What's causing this 'anti-pollution fault' on my Peugeot 307SW?

I have a problem with my 2003 Peugeot 307 SW HDi. The fault is showing up as an anti-pollution fault. It comes on intermittently and the car is running very sluggish and losing power now and again. I have recently been on a long journey to France and the light came on during the return journey, with the display saying "Air pollution fault". I had no trouble and when I got off the ferry the light had gone off. I would like to know what's wrong so I don't get ripped off at the garage.

It's because the car has been driven on a succession of short runs from cold. It might clear once you can get it on a motorway and run it at 2000rpm or more for 50 miles. Alternatively, it's seven years old and the diesel particulate filter regenerating additive may have run out (it generally lasts 6-10 years or 60,000 - 100,000 miles). You'll need to see a Peugeot dealer about having that replenished. Access to the reservoir is usually under the back seat.

Makes sense of the 307. Up to seven forward-facing seats. Good to drive. Decent diesels.
