The article is a bit out of date in that you no longer have to wait for the sticker to show up, once the application has been approved they email you a PDF you can print which acts as a temporary sticker.

Yup - I registered my Swace last July for Crit-air and received the sticker in the post and an invoice with a copy of it to show before it arrived. I've not been abroad yet due to health reasons and won't affix to the windscreen until I need to - tempting fate re potential cracked windscreen!! I also have the German emissions sticker in waiting.

The French government machine is slowly grinding towards getting rid of the ZFE's and the Critair sticker.

The reason given is that it discriminates against the owners of older vehicles on a low income, who cannot afford to replace the vehicle with one of a better emissions performance.

This anomaly occurs at the times of high pollution when the older vehicles cannot enter the zone.

The sticker is still necessary until the final decision.

I had to learn how to spell out my own surname letter by letter using the French pronunciation, it's not anything like doing it in English !!

It got a lot easier when we got permanent residency granted in 2016 and can now just show our Cartes de Sejour.

One more step along the road to getting rid of the ZFE's and the CritAir sticker.

The French National Assembly has voted in favour of a proposal to sc*** the country's Low Emission Zones (Zones à Faibles Émissions or ZFEs), which currently restrict access to certain city areas for older, more polluting vehicles based on their Crit’Air rating.

However, despite the vote, the process isn’t over. The bill now heads to a joint parliamentary committee, where seven senators and seven MPs will attempt to reconcile different versions of the text. Notably, the version previously passed by the Senate doesn’t mention ZFEs at all, meaning the amendment could still be removed before becoming law.

So keep your CritAir sticker for now.
