Yesterday, all my troubles ... 30 Mar 2002 (Forum)
I see that Halfords still have them on sale but wonder if, in this age of electronic geewhizzery, they are worth the outlay? Also at that time, when I still had lead in my pencil, there was a monthly mag called Motor Sport. It had a green cover. Despite the title it had quite a bit of off-track coverage, e.g. it was a good source of adverts for veteran/vintage/ PVT cars. -
Diesels in the US 14 Mar 2002 (Forum)
One of the more interesting events was a debate about trying to convert Americans to the idea of driving diesels. The govt regulators there are very keen that diesel take up increases and Ford seem to be leading the efforts to educate. (except in California where they don't want to know apparently). Why does Europe have such a high proportion of diesels? Is it all to do with fuel costs do you think? (A conference note: The (ex-Jaguar MD) new top Ford guy Nick Scheele was an excellent speaker and comes across as very credible. -
Audi 80 stopped! 11 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Well, I put the cat out, put the lid on the cooking and went to investigate. A quick check with a key stuffed up a plug lead showed no spark. The engine turns over beautifully and (paranoia in charge) I even prised over the cam belt cover and *yes!* it's still there! Fuel seems to be there (singed hair). This car has a distributor on cam 1 and a rotor arm, from a mini coil (I've never seen one so small - perhaps they should contact family planning). -
good help wanted about a BX. (maybe DW can help) 16 Feb 2002 (Forum)
my mother is selling her citroen bx, and i was wondering how much she should charge, its a 1987 E, 16TRS, metallic silver, 111,000 miles, some history, automatic, long tax and test, and has had in the past 6 months - rear spheres, new battery, alternator, HT leads, plugs, full service, ignition coil, starter motor, ignition lock, and in the past year has had tons more done (including the timing belt), the interior is in mint condition, very slight rust on one of the rear doors, but no other rust, she was thinking about £325, but put it up for £450. -
The Fast And The Furious 15 Feb 2002 (Forum)
If you're stuck inside this weekend and don't fancy any of the dross on the telly, I recommend you nip out and rent this on DVD or Video. It's set in California, the lead is played by Vin Diesel, it's shot like a video game and the cars are something else. Tricked up RX7s, Integras, Supras (Tomo), Skylines, Civic Coupes and lots more including (curiously) a Vento VR6. -
Help! Gottaprob! 21 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Being a trusting fool I believed that, and sprayed a small area, only to find that it DID, and area now looks far worse than it did before. It transpires that the reason the ingredient wasn't in stock was that it's lead based. Shop is now trying to get colour made up elsewhere but so far without success. In this colour Honda dealers only sell those tiny touchup 'mascara brushes'. Short of having a proper spray job done (£££) how, please, can I get myself out of this hole I've dug for myself? -
Volvo Tyre Tolerances 22 Feb 2001 (Forum)
Basically it stated that not only should each tyre be the same size, manufacturer and tread pattern but also that the tread depth of each tyre should be within 2mm of each other. Therefore the rolling circumference of each wheel would be the same.Failure to adhere to this could lead to transmission failure. I can see the logic that different circumferences would mean that each wheel would be rotating at a different speed thus maybe putting a strain on the transmission but what makes the transmission system in volvos that sensitive to this and do such fine tolerances apply to any other cars? -
Honda Accord 2.0 SE Vtec (1999) (auto) - Engine Management light issues 12 Jul 2011 (Forum)
Went to garage and typically light went off before I got there!! However, diagnostics showed engine misfire, he checked connections etc and had a look at leads/plugs and they were fine, but thought it could simply be because it had been sat for a while, and did say it was a good tidy car. Take it away, drive for a bit, if light comes back on, bring it back. -
Two Linux installations - Windows and Symbian S60 31 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Will Linux ever take over from Windows, given that Linux is free and an `open` operating system? Here`s where Symbian S60, one of the worlds leading smartphone operating systems comes into play. Symbian is now open source too, similar to Linux in that aspect, but still needing Windows in certain situations. Nokia`s PC suite (for example) just won`t run on Linux and you need a Windows box to download the several Gigs of the Ovi maps to the phone. -
Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - 01 1.8 Running very rough - electrical issue? 22 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I kill the air con and heated screen etc. I really suspect it's something electrical. I've bought HT leads but not yet fitted them due to only ever remembering mid journey. When it's really stuttering, it interferes with the radio, again leading me to believe it's an electrical fault or a short somewhere. -
Renault Clio 1 Petrol (1991 - 1998) - 94 1.4 Emissions Test Failure Causes 19 Oct 2009 (Forum)
If anyone has any suggestions i would be glad to hear them. I suppose changing the distrubutor cap and sticking some new plug leads on wont hurt. Any questions, feel free to ask. -
Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - '97 1.8 Seatbelt pretensioner wiring- Airbag light 3 Jul 2008 (Forum)
The wiring which pokes through the carpet is only long enough to reach halfway across the underside of the seat base so I assume the yellow connector lead has been removed. The 4 wires which hang loose are as follows: Inside a yellow sheath: Purple / orange tracer. -

Indicating when leaving a motorway 21 Aug 2025 (Forum)
All I can find in the Highway Code is the following: "Rule 273 Unless signs indicate that a lane leads directly off the motorway, you will normally leave the motorway by a slip road on your left. You should watch for the signs letting you know you are getting near your exit move into the left-hand lane well before reaching your exit signal left in good time and reduce your speed on the slip road as necessary." -
VW Golf Mk8 - CarPlay: Golf mk8 and iPhone 7 27 Apr 2025 (Forum)
The car and the phone see each other via wi-fi but CarPlay doesn't recognize the iPhone as a device it can access. We went to the local Apple store and bought an expensive connector lead. That didn't work either. It may be that the iPhone is just too old. If so, we'll buy a new one. But nothing I've read in the Apple literature suggests that this will be necessary. Am I missing some small piece of setup somewhere? -
Any - How long does an exhaust pipe last? 7 Oct 2023 (Forum)
Are exhausts just made from more durable metal now, or do more stringent emissions regulations and the phasing out of leaded petrol mean that the gases passing through the exhaust are less corrosive? -
New car advice - downsizing 6 Feb 2023 (Forum)
Higher spec models would be more desirable, and I recognise that certain brands have extremely long lead times. Shortlist at present is, (and in no particular order) 208, Clio, Fiesta, Ibiza. Any thoughts much appreciated. -
Vauxhall Frontera sports - Alarm immobilizer thatcham vauxhall Frontera sport 20 Apr 2020 (Forum)
I have to keep unlocking and relocking drivers door and wait and try again until it starts. Failing that I disconnect one lead and try again, then the other. Sometimes both and leave it sitting for some time. Then it starts or it doesn't. I go back to relocking doors to unlocking and keep repeating process until it starts. -
Land Rover Discovery 3 TDi - Discovery ice problem 15 Apr 2020 (Forum)
Left idling for 2 hours and engine heat melted ice and all OK. Q. Why on earth do LR rely on air bubbling through water, in the pipe leading up to the manifold, to dry. Cure. Either suck air in from inside the engine compartment instead of the side of a front wing OR fit a solenoid operated drain valve where water collect, open when the ignition is off.
