  • Cars which don't attract prejudice 30 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Alternatively a Mk1 Golf GTi could maybe swing it if it was completely standard and in a dark colour, but that's a bit old for reliable driving and modern service intervals. One friend eventually went for a Renault Safranne because it isn't "aspirational", wasn't expensive as a 2 year old car and most people wouldn't remember what it was.
  • Bit of a discussion 5 Mar 2003 (Forum)
interestingly, but just coincidence another life was lost in the north east on that same saturday evening, the only similarity was the cars involved. they both drove vauxhall caviliers. no i know these are very old cars and safety wasn't even an issue those days, but even my 406 gets a 44% ncap test result, which just doesn't make me "feel" safe.

  • MOT on used car 8 Jun 2007 (Forum)
If buying a 3.5-year old used car, say for £8,000 from a dealer, it will likely have several months MOT on it. But that not withstanding, is it logical to go and get another one at the cost of £50, on the basis that it is a cheap, albeit incomplete, form of inspection, safety check-up, and if there's anything wrong with it, you will quite likely get the dealer to pay for it.

Hi, I have a car that is almost 3 year old and it is due its FIRST MOT in November 2006. Can I take the car in for its first MOT in September 2006? This is because I will be in the USA for 6mths from October 2006.
  • VW passat 22 Dec 2002 (Forum)
considering a new model of this car as maybe my next purchase, probably diesel. quite concerned with the car by car breakdown reports though as the previous model got bad reviews, along with the golf, and this is not what i would expect.
  • TR7 - Buying a seized car 28 Dec 2012 (Forum)
Hi new to the forum, What happens if one buys a car that has been seized? As I understand it the car would have been seized for a different debt as it is old so unlikely to be outstanding finance on the vehicle itself. I'm presuming the car won't have a V5 either.
  • Most boring car owner? 21 Mar 2006 (Forum)
So am I the world's most boring car owner? Unique? Or just 'old'? Oz (as was)
  • Grand estates 5 May 2020 (Forum)
Later cars became a bit too complex and reliability failed under Ford but today’s examples look great inside and out thanks to the Chinese effectively giving Swedish engineers a blank cheque. Not sure I like the complexity though, I prefer my old basic wagons.
  • Toyota Yaris - Small SUV advice 18 Jul 2025 (Forum)
I do not want a huge car and a petrol is fine for the miles I do I have a toddler who is on a high percentile and is growing like mad and we also have a large dog,I would be aiming to spend no more than around 10k. My old Yaris is so reliable and I would like a reliable car again there as re so many options and I feel extremely overwhelmed!
  • Mazda 3 - Rust in Mazda 3 24 Nov 2021 (Forum)
Given we have had two rust issues it’s probably not the keeper I thought was. Or do many nine year old cars now have rust if you look for it? My faith in Japanese cars is being dented by this coming on top of my previous 2012 Civic suffering from the oil consumption issue.
  • Peugeot 508 GT 2.2 HDI FAP saloon - Automatic gearbox failure at 80,000 miles 7 Nov 2016 (Forum)
Bought car 18 months ago at under 3 years old and 75,000 miles, knowing it was out of warranty but took out Peugeot service plan.  Delighted with car until last week when "repair gearbox" warning messages started appearing (but no driving issues), apparently on upchanges from 3rd from 4th.
  • Honda Civic Hatchback - Which car - 2008/15k miles VS 2011/65k miles? 21 Jan 2016 (Forum)
I'm after a Honda Civic Hatchback. I have found a Honda Approved one with extremely low mileage of 15k but it's 8 years old. Or there's one near me (not approved) which is 5 years old but has 65k miles. The latter one looks a lot nicer, has better features etc. But my main priority is reliability and longevity. I want to keep this car for 5 years minimum and will be doing 15k miles per year.
  • Advice on a 3-4 year old hatchback needed ! :) 16 Sep 2015 (Forum)
Hello everyone. I'll start by saying - I have no clue about cars. I work in IT and I research gadgets, tech and cameras day and night, however I never...
  • Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - 93 1.4 head gasket replacement! 15 May 2009 (Forum)
I have a leaky head gasket, which I've managed to avoid attempting to replace by using an additive called 'K-Seal'' This has worked fine for about 4000 miles but, despite a fresh application the old problem is back with a vegeance! Has anyone out there changed a head gasket on one of these? Looking at the Haynes manual it looks a tad daunting (I'm also conscious of the fact that nuts and bolts on a 15 year-old car are often a bit reluctant to come off!!).
  • false info on insurance - what happens these days? 16 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I worked in insurance years ago, so I'm out of date. Here's the (short) story. 63 year old man, violent, universally disliked, keeping his old Mondeo on the road out of spite towards his neighbours, even though he's banned. The car is legal at the moment and never moves. The ban expires in a few weeks (it was 2 years for drink driving).

  • Least depreciating car - £8,500 8 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Hi all, With upto £8,500 to spend, what is the least depreciation car to run for 2-3 years? The criterias are 4 seats, not over 4-5 year-old (anything older and I would worry about electronics) & 50k to 100k on the clock, RWD or with RWD handling characteristics, good ride & handling and reasonably quiet on the motorway.
