Romanian registered former UK cars 24 Sep 2022 (Forum)
Travelling to France and back weekly via the ferries on the Dover Straits, I have noticed that recently there has been a surge of UK right hand drive cars coming to the UK with Romanian number plates. I am not sure why it is necessary to drive these cars all the way to Romania and then bring them back, rather than just leaving them as UK registered cars, except that now the cars would be impervious to speed cameras and parking fines. -
n/a - Expats using UK driving licence. 22 Nov 2017 (Forum)
Whether or not it is necessary to exchange the UK licence for the licence of the country where the expat is living depends on the law of that country. In France for example, it is not necessary to exchange the UK licence for a french one unless one commits a driving offence, so that they can award points, which they can't do on a UK licence. -
PURFLUX LS152B ALCO-810 - Oil filter size Purflux 7 Sep 2017 (Forum)
Purflux stopped making the LS152B few years ago and finding one is nearly impossible. Apart few in France but they wont ship to the UK. So I tried to find the equivalent. Got lucking with some LS127 but i have used my last one. Sameproblem as the LS152. So I bought a pair of ALCO-810. They have the same external size -86mm- and M18x1.5. -
Nissan Navara - The old Nissan Navara versus Hilus vs Isuzu debate 10 Oct 2015 (Forum)
Upset as was great for what i needed and only had 31000k on the clock. Anyway, hoping the insurance pays out first and foremost as I was in France, another story. Decision now is the replacement, Hilux expensive but never heard of any problems, Navara looks great but no end of engine issues so I keep reading, or Isuzu Rodeo, solid but not exciting according to what i've read. -
Should I invest in a Land Rover Defender? 22 Feb 2015 (Ask HJ)

Vauxhall Zafira B - Useless tyre repair kit 12 Oct 2013 (Forum)
My Zafira SRi came with stupid 225/40 18 tyres, no spare, but a can of "glop" and a compressor. I damaged a sidewall in France, and, of course, the "glop" had no chance of sealing it. A new Dunlop SP Sport cost me 200 euros! When I got back to the UK, I bought a matching Dunlop for £100, then sourced a spare wheel cradle, wheelbrace and jack, and a 16" steel wheel with a 215/55 tyre from JST Motor Spares (through the Parts Gateway website). -
Sheep Trailer - Replacing 155-400 Tyres On An Old Trailer. 18 Apr 2013 (Forum)
I live in France and have an old two-wheeled sheep trailer maximum weight 490kg which has size 155-400 tyres. The trailer is in good condition so I would like to keep it. This is an old size tyre and now hard to find and expensive to buy. -
PEUGEOT 206 HDi - YEAR 2000 - FRONT END KNOCKING 13 Oct 2012 (Forum)
I recently fitted new shockers to both driver & passenger side front as I had suspected this was the cause of the previous knocking particularly on one side of the car. The noise is more pronounced now. I drive a lot in France and their village & narrow country roads are very poorly maintained - someone said it's their version of "sleeping policemen" and speed control Could well be right !! The knock is a series solid knocks. -
Hyundai Tucson 2005 CRTD CDX - Engine misfiring 9 Oct 2012 (Forum)
I was driving in France recently and having refuelled I drove about 200 miles on the autoroute at about 80mph. on decellerating to enter services, the engine started to misfire and run rough. I stopped it and restarted with the same result and was evenyually towed off to a garage. -
Speed limit rising from 70-80mph 8 Oct 2011 (Forum)
-There is more traffic now but cars are much safer, they have the ability to stop a lot quicker and we are all used to having the amount of cars on the road that there is. -Interestingly, France and Luxembourg have weather dependent speed restrictions:-when it raining 110kph, when not, 130kph...And obviously there is Germany who don't have a speed limit but recommend 130kph (70mph) I don;t know what the stats are for these in terms of fatality rates from crashes?? -
Skoda Octavia - Variable Servicing / Oil change 6 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Trouble is I can't get my head round a two year service interval ( I always did a six month intermediate oil change on my last car) and since we only cover 10K a year, so might be better changing to fixed annual service. Last service was April 09, next one due April 11 - we have a long trip to S of France this August. Q: Would it be wise to do a National Tyres Castrol Edge oil change now (£31.50 and 507.00 spec) or would it void my Approved Used Skoda warranty? Or is it really fine to run two years on the same oil. -
Motoring 'agony aunt' advice required 1 Jan 2010 (Forum)
I questioned my son closely when he told me he planned to marry, but apparently he thought it better that this fact was kept from me. Luckily, I am happily settled in France, 500 miles from any potential face-to-face embarrassment, so I don't feel the need to emigrate. But how will I keep a straight face if I ever see it? And what will I do if my friends find out? Any down-to-earth advice would be very welcome. -
Renault Scenic (1999 - 2003) - 03 1.6 Is the alternator checked during servicing? 30 Oct 2009 (Forum)
In May we had a major service (120,000 Kms - we live in France = 75,000miles), and at the same time, had our cam belt replaced - expensively. Last week, just 6,000 Kms later, the alternator pulley somehow stopped turning fully, shredded the V belt, which jammed the cam belt, resulting in bill totalling over 2,100 euros, or around £1,900. -
Honda Accord UK (1993 - 1998) - 96 2.0 Tapping noise when accelerating 12 Jul 2009 (Forum)
My wife says it sounds like I'm running some great big sewing machine! Could it be the fuel - I have made several trips to France recently and have filled up with 95 E10 grade petrol. Most petrol stations now have only this grade and rumour has it that this new stuff can cause problems with old cars.
