  • from a big v6 to a small diesel - HELP! 7 Aug 2012 (Forum)
If the performance was slightly better I may feel different but the fact is that £95 will see 300 miles, or 350 on a run. My plan is to get a more economical car and then later in the year swap the wife’s 206 for an MX5 or something devilish! I really do loath diesels, my last 3 cars (all company cars) were a Leon, a BMW 330d and a BMW 530d.
  • Faulty Second Hand Car 23 May 2012 (Forum)
The fault codes that came up said that i had a problem with the gearbox due to lack of pressure. The garage advised me to run the car for 2-3 days as codes could have been stored for a long time. He said if it happened again, to return and have the codes checked again to come to a diagnosis. I went out this evening to the shop in the car and travelled approx 2 miles and it happened again.
  • Jaguar X-Type - Do i have a claim 31 Jan 2012 (Forum)
Around Mid September my wife was applyimg for the tax online as it ran out end of September. It said that the MOT had run out in early august only 3-4 weeks after i bought the car. I was under the impression that it had a full MOT as it was from a dealer. I took the car to the garage again for its MOT. I got the MOTand service and re-taxed the car ok.
  • Peugeot 106 - Cash in Lieu - settlement value? 5 Jul 2011 (Forum)
I had an accident a couple of weeks ago where I crashed into the back of my girlfriend's car - I was at fault (although it's more towards the 'one of those things that just happens' end of the spectrum) and I'm trying to get my car sorted under my fully comprehensive policy with Admiral. The car itself runs fine but there is damage to to bodywork - the sort that doesn't look much but costs quite a lot to fix. The approved repairer gave an estimate of £1600, making it an economic write off - but I've got personal reasons for wanting to keep the car (it needs to go to my brother in a couple of years time), plus I know it to be good and reliable, and I had new parts fitted about a month ago.
  • Protection of Freedoms Bill: a weasel clause 26 Feb 2011 (Forum)
I have seen franchise offers advertised on eBay, encouraging people to set up these money-spinners.  They are run pitilessly by villains and cause untold misery to people who they hound for payment, which can be for large sums of money - several hundred pounds if you don't pay up immediately. At the moment, to enforce these "fines" the companies need to establish who a driver is, since any contract to park would be with a driver and not the owner of a vehicle.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 2000/xreg 2.0 Ghia fuel pump/fuse 20 Feb 2011 (Forum)
Would using a 20 amp or 30 amp fuse (like Green Flag did) instead of the 15 amp be ok (i doubt it). When the car is moving it runs perfectly and always has, it's a great car. This fault is very frustrating any views or help would be greatly appreciated. s
  • Peugeot 406 2.0 HDi (90) - Fuelling Problem - Pressure Regulator? 18 Feb 2011 (Forum)
Its a 2.0 HDi (90bhp) and has been a great car to us over the years.  A few weeks ago the engine light came on and it started running on for a second or 2 after it was turned off at the ignition.  Then after a few days, there was some power loss (difficult to say how much because i never really push the car too hard anyway).
  • Alfa GT 3.2 V6 - Problems with new(to me) car dealer won't fix! 12 Feb 2011 (Forum)

  • Peugeot 206 - Peugeot 2.0 HDI Naughtyness 21 Jan 2011 (Forum)
Hi, Sorry for the rather strange topic title, anyway on Monday I was driving back from work and on my way to my local Tesco station to fill up with Diesel and the fiel guage was reading about a few millimiters above the area where it would normally beep and display fuel low(or something to that effect) I have never intentionally driven my 206 in the reserve for fear of both running out of fuel and also sucking up a load of crap from the fuel tank. Driving along nicely and then the engine management light came on along with a beep and anti pollution fault(which is something that has popped up ever now and then-my 206 does not have a FAP filter system) so I tried to start it and it wouldn't...I had to call the AA in the end which had to tow me back to my house(less than 2 miles away) but before doing so he tried various things like asking the obvious if there was sufficient fuel in the tank etc etc(which there was according the the guage) and upon connecting it to his computer it came back a fault relating to the error code P1112 fuel rail pressure.
  • Skoda Octavia TDi 110 - Water Pump. Intended to help others...... 1 Jan 2011 (Forum)
After I finished the job I started the engine and it ran perfectly fine, but the traction control light was on. At first I thought it might be because I had the car on my two post ramp at work and had run the engine with the wheels off the ground. Some drive is often transmitted through the gearbox even though it's in neutral, and this often brings on the ABS lamp. I thought the lamp would go out when I drove up the road, but it did not.
  • How big a risk not to change a cambelt yet ? 18 Apr 2010 (Forum)
I am quite prepared to spend the £400 or so that the new cambelt change would cost at present but as I am 77 years old and I am not sure how long I will be driving and I want to avoid if I can paying for another cambelt change in the future so I am thinking of stretching out the recommended replacement intervals. If over the next five or six years I can manage on one more cambelt replacement i would then be able if needed run the car into the ground -------------------------------------------- THE reasons why I think it would probably be safe to do so. Yes I do know age determines the life of a cambelt but stress must also be a massive factor on what that age is.I think the most stress on a cambelt is when the engine is started in my case the car is used on average once a week so the collective  stress factor level on the belt would be far less than a car used every day.
  • Mondeo mk3 estate or Landcruiser Colorado? 13 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I've been running a '03 mk3 Mondeo TDCI (130) Estate in Ghia X spec for the last 20 months - I brought it at 107k, the car has now done almost 128k and just before Christmas the DMF/Clutch went and the DMF, clutch and slave cylinder were all replaced.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 95 2.0 XSI died and I'm too stupid to make it go 25 Oct 2009 (Forum)
All the lights on the dash flickered and there was a very fast "ticking" or "pulsing" sound... I didn't run away thinking this was a bomb as this happened once before and it cost me a £65 call out from the garage to be told "I just tried the key in your door mate". I tried this about 50 times along with wrestling with the neg terminal on the battery to no avail.
  • BMW 5-Series E34 (1987 - 1996) - 91 3.5 Won't start. 28 May 2009 (Forum)
So my '91 535i was running strong as always. I went to get new tires. while I was heading there, it stumbled twice, but small, just a single missed fire on each occasion which I attributed to the engine being cold and old, but still idled smooth and ran strong.
  • BMW 5-Series E39 (1996 - 2003) - 99 3.0 530d Autobox Issue - ?? 9 May 2009 (Forum)
It is not possible to drain the Torque converter on these babies without taking said box out or doing the old oil cooler off trick and running the engine. Anyway... I have spoken to one garage and they say TORQUE CONVERTER - spoke to other and they said no way, if the car drives in reverse then it is not the TC, more likely the FWD clutch...
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - My Fiesta - now more confused. 4 Jan 2009 (Forum)
My own mechanic has a leave it to MOT attitude but I will happily spend £250 on getting the faults fixed as the car seems to be reliable engine wise despite its 9 previous owners (the last person owned the car for 3 years and the last 5 MOTs have been at the same garage). The brake pipes I am confused about, as there are some brand new pipes running under the sills, but then there appears to be a pipe inside the coils which are rusty, but looking at the rear of the brakes there is a brand new pipe going into the drums so what are two pipes for?
  • Toyota Yaris (1999 - 2005) - Garage keep finding new faults - now another £700? 16 Dec 2008 (Forum)
We agreed at this point that the coolant sensor probably didn't need replacing after all, so this would be discounted and I would face a max price of £1500. I then receive a call telling me that they have done all the work, but now can't make the car run under it's own fuel supply and that it must have been something they did while stripping the engine. They had stripped and rebuilt it three times and couldn't find any problems, so believed it to be electrical and brought in a specialist.
  • Had my first breakdown not nice - Clutch has gone 15 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I can get this fixed for £150, but I am drawing the line now, I am going to rob swap the ICV, MAF and other sensors which are working fine put them on my dads (which is not running right), then sell my car on ebay. I have already spent £200 repairing as they were safety things:- Tow bar removed general check over and oil change - £50 New door latch, reverse switch and cv boot £80 Two new Pirerri tyres at £39 each, £78 New air filter - did this myself £5 New brake fluid cap - did myself £7.00 I am now kicking and screaming at myslef for letting my dad test drive the car (he knows nothing about mechanics) I didn't have insurance so could not test drive it myself.
  • FIAT Punto II (1999 - 2006) - Buying a new battery off a big national company 22 Nov 2008 (Forum)
I'm sure that you will agree that this level of customer service is not ideal. As I had a pending hospital appointment and was running out of time, I asked if I could leave the car whilst the battery was fitted. I was told that it 'will only take fifteen minutes'. The old battery was removed and it became clear very quickly that the Calcium one that I had purchased was larger and would not fit (despite the fitter's efforts) into the battery holder.
