  • BMW 320i E36 questions? 27 Apr 2005 (Forum)
    1. would a 1994/95 E36 320i have belt or chain cam drive? 2. If upgrading to 2.5/2.8, is everything except the ECU the same? 3. Will an E46 320/323/325/328 engine transplant easily? I'm trying to find out whether its worth buying a cheap 320i that needs a replacment engine. -- Neil T Mondeo Ghia TDCi 130 Estate, SEAT Toledo 20VT Sport, Various Montegos...
  • Idle problem with Rover 114 auto 23 Aug 2004 (Forum)
The problem is with the idle speed: it either ticks over too quickly, or not at all. I have changed the temp sensor to the ECU, but the fault\'s still there. Any one out there got any suggestions as to what it could be? All ideas are gratefully received. Many thanks Clown Doctor.
  • Jump starting 4 Aug 2004 (Forum)
In yesterday's Telegraph, HJ wrote the following in response to a question about jump starting: 'Connect the starter car's positive battery terminal to that of the stricken vehicle, then attach the former's negative terminal to a metal earthing point on the latter. Linking both cables battery to battery might cause ECU damage.' Does this rule apply to all modern cars? Is the positive/negative earth thing irrelevant now as all cars are the same? Is it still OK to attach battery charger leads directly to the battery terminals, or do similar rules as for jump starting apply?
  • Audi A4 tdi - problem or not??? 23 Jun 2004 (Forum)
When driving at a constant 1500ish rpm, the car will begin to kangaroo very badly (SWMBO accuses me of pumping the accelerator). I think that I might already have a MAF or ECU problem as very occasionally the car will not accelerate very well at all but this will clear itself when the engine is turned off and restarted. Any advice would be welcome as the car is under warranty for another month or so.
  • Tuning devices on Ebay 8 Aug 2003 (Forum)
The narrative states that these adjust the air/petrol ratio and slightly increases the timing. They were also easy to fit/remove and comparable to very much dearer ECU tuning. I assume these alter the signal from the air mass meter to enrich the mixture. Although these seem to be going for less than £10, are they worth it? Does anyone have any experience of these devices?
  • Airbag "Clock Spring" fault 24 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Car is a Seat Cordoba 1999 anyone had any experience of changing/repairing clock spring and if I do it myself will the ECU/Controller for airbag need reseting. I know that Practical Mechanics are doing an article on this very subject next month but this cuts it a bit fine for my MOT.
  • Punto 2001 ELX - engine cut out 4 Apr 2003 (Forum)
The car couldn't be restarted by the AA - the immobiliser wasn't accepting either key - and had to be towed to the nearest dealer and awaits a replacement ECU. Has anyone heard of this happening before? I had thought it wasimpossible for an immobilser to cut the engine when the car was going at speed. Can I trust the car not to do it again?
  • Cut out when starting 29 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I have changed all the plugs and leads but no improvement (I did not think it would improve as it did not misfire but I thought I would give it a try anyway). No engine light but could it be ECU problems or anything else? Thanks, Garrison
  • 306 tick over problems 26 Oct 2002 (Forum)
If you blip the throttle it revs fine, however as it returns to tick over it stalls. I have tried a ECU reset and there are no fault lights on the Dash. Any suggestions?
  • Golf GT TDi ABS Problem 25 Oct 2002 (Forum)
He will find out exactly what the problems are today, but does anyone know of any specific faults with this car and the ABS/ESR? HJ mentions a recall of Golf/Bora due to faulty ABS ECU - but doesn't say when these cars were made. Anyone?
  • micra cutting out 25 Feb 2002 (Forum)
I have read post regarding cold starts but my problem can occur at any time even when the engine is fully warm. The self-test on the ECU says every thing is fine any ideas?
  • Vauxhall Carlton 21 Jan 2002 (Forum)
I do manage to get it started but then it happens again. This problem has baffled the AA and various mechanics, who have suggested crankshaft sensor, ECU or even alternator. The AA even suggested the aerials at Heathrow !! ( I was at the car park that time ! ) Anybody experienced this before ? Help !!! Nick
  • Giving Up Smoking 6 Mar 2001 (Forum)
My one-year-old Focus tdi has always smoked heavily when accelerating and had a rather excessive thirst. I have been advised, by a producer of ECU chips, that there is a known problem with some Focus tdi's which has been traced to the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve, and that some dealers get around the problem by "simply disconnecting the pipe at the valve".
  • My Vauxhall Zafira is smoking after I changed the EGR valve - why? 11 Aug 2010 (Ask HJ)
I recently fitted a new EGR valve to my Vauxhall Zafira, but since I got it done the following happens. When starting there is occasionally white smoke,...
  • Renault Clio 1 Petrol (1991 - 1998) - 1997 1.2 high idle and rough 31 Dec 2008 (Forum)
When reseting the ECU it last for 5-10 minutes of driving before idleing too high. I took it to Renault to get a diagnostic check - no faults on the ECU but cos it was idleing high they disconnected the battery to reset it and that fixed it.
  • Corsa 1.0 Power Issues 25 Mar 2006 (Forum)
When i took it into the garage, he spent the best part of 45 mins messing around with his computer talking to the ecu and fiddling with the air flow sensor. He even done 3 road tests - one with me driving and him looking at live sensor readings. The only thing that came up was a small blip of a low voltage across the air flow meter.
  • Vauxhall Crossland X 2020 - Car Intermittently Not Starting 15 Dec 2023 (Forum)
Hello, I've had this intermittent problem with my Vauxhall Crossland X not starting at all. The starter motor has been changed and the ECU has been investigated and found to be fine. I checked the battery and it showed 12.47V. When attempting to turn the engine over, it just makes the door-lights for the windows turn off, and it requires a bump start to get it moving.
  • Alfa Romeo 159 TI 16V JTDM 150 Sportwagen 2009. - Battery charging / replacement procedure. 28 Jan 2021 (Forum)
Is it likely that disconnecting the battery for either of the above mentioned actions will cause any issues with the ECU or other electrical systems? Or is it better to parallel up a slave battery first. It’s my son’s car, an Alfa Romeo 159 TI 16V JTDM 150 Sportwagen. Thanks in advance for any recommendations. Regards Mo
