  • Battery Life 14 Jan 2002 (Forum)
What is the life expectance of car batteries these days?, used to be 3 - 4 years but have battery manufacturers made advances. The reason I ask is that I am spending some weeks driving around Europe in the spring, my car is 4 years old (diesel), and the local tyre depot is having a battery sale on now.
  • Warranty & its distortion of car values 31 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Therefore 3-year old prices are slightly depressed, relative to a straight line (or more likely a pure log curve), so it is a popular age at which to buy a second hand car. Owner two has therefore an expensive car for half price, and can be all smug about depreciation, yet has to suffer the risk of premature bottom end failure/new gearbox etc.
  • 40 year old first time driver! 28 Nov 2024 (Forum)
We have a 3 year old, hoping to have another baby within the next year (but obviously no guarantees on that one!). So need a reasonable size.  I've been recommended compact SUV's and larger cars but a bit nervous about going straight from driving the Yaris I learnt in, to this.

  • New Ford or old Honda 22 Mar 2007 (Forum)

  • Impressions we have of our cars 19 Jun 2023 (Forum)
Nobody ever gives much credit to Fords on here except perhaps for the odd old Focus and the 1.25 Fiesta.  Ford over the years have produced some really great cars both family and performance wise.  Indeed Elaine Robinson may have been conceived in the back of a FORD much to Benjamin Braddock's amusement!
  • Any - Speedometer dial calibration 14 Mar 2013 (Forum)
Just got a new car and the speedometer dial is ONLY calibrated in MPH. I cannot remember being in any UK car less than 40 years old that did not have secondary KPH calibration inside the MPH markings as well. I thought this was a requirement in UK cars, is this an urban myth or has legislation changed recently?
  • Items that should be included with a car purchase 7 Nov 2011 (Forum)
Hi, We have recently purchased a 1 year old bmw 1 series from a dealership . Having checked the boot etc we realise that the locking wheel nut key is missing. The dealership have basically said   'tough - it is a second hand car'.
  • Recommend a £750 car for my daughter. 2 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Some thoughts, folks, for a cheap (up to £750 ish) , preferably 4 or 5 doors, car for a newly single daughter with two children - 4 & 1.5 yrs old. Cheap to run, insure & tax. Use mostly taking children to school, going to work & local shopping. -- Roger. (Costa del Sol, España)
  • Diesel auto family car 14 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Can anyone recommend a good diesel auto family car 2 to 3 years old for about 10k ? We fancied the scenic & love the diesel 1.9 engine, but they only do an auto in the petrol, which was horrible. The Touran was smart & nice in the 2.0 TDi DSG but they cost a fortune.

  • Euro Car of the Year 19 Nov 2003 (Forum)
According to the London Evening Standard, Fiat have won this more times than anyone else. Says it all really...... I don't know much about the new Panda (or the old one), but last year's (?) award to the 307 was pretty daft. It's an OK car, but not the best in its class and arguably not as good as the now-quite-elderly Focus!
  • Recycled cars 20 Jan 2003 (Forum)
"If the government stopped issuing new private vehicle registrations two things would happen. One, the number of cars on the road would effectively be frozen. Two, today's worthless wrecks would have a market value, since a new vehicle could only be registered by turning in an old one."
  • Nissan Sentra - Most characterless car... 1 May 2018 (Forum)
Just back from holiday. Booked a mid-range hire car and ended up with a 2-month-old Nissan Sentra. Worked perfectly and comfortable too; drove nearly 2000 USA miles in two weeks, absolutely no complaints. But the car had no character or style whatsoever.
  • any - Top 10 family cars built in Britain 18 Jan 2015 (Forum)
Interesting selection of cars still built here (as listed on the home page feature). No place for Jazz (runout model), Avensis, CRV, Juke, Note, Leaf.etc. However room for 2 Jags and in at number ten is that good old family car stalwart the Rolls Royce Ghost. £200k family car anyone?
  • Who killed the British car industry? 25 May 2009 (Forum)
An old topic, perhaps, but it would be interesting to hear backroomers theories on why this country has no home grown car industry to speak of, despite such having such an illustrious history in car manufacturing.
  • Jap imports 8 Oct 2023 (Forum)
The only concerns/questions remaining is regarding the cars themselves, does anyone know if theres any reason why it would be a bad idea to import these, I know years ago it was hard to insure due to the different build quality, but from my research the German cars beside the instrument measurements which can easily be changed, the cars are virtually the same but tend to be in way better condition, most of the cars I deal with are up to 4 years old so nothing old.
