Focus gearbox 8 Nov 2001 (Forum)
They assured me that aside from the noise it isn't a serious problem and should not cause any grief down the line, so I opted to save my hard-earned and live with it. I was wondering though whether it would be worthwhile having the gearbox oil changed, possibly for synthetic oil? -
Volkswagen Golf IV - White smoke from exhaust 14 Oct 2010 (Forum)
The trader said they couldnt find ANY white smoke coming from the exhaust so they just done a basic engine service, doing an oil change, new leads and plugs and a new air filter. When I questioned that none of those things would be a cause of excess oil being burnt they said the air filter was clogged up and this would cause it?! -
Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 95 1.4 Can too much oil in engine cause HG failure 18 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Hi all, just found this site and hoping someone here can help us out.. I took my g/f's Corsa to a garage to get it MOT'd last weds, passed no probs so I asked them to change the engine oil while it was there. On saturday the car stalled and there was oily water spilling out from a hole in the rad and smoke coming out from under the bonnet. I lifted the bonnet and thought it was engine oil everywhere, so after checking the oil level I found there was way too much oil in it. -

Running In 29 Dec 2001 (Forum)
new car first service due 10k miles or one year handbook contains no reference to "running in" (should I have an early oil change) engine 2.5ltr V6, I could ask the main dealer but prefer a wider opinion. Happy New Year. -
Good luck,gd management or gd Toyota ? 5 Oct 2003 (Forum)
At 81K miles it's still on original clutch, gearbox, exhaust, battery, pads and shoes (yes really). I had it new from a supersite for £12K. In 6 yrs it's had three Mobil 1 oil changes (DIY) per year, a cambelt change at 54K and is on its third set of Michelin tyres. It's had one new headlamp bulb, a new backlight of the dash clock, and a few sets of wipers.Apart from the cambelt change and MOTs, it's never been near a garage. -
Toyota Camry - Would you change coolant hoses 2 Feb 2020 (Forum)
My 1999 Toyota Camry has covered about 300k miles. It still runs well and is trouble free. Uses no oil or water. I hope to keep it maybe another 5 years. The coolant hoses are all original. They look and feel fine but they are 20 years old. Would you change them? Also would you change just the top and bottom hoses or also the other small-bore hoses to the heater and throttle body etc ? -
Volvo D5 cambelt change 2 Feb 2007 (Forum)
FWIW, the car has never used oil between services. Thx, WdB -
2004 VW Touran Diesel Difficult Shifting When Cold 21 Jun 2016 (Forum)
I've had a full service at my local Halfords in April so I am wondering if it has got anything to do with the issue. They changed engine oil with full synth but transmission oil was not changed. Gears shift perfectly fine when the engine is off. It’s so stiff sometimes as it’s impossible to put it into reverse or first gear. -
Vauxhall Corsa C - Corsa C won’t start first attempt, but will second 28 Nov 2014 (Forum)
SPARK PLUGS: Changed spark plugs, look fouled (see picture). http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/538/Uesw8H.jpg OIL: Changed oil, oil looked fine, but the filter is a mess, fit for the skip (pictured). -
Audi Q5 - Audi Q5 Tfsi oil consumption 13 Nov 2014 (Forum)
After some time he demanded oil consumption test after which we got result of aprox. 1l of oil on 1300km. Just one thing to be clear, this was the only time car succided to drive more than 800-900km without topping up so I believe they inserted more oil. -
Toyota servicing - is this reasonable? 20 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Just had a quote for a 3 year / 30k mile service on the Yaris which has rather stunned me. They want £118.50 for the service and another £50 to change the coolant which is due at the 3 year mark. According to the book, a 3 year service in an intermediate comprising oil and filter change with brake, tyre and light inspections. Also, as it's 30k there is an air filter change. -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 01 2.0 TDDI engine oil level increasing 2 Sep 2009 (Forum)
More or less coincident with the second hose problem, the engine oil level has started to increase - now above maximum - and it is believed to be caused by diesel fuel in the oil. Is this a known issue? I can't find it having searched all over the place. I understand the mechanic intends to replace the high pressure pump (which has a cost near the value of the car). -
Boshi Oil Filter 18 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Hello Folks, I have bought a supply of oil filters for my Vauxhall Monterey from Milner Offroad in Matlock. Thye were around £4.00 ea. compared with £11.50+ with my usual pattern ones. I don't even want to think about what OEM ones cost. With oil changes at 4500, this means quite a saving Milner are a long-established operation, and they say that they can sell at this price as they import themselves and buy in bulk. -
11 plate Suzuki Alto 25 Apr 2023 (Forum)
A Suzuki Alto 96k miles on a 11 plate Yesterday was the first time in its life it had been serviced including its first oil change. To his amazement the engine was fine before the change and while the oil in his words was ‘darker than hell’ there appeared no excessive engine wear. The car was recently passed down from a grandfather to a grand daughter who unlike grandad understood the value of a service. -
Volkswagen Golf MK4 - Transmission noise identification. 28 Feb 2023 (Forum)
Almost as if something is rubbing on a fraction of every rotation. Independent of which gear I'm in. Not much change from coasting to a bit of throttle. Noticeably reduced when cornering to the left. Smoother noise at >55mph, noisy at 45! There is quite a bit of oil under the car near the inner ends of the driveshafts. -
Vauxhall Astra 1.8 vvt 2006 - camshaft worn and loud, likely any other damage? 15 Aug 2019 (Forum)
My dad did one years ago on a vauxhall 1.6 8v and had no further engine problems, however i am aware these engines are a lot more sophisticated than those old units. She has had the oil changed every two years and 5,000 miles, as only does 2,500 a year. Is it worth getting the camshaft changed or better with a new engine? Many thanks -
I feel great! Fixed temp gauge problem! 20 Jul 2007 (Forum)
I've never really taken an interest in cars until I bought one and now I think I've got the bug! I can't wait for next week when I'll be doing some more work on it like replacing air/oil/fuel filters and replacing the oil. Oh, and replacing the sparks. I'm fairly confident of being able to do those jobs myself (and maybe a bit of help from Dad) but the timing belt has never been changed and I think that'll have to be left to the experts. -
Extended Services/Tuning Boxes 1 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Thankfully I was fortunate to buy my turbo diesel from new, but I would`nt touch one second hand without documentary evidence of oil changes at 8k max.!!!
