota. -
MX6 cambelt 9 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Timing belt failure can mean disaster and replacing the belt is a 3 hour job. Check which engine the car has because some RHD imports have 2.0 litre Xedos 6 engine." Could someone clarify this for me - Thanks in advance!! -
Improved Forum Search. 9 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Have fun Oh, and BTW, if you see a big difference between numbers of posts for a particular person and that shown in their profile, it\'s because the archive forum uses their name as a text string - it came from the old open source phorum data imported, whilst the profile uses the user id in the newer posts of this software. ---------------------------------- Stephen Khoo http://www.khoosys.net -
Forester sturbo vs xtrail tdi 23 May 2003 (Forum)
Forester seem to hold their value incredibly well but will this carry on as they get older?, dealer prices seem to vary wildly, do they just pitch them high and expect big negotiations. Imports can be had for £17.5k and they still want £13k for a 3yr old 50k car. Any opinions on the cars themselves? I figure the sturbo is faster better handling but less cargo space whereas the xtrail is newer therefore less problems, better looking (!) -
MR2 Mk1 Supercharged. 20 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Has done about 8,000 (yes 8K) miles in the UK which is about the last 5/6 years. and did about 30K miles in Japan previous to its IMPORT. (Of course not proveable but does it matter on a car this old?) It is a right hand drive AUTOMATIC. I understand these cars are rare as only a limited number of MR2 SCs were made hence l would expect a higher than normal price but...£3K?
