  • Do CVT gearboxes actually work ? 29 Jul 2009 (Forum)
How do they compare to the same make and model of car but with a manual transmission ? Is it true that a car with a CVT gearbox can not tow any extra weight (trailer / caravan) ? I am also interested to know how they drive, do you put your foot down and the revs stay at 3,000rpm all of the time until the speed is higher ? How do you perform a kick down like in a normal automatic ?

  • French Autoroute Breakdown 11 Feb 2009 (Forum)
They had breakdown cover with AA, and BMW (manufacturer's cover) but neither covered them on the autoroute: They had to pay 150 Euros (cash, of course) to be towed off the autoroute to a point where their own breakdown insurers could assist. Having driven through France regularly for the last 20 something years, there's something I didn't know... sounds like I need to carry a breakdown fund of 150 notes!
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 1998 - Immobiliser/Key/ECU reset 20 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Just had my 1998 Ford Focus towed to the Ford Dealers by the RAC as the immobiliser is frozen on and all the codes lost in the key and ECU unit. Radio display says "CODE --------". Any ideas how much it will cost to have it all reset and a new key?
  • Land Rover Discovery (1989 - 1998) - 1996 3.9 Gases in the cooling system. 7 Dec 2008 (Forum)
The garage says it must be the block. So is it scrap or is there anything else to look for? It's used by the old lady for towing horses so must be reliable.
  • is there a breakdown service to suit me ? 4 Aug 2008 (Forum)
my partner and i run 3 older cars (88,89,91) and feel i ought to have some kind of basic break down cover not intrested in any home start or fancy ad ons , all i want is one policy that would cover both drivers and all cars in the event we break down away from home id like a service that will tow us home and not to a garage as i do all my own repairs /maintenence does such a service exist for sensible money?
  • Driving Teeside-South Wales Sat 30 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I'll be travelling Teeside - Derby on Fri which I do regularly but haven't driven down to Wales for years and wondered if there were any current road/traffic issues to avoid? Planned route would be A38/M42/M5/M4 I think BTW I'll be towing our 'van, so no suggestions for routes down narrow B-roads please!
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - Nationwide Autocentre - Clutch Change 8 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Has anyone used Nationwide Autocentre for a replacement clutch. Ours on the Mondeo would probably last another couple of years but for this years towing holiday to Scotland in August. Having looked at the route I must get it done before we go. They claim trained technicians, quality parts and give a two year warranty. Cost is about £320 for my 2 litre petrol which seems good.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 04 1.9 intermittent failure to start 6 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Hi, can anyone please help. After heavy rain my diesel estate refuses to start. Called out rescue, towed to garage, guess what the car started. This has been happening for months. The car will go for weeks then no go again. Seems like the imobilizer. Also the bonnet lock is faulty. Any connection. Joe.
  • HGV - manual or auto 20 Apr 2008 (Forum)
I have never been in the cab of a lorry [well once I was when my previous car had to be towed, but it had 5-speed gears like cars]. I heard that most big lorries have 5 - 16 gears! I like to know how do the drivers operate those gears. I don't even know whether big articulated lorries are manual or automatic.
  • Clamp Release Fee 27 Jul 2007 (Forum)
I think I have just seen a record price - £195 to release your car from a clamp, undisclosed amount if they 'tow'. The immediate area has just been re-vamped with up-market shops and the pub carpark is next to the public carpark. People have used the carpark when in the pub attached and got a ticket from the bar to prove they had been there.

  • W123 CE - what to look for? 27 May 2007 (Forum)
I'm selling my camper - too slow, I've decided, and not much use outside the summer months. I'm buying a classic caravan, a 1969 Eriba, from Holland, and I'd like a suitable car to tow it. I realise that the 123 is a bit later, but I do like the look of them. Like most things, it seems there's a range from £300 for a rot box to £lots for a full restoration. What faults are real-show stoppers, and what should I be looking for?
  • '03 Mercedes E320 CDI Trans oil cooler 3 May 2007 (Forum)
I tow a large caravan with this car and want to fit an auxilliary oil cooler to the transmission. The people at Kenlowe have been helpful but we need to know which gearbox is in the car, ZF or Borg Warner, also which hydraulic circuit is the existing oil-to-water cooler in, the high supply side or the low return side.
  • Kerb weight Mercedes E320CDi W210 14 Sep 2006 (Forum)
The only weight figure in the V5C log book tells me 1780 kg, The chassis plate says 2340, 4440 and 1040 kg but no indication as to what each figure refers to. I need to know which figure to use to calculate the percentage for towing a caravan. Thanks Andrew -- Simplicate and add lightness!!
