Which breakdown recovery service do you recommend these days? 6 Dec 2010 (Ask HJ)
I just had my AA renewal through and at £273 I think it’s a bit much (Roadside; Home start; Relay; breakdown repair cover). Who do you recommend these... -
What happens to the fuel in the tank of my Ford Mondeo which is being scrapped? 23 Jun 2010 (Ask HJ)
The clutch went on our Ford Mondeo today and we were towed back to our local garage. The quote for replacement was more than the car is worth, so we have... -
That simmering feeling 13 Feb 2010 (Ask HJ)
I take your advice about allowing turbo diesels to 'simmer' before turning off. But for how long after what kind of driving? Also if it is an important... -

What is the technical reason for suggesting that turbos are allowed to idle for a couple of minutes before switch-off, and does this apply only after a... -
Trailer regs puzzle 15 Dec 2009 (Forum)
He says - and I can't see any advantage for him in saying this - that if I buy a trailer weighing 600kg itself but plated to carry 2500kg I cannot drive the 600kg empty trailer home unless I have a vehicle rated for the full 2500kg rather than the 1500kg-rated car I had in mind for the trip home. This was news to me since I had always assumed it was the actual weight being towed that counted and not the potential weight the trailer could carry. I had ultimately thought to tow a trailer and light car having a combined weight of about 1300kg but the most suitable trailer is plated at 2500kg which means only a limited number of 4x4s could be used legally. -
Volkswagen Polo III (1994 - 1999) - 95 1.0 Engine not firing up 26 Aug 2009 (Forum)
It started up again not long after, no harm done we thought. Well last night it cut out again and refused to start, it had to be towed home. A friend who knows a fair bit came to have a look before I towed it and seems to think it's the immobiliser or key transponder. I'm not convinced, especially after googling around, because of the symptoms, such as the engine turns and turns but won't start at all (not the "classic" firing up, then cutting out). -
Oars chestnut 20 Jun 2009 (Ask HJ)
What should I buy? I need enough room for a pair of oars and outboard engine. Good fuel economy. Ability to tow 2 laser dinghies. Lowish road tax. Cruise... -
Fusion feud 16 May 2009 (Ask HJ)
I have a 2007 Ford Fusion 1.6 TDCi Zetec. I am quite pleased with the car, particularly the fuel economy, (around 60 mpg at the moment) and the car has... -
Blue badge abuse. Some serious action. BBC item 18 Sep 2008 (Forum)
However, people had also been caught using fraudulent badges. Currently, wardens only have the powers to tow away the offending vehicles and to issue a fine of £140. However, the city council said it would now start using private prosecutions to bring people to court, which would allow them to impose higher fines and leave the drivers with a criminal record. -
Ford Galaxy (1995 - 2006) - '05 1.9TD. Tyre speed ratings - mix or not to mix? 2 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Our 2005 1.9 Diesel Galaxy was hit at low speed by a motorcylist who was cut up while attempting to switch lanes in slow moving traffic on the M1 last weekend. He managed to lay the bike down and slid under our tow bar which seems to have taken most of the impact. Two questions for the experts out there please: where are we best taking the car to for an inspection to ascertain whether or not there has been any hidden damage to the chassis, tow bar, running gear etc? -
Car has vanished into thin air! 29 Jul 2007 (Forum)
So anyway, last week it finally died and broke down in rather spectacular fashion - lots of smoke and oil pouring out of the engine. This was on Thursday, my dad doesn't have any breakdown cover so on Saturday we went to tow it home. However, when we arrived at the spot where it had been left - it wasn't there! So far we have contacted, Trace, the local council and the police - it's nowhere to be found and the police think it was probably stolen. -
Citroen Dispatch HDi under fueling?? 23 Jun 2006 (Forum)
It feels very down on power compared to 1.9TD models, after adding injector cleaner, or on a long run (often towing) it can get better (will hold 70mph uphill rather than slowing to 55 when towing 1300kg trailer/car combo). Virtually no visible smoke, starts first time every time. Sounds like a bag of nails sometimes until about 3000rpm. -
Espace 2.2 dCi Won't start 6 Apr 2006 (Forum)
The garage I normally use (not a dealer) couldn't get any fault codes on his diagnostic equipment so resorted to towing it to Renault Dealer. They spent a dya on it - no fault codes found - but said at the end there was petrol in , instead of diesel - and charged for that diagnosis. My gargage towed the car back to their place, drained the system and found only diesel in it. -

Arrrgggghhhhh more problems with my A4! 6 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Panic phonecall from the wife at 3pm today - the car made a noise, the power steering went and there was some smoke... I race into town from work (Thanks boss!) with a few tools and a tow rope. I get into the local hospital road network and find the car parked, neatly blocking the road. Still, it was chock-a-block with nose to tail traffic so no real harm done. Lift the bonnet and my suspiscions are confirmed. -
Renault Safrane 2.2 What to do? 11 Apr 2003 (Forum)
An independent garage suggested that the head/engine should have been condemned and the vehicle was towed to the original garage, who denied responsibility. A short and unsuccessful attempt at legal action occurred and the situation is now this: I owe the garage 600 quid for work on the car + storage. -
Is my story of the write-off of my damaged Mondeo indicative of today's insurance repair and accident management industry? 16 Jun 2011 (Ask HJ)
I was recently hit on the rear nearside wheel of my Ford Mondeo. I notified my insurer, Lloyds TSB, who instructed me to contact Green Flag. The tow truck... -
2 Fines for Continuous Offence 18 May 2023 (Forum)
On 10/03/2023 my car was clamped and early the next morning before I could pay the penalty it was towed away. I paid for it to be released from the pound, and the gentleman who towed it took it off my hands. I received a letter dated 22/03/2023 with an out of court settlement payment offer of £85 for the offence of keeping an unlicensed vehicle, citing the date of 08/02/2023 when my car had been spotted in violation of the law parked where it was. -
Help me pick my very first car? 22 Oct 2018 (Forum)
, It will also be used for me to get to work everyday which is 60 miles in a day as my workplace is 30 miles away from home so 30 to work 30 back so that 300 miles a week and on route there's a lot of motorway driving involved as well as contry roads. We also have tow beautiful dogs that need to be considered too a German shepherd and a golden retriever so the car needs to be able to fit tow large dogs three adults and one small child plus suitcases when we go on hoilday. -
