  • Toyota - VVTi engines & Oil consumption 12 Dec 2008 (Forum)
From what I can make out there are 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0i versions, and in the avensis a rare 2.4 also Are these all essentailly the same engine design with just a change in stroke/bore ? (My celica and corolla engines look extremely similar) From what I can see they sound good engines - chain driven, with some (all ??) direct petrol injection. If they are affected by oil-consumption does this mean the cat/lambda sensor are also at risk of premature failure due to the oil burning ?
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 08 1.8 Petrol oil and filter advice please 12 Jan 2008 (Forum)
On the Ford Service blurb provided it says first service in 12.5K miles OR a year , now as I tend now to do 5K miles a year only, and have a lot of short journeys ie 4 miles to work and 4 miles home - can I ask OK to adhere to the Ford Advice ? Or should I have oil changed more often, if so does that mean filter as well each 'extra' time? Plus just how easy is it to access the oil filter on this model ? Last one - is the Fords own oil a synthetic or what cos some one told me syntehetics are for new design engines only and my engine is one that has been around for sometime now.
  • Toyota Yaris 2003 - Servicing 5 Dec 2006 (Forum)
ve just taken my dads Yaris 1.0 (54 plate) to have its 2 year service. Its only done 10k miles. The service book states that the oil/filter need changing, and that the brake fluid should be changed every 2 years (i.e. now). Speaking to the service manager at the approved Toyota service centre, he said that as the mileage is so low, he will check the brake fluid and not change it if its ok.

Obviously, how well it is made will be one factor, and luck may be another - but what about such things as driving style, frequency of oil changes, etc?
  • Every 3,000 miles 28 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Clean and re-oil air cleaner. Add a few drops of thin engine oil to opening round distributor rotating arm. Check dynamo-belt tension and adjust if necessary. Smear contact-breaker rocker-arm pivot with engine oil or grease.
  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 02 1.9 130 BHP - White(ish) smoke. 3 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Compression test shows correct values. I also done an oil change with an engine flush product used, followed by oil filter change. One test that was conducted by hte garage was they removed the oil cap, when I placed my hand over the hole I could feel hot air coming out in waves with some pressure - the garage tell me that this is a breathing problem but didn't elaborate.

  • Micra 3 door K11 5800 mls -- how much? 29 May 2006 (Forum)
I have an October 2001 Micra that has done less that 6k miles. Well maintained, such as is needed for such low milage -- oil changed, antifreeze changed at 3 years, brake fluid at 2 years. Have to look very hard to see any blemish. What is a realistic price to ask for it in a weekly rag? -- No side tracking please as to the sense of the low use.

Just how much teneder loving care should a car need? My 1995 Passat needs its service soon and i was wondering if it might be worth changing the main fluids (break, clutch, PAS, engine oil) all at once as some of these have not been changed in a while? Will over-service be of any real good, is it worth considering other small service points anually or every 5-10 thousand miles.

  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 96 1.8D Sump plug 26 Sep 2009 (Forum)
While doing an oil change I lost the nylon sump plug washer. Put the plug back without the washer, no leaks at the moment. How important is this?
  • Long service intervals on way out? 5 Apr 2006 (Forum)
I notice that the new Euro 4 compliant Laguna 2.0 dCi has a service interval every 9K instead of 18K. Is this to service the particulate filter and/or change the oil? Does anyone know?

Anyone out there know where you can get those valves that replace the sump plug to make oil change easier? I know aeroquip make them for small plane engines, but can't find any for cars.
