  • Rover 200 and 400 (1989 - 1996) - Electrical fault 1.4 petrol DOHC 10 Nov 2008 (Forum)
The fault gives the appearance of a flat battery but when you place a drain on the system like turning on the interior light the temperature gauge goes pass the hot mark even though the engine is cold and the ignition lights illuminate. The car doesn?t have an immobiliser and the effect seems too widespread to an ECU fault. Does anybody have any ideas?
  • Vauxhall Vectra B facelift (1999 - 2002) - 1999 1.8 irregular idle and stalling 18 Sep 2008 (Forum)
The big problem is that when the car is cold it stalls as the car comes to rest. Otherwise the car drives great on the open road. The ECU light's not been on so I guess there won't be an error code logged. Just wonder if this is a common problem and if anyone has had this happen to their car. Any ideas greatfully accepted. Credit crunch hitting badly, looking for a cheap and easy DIY fix ( Ishould be so lucky!)
  • Ford Fiesta (1989 - 1995) - 1995 1.3 Idle problems/overfuelling? 28 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I initially thought the idle control valve would be at fault, however he turned up in it yesterday and it's spluttering and blowing black smoke, which would suggest overfuelling? I think these ones are injection and ECU controlled, so no carb to fiddle with. He also reckons the temp gauge barely moved off cold even when stuck in traffic on a day like yesterday - seems odd! Not sure if this is related or a separate problem to investigate!
  • Vauxhall Vectra C (2002 - 2008) - 03 1.8 - slight kangarooing 2 May 2008 (Forum)

  • Renault Clio II (2001 - 2007) - Engine management light... 17 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Hi, Not so long back my clio came up with this engine management light (little orange icon in between clocks.), which limited my revs to 2500. I pulled over and switched off my engine which reset the ECU, then days later it came on again and over time its got worse. Now its every 5 mins or so... ive spent a fortune on it in garages and no body can find the problem. Its had a new throttle body, new pedal and all wiring has been checked.
  • FIAT - Fiorino van, 2000-W, 1.7TD, only has one blue key. 26 Feb 2008 (Forum)
I am asking as i only received one blue key with the van, and would like to know if i can get a copy made without having to pay main dealer prices, or fit a whole new immobiliser/ecu system. The blue key doesnt have any numbers on it, but does have a circle and triangle on it if that helps?. Many thanks for your advice in advance :)
  • Audi A3 + S3 (1996 - 2001) - To remap, or not to remap? 8 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Hi There, Just a quick question really. I have an Audi A3 1.8T (Automatic tranny 2000 - 53K) and am thinking about getting a remap of the ECU to increase it's power. I enjoy the car at the moment, but I thought a remap would put a bigger grin on my face. Don't get me wrong, i do not intend to thrash the car, never have, but simply want to have a little more 'go' from time to time.
  • Toyota - 2006 Yaris T Spirit diesel - EML light. 5 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Bought this car new last November and within a week the engine management light came on. Took the car back to the dealership where a new ECU was fitted. Two days later the light was back and the car yet again returned to the dealership. After a lot of scratching of heads the consensus of opinion was that there was nothing to worry about and it would probably disappear of its own accord!
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2003 - TDCi Turbo Failure 29 Nov 2007 (Forum)
On investigation it seems its the vane control stepper motor thats at fault, a little box bolted on to the turbo that talks to the main ECU and operates the intenal boost vanes via a stepper motor and a linkage. You can't buy this seperate as Garret say that it has to be set up to the turbo !!!! Just seems a waste of a good turbo and money.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - Flashing glow plug light 24 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I am wondering if I can buy any software and do it myself. It seems pretty easy as the code is written on the engine and I just need to enter it into ECU. Many thanks in advance.
  • Fault Code readers 14 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Mainly just to check for codes periodically when I am servicing my cars, as inthe past I have had problems, and there has been fault codes lodged inthe ECU when read, and the dashboard light has not come on (why ??) Ihave a 1994 Corolla, (UK car) and a 1995 Celica (grey import) IS there a "standard" for diagnostic ports/codes etc. that manufacturers conform to, or does everyone use a different one.
  • BMW 320td - worth buying a warranty? 14 May 2007 (Forum)
The CBCBD says that "320d M47 150bhp models are getting a reputation for repeated turbo failure, possibly due to extended oil service intervals. After replacing turbo, ECU needs to be reprogrammed. Also instances of injector failure. BMW says that only EU3 320d engines built before October 2003 are affected by the turbo problem". Other BM forums seems to support this.
  • Citroen Saxo Bunny Hops 13 Mar 2007 (Forum)
The first problem we've had with it is a very common problem, that it's very hard to start. The idol is far too low, and we initially assumed it was a problem with the ECU, but more recently have come to think that it's a problem with the little stepper motor. To fix the idol, I could simply hold my foot on the accelerator whilst the car was stationary. But lately, the car has been doing bunny hops.
  • Rover 220SDi 1997 Poor Cold Starting 18 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Checked for heater voltage, none apparent although relay works ok. + 12V present at relay, earths through ECU for correct operation. Wired in bypass switch to earth, cold start still poor with stalling engine. Any ideas/ further checks. Bus will be read on Friday for stored faults.
  • diesel particulate filter - Audi A4 (06) 10 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Since purchase , filter has been a nightmare. Clogs up on short and repetitive town journeys.Broken down 3 times to be towed away. Had new ECU, new filter, new sensors. Light is still coming on. Been in over 15 times to Audi. they say car cannot have filter removed. I love car but hate filter with passion. C I have even written letter saying they may have to refund for car if it breaks down again.
  • Fiesta fuel tank pressure / breather 28 Jun 2006 (Forum)
I have just posted a thank you in this list but in case you can't see it was coming in through a cutout above the ECU/immobiliser. Not much rain in Somerset hence the delay in thanking you all.
  • Job 31 Mar 2006 (Forum)
I'm deliberately not going to give much detail so that people don't rule anything out. I'm very interested in cars, motorbikes, computers, and computer systems (Even down to car ECU's etc.) I know that a lot of BRer's (!) are intelligent and/or have interesting sounding jobs. So, if you can - Suggest me a job that you think would cover my interests/knowledge. Mods feel free to delete if you see fit...
  • lifetime warranties 19 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Isn't it time warranties, on certain components at least, were essentially lifetime. Particularly things that have no moving parts. I'm thinking of things like ECU's, sensors, & connectors. What do backroomers think ?
  • Rover 220 Coupe (1995) 11 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I gather that this engine has a crank position sensor but am not sure where it is located as I know that some engines use a sensor in distributor to tell ECU the firing TDC position. Anyone out there experienced similar problems on this model or anything else that could cause non-starting? (The immobiliser is also working correctly). Andrew
  • 1998 VW Passat TDi poor performance 3 Nov 2005 (Forum)
If someone can list some possible areas to check, I would be most grateful. The turbo charger and associated pipes appear to be intact, could the cause be ECU related, or even the turbo itself? All info gratefully received. TDi Tortoise!
