  • Devils advocate, fuel cell cars 8 Aug 2003 (Forum)
When we eventually all drive around with a fuel cell, what are the risks of explosion? Hydrogen is I remember from a botched chemistry experiment very very explosive. When all is working ok and all we have is a trickle of water out the exhaust, what will be the effects on an icy road.

  • Fuel Efficient Estate 8 Jul 2020 (Forum)
Reading through reviews I  know there are a lot of options and some of the more favourable reviews seem to lean towards a Skoda Superb, Skoda Octavia, BMW 3 Series Efficient Dynamics, VW Passat GTE or Seat Leon ST.   As stated, my main objective is to make it as fuel efficient a journey as possible as I'm currently running a 1L Ecoboost Fiesta which is costing me around £80-£100 a week on fuel depending on what other journeys happen during the week.  In the perfect world I would also enjoy something that is still slightly fun to drive but I realise this will have an effect on the fuel economy.
  • Fuel Card? Worth it!? 17 Nov 2015 (Forum)
Plus lets say you do 5000 business miles again at 50 mpg costs you £500 approx, BUT you claim back the 5000 business miles at 45p to get a cash back of £2250, making a grand total of -£750 VS. take a fuel card, and pay the BIK tax which is going to cost around £1800, making you over £1000 worse off?   (Or do you still need to log mileage if you take a fuel card)
  • FIAT SCUDO 1600 PETROL INJ (1997) - JERKY / ERRATIC ACCELLERATION 24 May 2014 (Forum)
In that when ever I start to accellerate it “Jerks” qite badly at times however once the vehicle gets up to a reasonable speed and I increase the speed slowly there is not a problem and the vehicle runs very smoothly. I have replaced the Air filter / fuel filter / plugs and the plug leads to no avail. I also had a diagnostic check done but it was not conclusive. I was told that it seemed there was a conflict between the Lamdar sensor and the fuel injection information to the computer and at low revs too much fuel was being injected and therefore the computer stopped the fuel flow!!!!
  • Vauxhall Zafira A (1999 - 2005) - 99 1.6 Fuel starvation? 11 Jun 2011 (Forum)
The car was serviced last month but the Vauxhall dealer failed to sort the problem - all they suggested was to replaced the fuel filter which didn't cure the problem. Has anyone heard of this problem before, or know if there are any vents in the fuel sysytem I can check? Although this is an annoying fault, I am concerned that it could happen whilst overtaking or in the outside lane of a busy motorway as the loss of power comes without warning; the only way to prevent this is to drive with the filler cap slightly loose!
  • Rover 45 (1999 - 2005) - 03 1.8 Fuel Gauge Calibrations, what do they mean? 12 Mar 2008 (Forum)
On my 2003 1.8IXS the instument dials are white. Now, the fuel gauge has two black dots on the right of the gauge which must just be the fixings? or do they mean anything? There are then two lines , one at about 'twenty to' an one at about 'ten to'. Are these indications of empty and full, as when the gauge drops to the lower line or thereabouts the little yellow petrol pump light comes on (intermittently), but there is still a long way to go to the right of this line and I am afraid I will run out of fuel.
  • Suzuki Ignis and 98Ron Fuel 18 Jun 2005 (Forum)
One's no supposed to read the book!) It states that only 98Ron fuel and above is to be used. This is re-iterated on the filler cap. I've been using Optimax as the only 98Ron fuel around, but now there is a new kid on the block - Tesco super is now 99Ron, and slightly cheaper (86.9p/l in Tesco Extra - Camberley/Blackwater) than Optimax (Around 89.9p/l in Fleet and around 85.9 in Portsmouth).
  • Semi-automatics. Real fuel consumption 9 Apr 2011 (Forum)
We are used to understanding that real world fuel consumption figures can be worse than the official figures for manual cars, so we can factor it in when choosing cars.   But what about semi automatics?   Do we get an extra hit on fuel consumption if we drive in full automatic mode?
  • Nissan Almera Tino - Fuel pump problem? 2 May 2015 (Forum)
If the information helps, on one occassion when I phoned the AA to start it, he 'manually primed' the fuel pump (?) and it started straight away. It has been to 3 different garages (including a main Nissan Dealership) none of whom have been much help. The glow plugs have been changed (no difference). Despite several diagnostic tests the best advice we can get is that it MIGHT need a new fuel pump.
  • Peugeot 307 diesel 2 Litre HDi - Can you make a Peugeot 307 fuel supply foolproof? 21 Apr 2015 (Forum)
They were expensive to correct as diagnosis was often flawed. It turned out that a frequent cause had to do with dirt in the fuel, resulting from bad handling of a fuel filter replacement. Screwloose advised not changing the filter cartridge but instead changing the whole filter. As this would be a costly move, he must know there is good reason for it.
  • Renault Clio 1.2 16v Petrol 2003 - Renault Clio Car wont start, got spark and fuel 18 Dec 2012 (Forum)
Hi there all mechanics, I have a clio 1.2 16v Petrol 2003 model that wont start, the problem is sometimes it starts and other times it wont. It has a good spark and plenty of fuel pressure going into the rail but wont start  most days. I have a spare fuel rail with injectors in it and have tried using it as a slave which I have connected to the fuel line and then taken off multiplug to No 4 and connected it to the slave and when I crank it over nothing comes from the injector.

  • Pug 306 - Air in fuel system 17 Oct 2011 (Forum)
After an hour or so of frantically trying to work out where it could be drawing air in (and hoping it wasn't corroded fuel lines) I found that the little white plug at the bottom of the filter housing was leaking fuel. I tried turning this but it just seems that it is not on threads so I can't tighten it.   I think that this is where the air is being sucked in, now I have a few questions.
  • Ford Escort van N reg 1800 diesel - sluggish/bad fuel consumption 24 Jan 2011 (Forum)
It just seems to me that something is just not fireing correct like in a petrol engine that is miss firing .Also my biggest concern is the drop in fuel consumption i used to get 475-540 to a tank now it is down to 360-380 . I have spoke to my local garage and the reply was it must be the fuel pump very expensive to sort out . Can a fuel pump make this happen i think it is something very simple that has been overlooked but i know nothing about engines so im useless.
