  • n/a - Overtaking over solid white lines in France. 12 Sep 2019 (Forum)
Having done the pedestrians - v - motorists - v - cyclists subject to death on another thread I thought it worth a reminder to those who venture into or across France. Firstly, the rule in the UK is that it is permissible to cross or straddle a solid white line to overtake a slow moving vehicle travelling at 10 mph or less. Forget that rule in France - it's different, and being France, it's complicated!
  • Hyundai ix35 - Changing dipping direction of headlights 13 Aug 2011 (Forum)
A friend is moving back to UK from his current home here in France. He has a 6-month old Hyundai ix35, bought in France, which is going to UK. Can he change the headlamp dipping direction to suit UK or does he need new headlights?
  • Driving in France - adjusting headlights 6 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Unlike the old model, there doesn't seem to be a way to adjust the headlights on my BMW 5 series (e60) for driving on the rhs. I seem to recall reading...
  • Cross border hire car 25 Jun 2004 (Forum)
For reasons I can't quite understand the friends who have booked our joint holiday villa in France have booked us to fly into Barcelona so we'll have a Spanish hire car for the 2 weeks in France. Anyone know for sure if there's any problems with that? If so, what are the solutions? As always thanks for advice
  • Can I still use Uk licence in Uk with foreign car 24 Aug 2013 (Forum)
As a UK national now  resident in France  I may be worrying needlessly but I DO know my Uk driving licence is valid to drive in France without having to exchange it (EU Directive) (presumably until it is due to run out when I have to renew in france) and I also know that it is illegal for a UK residen t to drive a foreign car on UK roads(with few exceptions) I am worried by the fact that though I am not resident in Uk now but have a UK licence still that this MAY cause me  aggro with Uk police if stopped during a visit - since it might appear that I am a resident because of my UK licence.
  • The Big Simple Load Lugger for France 10 Nov 2010 (Forum)
We go back and forwards to France quite a lot. Usually once a month for a few days. We take stuff there and back and can usually fill a good size estate car. We have a SAAB 95 2.2tid at the moment which serves quite well, and it has a proper spare wheel to avoid silly happenings with the space-saver on the wrong side of the Channel.

  • Left hand drive cars 4 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Hi I live in France and need to buy a new car (hence Left Hand Drive). Someone at ( 8< SNIP ) suggested your site, I hope you can help me. Apparently it can now be cheaper for someone in France to come to the UK, buy a LHD car, take it back to France and reregister it.
  • Filling Up in France 12 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Follow up to a point raised in Huw’s Boulogne thread. Returned last week from holiday in France where we found it becoming difficult to access supermarket fuel. Around Gex (Ain) neither Carrefour nor Intermarche any longer have a cashier. All pumps are card only 24/7. No doubt the same in other areas, particularly away from the main tourist centres.
  • ALL radar warning devices - now illegal in France! 7 Feb 2012 (Forum)
I've just updated my TomTom maps and an alert flashed up that all devices that warn of (fixed or mobile) speed traps in France are now illegal, as of 1st January 2012. TomTom suggests removing all SatNav radar warnings for France and will not update this information in future, but offers to provide warning of "danger zones" if possible in the future (some would argue that the whole country is a "danger zone"!)
  • Buying a UK car exporting it then importing it! 28 Jun 2008 (Forum)
It would be insured in France by them but I'd have to get it down to SW France. Parents are in their 70's.

  • French MOT 3 Apr 2003 (Forum)
It's a long shot I know! But does anyone have any knowledge, experience of getting an MOT (control Technique) in France? I am about to ask for one for my 1995 VW Passat, which is imported into France. Any ideas as to strictness, EU laws concerning general MOT standards pan Europe etc etc.... many thanks (i know this is an awkward one) MG
  • Audi A3 Cabriolet - Audi A3 engine failure 6 Apr 2016 (Forum)
Audi London advised me they would perform a free oil consumption test, but we agreed this should happen after i return back from my journey to france given the likelyhood of the reapparance of the warning light. To cut to the chase, my car experienced catastrophic engine problems on a motorway in France. Audi France advised there was no pressure in the cylinders and the engine would require replacing.
  • Any - Moving back to the UK 5 Apr 2013 (Forum)
This had to be in English, on a UK insurers headed paper, and show the number of years of no-claims bonus I'd earned. The problem is that in France I'm insured by AXA (who refuse to insure me in the UK) and even AXA in France won't translate my no-claims bonus into English, transfer the percentage bonus (called the 'malus, which is the standard way of expressing no-claims bonuses in France) into the number of years, and obviously wouldn't put all that on AXA UK headed paper in any case.
  • Citroen C5 (2001 - 2008) - warranty claim in England for breakdown in France. 22 May 2009 (Forum)
A short time ago went to leave cottage in France and car would not start, seemed like flat battery, tried to jump it with portable battery pack but no joy. Eventually had to call out breakdown service. They put new battery in car and it started, but, as the car is less than two years old we got a tow to a Citroen garage.
  • Cost of cars in France 17 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Just come back from my first (proper) holiday in France and as mentioned in an earlier thread was amazed at the superb quality of the roads, courteous drivers, lack of traffic...all in all a great driving experience. But the reason for this post was my surprise at the high cost of secondhand cars in France.
