A short time ago went to leave cottage in France and car would not start, seemed like flat battery, tried to jump it with portable battery pack but no joy. Pesky breakdown cover 25 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Hi there, My car has just passed its 16th birthday and is no longer allowed breakdown cover with my current provider - I rang them up: they said, up to 15 years was fine, I said, it's sixteen years so I'll have to cancel then they said, in the uk it doesn't matter, it can be 40 years old, we thought you meant Europe I said, it doesn't make any distinction in the policy doc? -

Read the car by car breakdown and completely scared off by the what's bad section, it went on forever. Anything you can do put my mind at rest, or agree with the breakdown? Thanks -

The time has come for renewing my Breakdown cover, and shell out some quid for another years worth of breakdown cover. Between the three mentioned above, apparently there is one which gives you additional benefits while in the US/Europe i.e discounts with other purchases eg car hire etc. -
Honest John Website 8 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Only just discovered this, and I like it. However, on the left hand side of this page the choice of wording "Car-by-Car Breakdown" could be considered rather unfortunate. Regards Myfyr -
Most Underpowered 22 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Hi, what is the most underpowered car that any of you have heard of or come across. I heard something about the Saab 9000 being bad but the car - by - car - breakdown doesn't point that out. -

A friend of mine has just bought a 1970 Triumph Rochdale 1.5. It appears to be in very good nick. Does anyone know of any major things to be aware of on this car as it isn't on the car by car breakdown. -

Recovery after an accident 2 Feb 2006 (Forum)
('local recovery' underlined) So if I live in Lancashire, and am involved in an RTA, say, in the midlands as I am drivng home, they wouldn't take me or the car home. I would have to pay ££££ to some recovery firm to do this. But yet if the gearbox went BANG!, then the AA would relay me & the car home. Is this now the case for all the other breakdown services (assuming one had the equivalent of Relay )? -

Isuzu Diesel 11 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Hello a good condition 1.5 turbo diesel nova caught my eye and i'm fairly interested. The only thing that concerns me is in honest john car by car breakdown it says that the combined alternator brake vacuum pump is very expensive if it fails, £600 to replace! Just curious to whether this is something that does fail often and is it DIYable? -
N/A - Breakdown Recovery honest opinion 13 May 2025 (Forum)
I usually by Via Quidco and get pretty good deals and some decent cashback. In rencent times though Ive had breakdown via My Halifax bank account, including Roadside and Homestart but not recovery, I had to pay extra direct to AA for that. I used to haggle a little and get it for around £50 ayear, its now gone up to just £100 a year even though never used. -
Extended Warranties _ are they worth it? 21 May 2008 (Forum)
Today MAZDA offered me an extended warranty on my Mazda 6 auto estate. To extend cover for 24 months (ie to the car's 5th birthday) is £578. This includes breakdown cover. Is it worth it? If I don't take it out, I will still spend £200 approximately on breakdown cover over two years. So far (touch wood) nothing has gone wrong with the Mazda, except for flaky paint on all four alloys which they replaced without murmur. -
Broken down, but "No Parking" 18 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Seeing someone broken down and waiting on double yellow lines for the breakdown man made me wonder what the legal position might be in similar circumstances. Suppose you are driving along next to an active bus-lane, when your car cuts out or suffers a flat tyre. Do you: a) stop in the middle of the road and call the breakdown service b) ditto, but attempt a repair or change the wheel c) pull over into the bus lane and block it while awaiting assistance or changing the wheel d) drive (if possible) on a flat tyre until you find somewhere you can park legally? -
