Any - Advice needed to buy first car in the UK 2 Jan 2016 (Forum)
I am looking for a cheap to run car, I do care about the size and look of the car as well, so basically I am not interested in very small cars like old ford fiesta or yaris. Mpg is important for me as well as other run costs and insurance. My budget is max £2k, the cars that I've found interesting are : Nissan Almera Nissan pixo Peugeot 207 VW polo Volvo s40 I need help and advice to select a car, as my knowledge is not enough and I am confused, I don't know if a diesel one would be good for me as I will travel at least twice a week. -
CopperEase - What is aluminium grease used for? 9 Jun 2014 (Forum)
However, I THINK I've seen it claimed that this doesn't matter, and that what is important is that there is a non-drying barrier between the two components, to prevent fusing and galling. IF copper encouraged some surface corrosion, this too would act as a barrier. I dunno, but aluminium grease sounds a bit safer for alloy interfaces. -
Need reliable, smooth-riding, auto mimser-killer. 1 Sep 2013 (Forum)
The paragon I seek must be reliable; offer a supple ride; and be widely available secondhand. I'd prefer a diesel; but really what is more important is that it be an unruffled, relaxed, rapid overtaker. (I took the trip yesterday in a luvverly 'classic' Saab 900 turbo automatic. That was nice. But 12 years' experience of their non-turbos means that, hand on heart, I can't exactly call them 'reliable'.) -
Arround School Zones Keep Driving Safe 2 Mar 2012 (Forum)
Talking and texting on the cell phone while driving should be strictly prohibited. Any type of earphones should not be used while driving. A very simple and important safety driving tip is to remember to pay full attention. Many accidents occur due to driver inattention and carelessness like applying makeup, changing the radio station and focusing on other things rather than vehicles and pedestrians in the area. -
Best reliable and economical car for £2000-3000 29 Jan 2012 (Forum)
VW Golf tdi (90 or 110 as I have heard the higher bhp PD models can be unreliable) is this a good idea or is there anything better out there the most important thing to me is reliability and economy a close second. From what I have read its best to stay away from the newer tdci, cdti, hdi etc... and stick the the old simple diesels, is this true? Also contemplating an LPG are these any and whats the best to go for? -
Nissan Serena - Advice needed please - replacing & upgrading 29 Nov 2011 (Forum)
My budget cannot go past 2k unfortunately. The NS was thristy and noisy but a real workhorse (an import so also pain in the butt to replace parts). Obviously I need to think of the following:- Fuel consumption (I do many miles up and down the country) Space Seating (would be great to seat another 2 passengers, maybe even 4! -
Tips for Defensive Driving 19 Jul 2011 (Forum)
Each speed increase lowers down the ability to react in time of hazards because one may be covering more distance in less time than it takes. This is a very important step at night because darkening restricts one’s ability. A true defensive driver will choose a speed that would match traffic as close as possible without exceeding the limits of speed. Making these tips in mind while driving would ensure and give one a safety ride and would thus prevent accidents. -
Toyota Yaris - Toyota hot starting problem 21 Feb 2011 (Forum)
I wonder if anyone can help? My car is a Toyota Will Vi, a Japanese import with Yaris mechanicals. It has the 2NZFE 1.3L VVTi engine. When it's cold, it will start every time with a few churns of the starter. When the engine is hot, eg I drive somewhere, leave it half an hour and come back, it almost invariably will not start first time. -
Volkswagen Beetle - VW Beetle 1.6 (2003) ESP Light on 11 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Turns out I had a hose which had got a hole in it, so yesterday got the hose and my normal mechanic replaced it ( decided it was more important to have my car than to take it to have it done under warranty). So this morning went to Tesco, and the ESP light comes on. I am starting to wonder if I have brought a lemon ( although I haven't had any problems for 11 months) Does anyone have any ideas what could cause this? -
Corporate image and a cherished registration 6 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Net result, drivers of cars from that manufacturer even at a corporate level can appear to conform to their apparent stereotype.... (and I drive one of their excellent machines too). Or perhaps the boss was late for an important meeting ? Perhaps better to go for a low key standard reg if you're going to drive "ostentatiously" ? -

Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 99 1.6 Central locking issue 15 Aug 2009 (Forum)
I'm not *that* bothered, as it's a 10 year old car I'm learning in, so central locking isn't really important for learning to drive... but it's a niggle that if it can be easily or cheaply fixed, I'd like to resolve. Thanks in advance. -
Volvo V70 (2007 - ) - Which £18,000 family estate car? 22 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Has anyone been through the same buying process recently and have any views on the Volvo or the alternatives? We don't tend to change cars that often, so running costs are more important than depreciation. -
Learner driver - must it be ins. group 1 only? 9 Jul 2009 (Forum)
My missus's old Saab is on its last legs - big repairs likely to come up in the next 6 months, and because my son's now 17 and we want him to learn to drive, we're thinking of the scrappage and getting a new small-engined runabout, rather than a more direct replacement for the saab. My question is this: how important is the insurance group in the decision of which car to get? Obviously we're not going to get something in, say, Group 10, but does it make a big big difference in insurance premium if we got a Gp 4 car as against a Gp 1, where the choice is really thin? -
Subaru Forester II (2002 - ) - Forester tyres 10 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Any suggestions for a cheaper major brand tyre when other replacements will be required in about 5000 miles? Also, how important is it to replace all tyres at the same time as suggested in the manual and is it acceptable to have one brand at the front with another of the same size and rating on the rear? At present I have two almost new tyres on the front wheels and part worne on the rear. -
Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 06 1.6 Advice please on buying car ? 27 May 2009 (Forum)
It appears at this stage that the car did not undergo any service last year (in 08) so you can't really say it has a "full service history." I am worried about parting with my money with this knowledge as oil and filter changes are so important. -
Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 1992 1800 Questions timing belt change Golf AAM 25 Feb 2009 (Forum)
On my engine the belt loops round the crankshaft, camshaft, passes the circular tensioner and also drives the auxilliary shaft. I think the auxilliary shaft drives the distributor so its timing is important. Off the cranksaft are some vee belts which drive the power steering pump, alternator and water pump. The water pump is not driven off the timing belt. Do i need to remove the crankshaft pullys in order to remove the lower timing belt covers to get at the belt? -
Happy New Year from New Zealand 30 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Local past-time seems to be running over possums at night... Good news is... diesel at 45p/litre and petrol around 60p, and this in a country which has to import all its oil! And more amazingly, the pump prices have fallen by around 45% since the summer oil peak! How much have our UK prices gone down by? 10-15% tops? What a con! Makes you realise just how much $$$ our darling UK Government makes off us at the pumps! -
Winning an argument over speed cameras 25 Dec 2008 (Forum)
His air of superciliousness and self-satisfied smirk were annoying to say the least. Think of Norris in Corrie or maybe a self-important traffic warden. He really wound me up. He won't do it again though because I killed him. -
I have started to cycle 1 Sep 2008 (Forum)
(Thread headline changed so Backroomers know what it's about without having to enter the thread) Much as I loath it, I have started to cycle places - Im taking my car for a service/MOT later and im cycling the 5 miles home. I can see it will become increasingly important to be 'bike fit' now ( which Im not ) so im biting the bullet early and getting into shape so I can stop using the car. I used to be able to cycle 40 miles 8 years ago but have since lost the fitness.
