  • MoTs every 2/3 years instead of annual inspection 11 Feb 2008 (Forum)
The current MoT is some way to ensuring a degree of mechanical reliability - however if 10% of cars have no road tax or insurance then probably 10%+ have no MoT! No amount of speed cameras will catch unregistered cars or cars with false plates.

  • Driving in Amsterdam 28 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Or more precisely being driven - En-route from Schiphol to city centre hotel last week our (company contract) taxi was driving under the gantries about 20 kph over the posted (variable) signed limit (80kpH). I was just asking the driver ?don?t you have speed cameras over here? when a saloon cut in front of us and a little dot matrix board popped up with ?volgie politie? (or something close to that ? follow police). We were escorted to lay-by, driver questioned and then told to take us to the hotel and come back to the police station.
  • Low Emission Zone London 11 Dec 2007 (Forum)
If you drive within it you will need to pay the Congestion Charge in addition to any applicable LEZ charge unless you are exempt. The scheme will be enforced by cameras just like the Congestion Charge. Therefore, the existing CC area could easily be extended overnight to include this larger area! Be aware!
  • Sick Renault dCi 25 Feb 2006 (Forum)
When I got home I phoned my local dealer and when I gave the symptoms was told to take it for a really hard drive and report back if no better. So I did. Choosing my route carefully to avoid cameras, I gave that tiny 1.5 engine a change of diet from its usual pottering around. Took it up to 5000rpm for a while, you should have seen the black trail coming out the back. Definitely loosened some crud, it was still a bit smokey when I started it this morning.
  • Police, 'cheddar', action! 4 Feb 2006 (Forum)
'Cheddar' - well there was no 'camera' involved! I was driving north up the M5 last night on cruise at about 75 mph a couple of miles before my exit, Burnham on Sea. I could see blue flashing lights behind me though they were only catching very slowly, I thought it might be some kind of escorted convoy.
  • Road Safety? 8 Nov 2005 (Forum)
This seems an amazing paradox that many of us will get a fine and points for'unsafe' driving as determined by a safety camera, but a clear case of unsafe practice where the lives of inncocent children are at stake is literally ignored. Could there be any reasonable explanation as to why at least two police officers thought such a practice was safe?
  • Intimidation, what do i do? 15 Oct 2005 (Forum)
A young lad in a white van quite literally feet from my bumper trying to intimidate me to go faster even though i'm at 40mph which is the temporary camera enforced limit on this piece of road. I tire of his pathetic and unessecary driving i gesture for him to back off with my hand. as polite as i can be, Arrive at roundabout at the end of roadworks, he pulls alongside and wants to fight me!!
  • Red lights 14 May 2005 (Forum)
3: Did the car in front of me shoot over it just as it turned to red and I followed him not noticing? 4: Do they have cameras at pedestrian crossings? There are little CCTV things on the top of the traffic lights around here. Finally, what in the world suggested to the city planners that they should put a set of traffic lights and a crossing on the other side of a blind corner on a fast road?
  • Yipee it's here 13 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I believe that when you load a car with extras it changes the economics of used car values. Three bits of advice / thoughts please 1. Do I de-badge it? 2. I need to install a camera / radar detector but need to be fitted discretly, with possible radar unit behind front grill. Who is the best manufacturer of this type of unit. 3. Or do I get dealer to fit Trafficmaster As an aside it looks like SWMBO will pick up the car as I have been in the Yemen drilling for Oil since 27 Dec and it looks like I won't be home until April.......rats rats rats.
  • Moron flatmate sells car without V5 22 Feb 2005 (Forum)
As such, while there is a chance that the new buyer will deal with the paperwork correctly, there is a stronger chance that my friend will be left exposed to every speed camera and red light east of Reading, as well as a possible fine from the DVLA for not updating the change of keeper. (I will run an RAC plate check against the car, to see if the 'last owner changed' has been updated, but I don't yet know the plate and that takes a while to update).
  • We're all criminals now 24 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Another scam, which I hadn't heard of before, was the bus lanes where you can drive your car during certain hours/days but the times change along the same lane, with a tiny sign parallel to the road to say so! Naturally, there is a CCTV camera at that point so, unless you know the area and you're pretty nifty, another nip up your shirt. Finally, we have all wondered where those "increasing numbers" of policemen went. Well, some of them were seen attached for protection to 'environmental wardens' as they issued £50 tickets to people for dropping cigarette butts amongst all the far larger detritus presumably dropped outside the office hours the wardens are bound to keep.
  • Tyre life: a report 30 Nov 2003 (Forum)
    * Lane-change indicating seems to be out of fashion on the M3. P.S. There's some good stuff on speed cameras in today's Daily Telegraph.
  • wrong car, right car 3 Apr 2003 (Forum)
i particularly enjoy episodes when then test the more sportier cars. the guy had a bright purple tvr camera and was looking for a 35k car of a prestigiuos quality, he tried the new BMW, porsche 911, a ferrari, a jag xk8 and a number of others and in the end, still wasnt satisfied till he got another tvr.
  • tax disc (or lack of) on european import 13 Nov 2002 (Forum)
When the DVLA send my V5 and tax disc (hopefully Tuesday) the tax will be from 01/11 so can I get away with picking it up on Saturday and should I be worried about cameras that can read my registration and are linked to the DVLA to check for tax? To me this seems like a crazy process where you have to insure your car for a period that you can't drive it (the time taken by the DVLA).
  • Home thoughts from abroad; or vice-versa 3 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Only a bit hairy around CDG airport. At the end, back to Dover and miles of the M20 contraflowed with SPECS cameras enforcing the 50 limit (thanks, Geodesy!). So, with property a quarter of the price of Surrey, what am I doing here? I'm thinking very hard on that one. Sorry to ramble on but you know how it is after a holiday.....
  • 2017-2018 - Skoda Yeti advice 24 Jul 2025 (Forum)
I am looking forward to having Android Auto and I know that many Yetis have reversing sensors but I love having a reversing camera I know these can be fitted later. one thing I would love is a heated windscreen and heated seats! Thank you all!
  • Toyota Estima - Imported Estima vs 1.4 Sharan…or something else?!? 3 Mar 2024 (Forum)
I’m in the market for a spacious (and reliable) used 7 seater with a budget of £12,500 Must haves are: petrol, auto, heated front seats, raised seating position OR comfortable drive (due to my disability), reversing camera, room for 2 teenagers in all of the rear 5 seats (so no Qashqai+2 for ex.) but also not as big as a van styled motor such as the Alphard or Berlingo Would be nice: leather/half leather trim, tray tables to back of front seats, half decent mpg After much deliberation I’ve cut it down to an imported Estima vs 1.4 Sharan - around an 11 plate or newer, with less than 100k on the clock and good history (Verso is too small, XC90 worries me with repair bills, don’t fancy a Zafira, Galaxy, S Max, Grand Picasso, or Alhambra) Have I missed anything worth considering - such as an older X5?
  • Juke or yeti? - Best larger reliable car on a budget 24 Jul 2022 (Forum)
I am considering selling my Yaris and getting a bigger slightly newer car such as a Skoda Yeti or a Nissan Juke I think I would get around £4,000 to £5,000 for my Yaris and I was hoping to get a newer car for no more than say £11-12,000.Ideally I would like an Automatic this time with some mod cons like heated seats parking camera bluetooth etc but I also want it to be very reliable and relatively cheap to run and maintain, thank you
