406 Cambelt Gone - worth repairing? 10 Nov 2005 (Forum)
(Book time 10-16 hours + parts) Cost hopefully around £200 (belt) + £500? head and valve work??? Car is worth (if someone buys it) probably £1200 running, but has been a faithful "armchair" to work.. for almost 100k. What else would one expect to go? Fuel pump? (orig) Turbo? (orig)Clutch (orig), gearbox (orig) ... b. Scrap / sell it for spares for £300? -
What is the best way to sell a Rover 45? 26 Oct 2005 (Forum)
This would give me the most money but is also the most hassel and I'm not sure how much I would acutally get and then there is the cost of running ads and subscribing to sites. 4) Local, Friends, Collegues, I'm not very keen on this idea but it could happen. I have managed to sell a car before to a co-worker and it worked out very well but the potential to go wrong is large and I don't fancy this at all. 5) Something else I haven't thought of yet, please suggest. -
Is a car more important than a home? 9 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Motoring is only one expense that a household has, do these other pressures seriously impact your decission to either maintain your car or improve your home? Personally I run a 7 year old car and am currently renovating my home to a very high standard. The car is useful to transport rubbish to the dump, an older car makes sense to do this. Car maintenance is important and sometimes I carry our simple DIY, but also use garages for speed and reliabilty. -
Driving on the Isle of Wight 22 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Luckily we were early and arrived only 5 minutes late for the check-in time, only to find the ferry was running 45 minutes late anyway. The jam on the roads also meant the ship could not unload quickly and many cars remained on the ramp for quite a long time, delaying loading. Interestingly the ferry decks were marked out with three lines either side of a central barrier, but they only used 2 lanes either side. -
Insurance: change car / add young driver 24 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Son really is likely to be just an occasional driver: he's not a petrol head and is mostly learning now because I suggested it was the best time of his life to do so: hardly any commitments, few financial worries, etc. Plus he'll hopefully be off to Uni in October and I don't anticipate him running a car then! But I expect to be 'off the road' for a few months after Easter and having another driver in the family could be useful. Looking forward to insightful comments from Mark et al ... -

Just such a pleasure to fiddle with my V-8 today Sunday, then fire her up right on the button. She runs sweet as a nut and you know that's because you set her up right. Satisfaction. Grease under the fingernails, the pleasure of handling that dying species -- a 7/16" wrench. 2 of them actually That sensual feeling when you drag 12 thou through the gap and you know it feels just right...... -
Blackbushe today 3 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Whilst never aspiring to the standards of our great leader I offer the following for your amusement. Only one hall was running but was this quite crowded. I would guess the split as 40% trade 60% punters which may explain why the prices were in my opinion too high. I am not trade by the way so I could be talking nonsense. -
Self employment - Market Niche?? 11 Dec 2003 (Forum)
However, he also does general haulage and is not short of work. He will be paying HGV tax, which I guess would be more than the total running costs of both my car and trailer. The other idea is to buy a small fleet of trailers for hire. I used to work for a trailer hire company and the revenue was quite remarkable. The closest trailer hire company to this area is some 20 miles away, so if you're going to hire that tipper trailer to clear your garden and take the refuse to the tip, you've got to go an extra 80 miles (2 return trips) to take the trailer there and bring it back. -
International Classic Motor Show 12 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Anyway, the world and his wife were there, a remarkable cross section of society from those with the means to restore a 1936 Rolls-Royce (a friend of mine as it happens, although I'm certainly not in his bracket -- bumped into him at the show) to those who love all the dirty bits of a 1960s Vauxhall Viva. It's a major event, spread over halls 7--12, and it runs the whole gamut from the brand new super-Jag (can't recall or find it's name/number), through classics to drool over (e.g. an absolutely superb black 1956 Maserati A6G 2000 -- fewer than 100 built), to some exquisite vintage cars, and from body-panel manufacturers to traders in every widget you could imagine, plus of course a fair sprinkling of tat. -
The decision (maybe) ? Small Car 10 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Please forgive me as I imagine you regulars have gone over this before, and I will search the archives promise. However, right now either the site or my computer is running so slowly, that this seemed the best thing to do. I've been posting about our decision making process to find a small car suitable for our 19 (next month) year old daughter to learn to drive in, which will then go on to be a car for her use. -
Omega query: tie-rods fouling alloys. 4 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Sorry for the ramble, I'm not angry but just really disappointed, this is the second visit to 2 separate garages, from the GG list, to do relatively straightforward repairs; First time it was to change the rocker cover gaskets due to a small oil leak - went in with a beautifully smooth running, near silent engine, came out with a lumpy idle and a dodgy rattle from the cambelt area. Now this..... It's a shame because it's putting me off what is genuinely a great car due to no fault of it's own. -
Accident questions 22 Jun 2003 (Forum)
The other driver appeared to be pulling out from the driveway, I started off after her, glanced left to make sure the road was clear, but by the time I'd looked back, she'd stopped (for no obvious reason) and I couldn't stop in time to avoid gently running in to her bumper. At the time of the accident, I said that I'd be prepared to pay for the repair unless it was very expensive, on the basis that it was likely to be cheaper that way than claiming off my insurance. -
Insurance and "chipping" your car 11 May 2003 (Forum)
I've run this thread past Mark (RLBS) to make sure I'm not treading on any toes. I'm about to have my Alfa 156 2.4JTD chipped as it's one of the earlier ones with the lower power output and mpg. I've read a number of threads on the subject and the one thing that sticks out like a sore thumb is the insurance aspect. -
Well I liked it.... 9 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Of course, once he realised it was a BMW behind him, he did just that, but I could hardly believe it when he pulled straight back out behind me! He also tried to keep up with me and when he realised I would out-run him, he put on some blue lights in his front grill and urged me to get onto the hardshoulder so that he could congratulate me on my excellent car. Needless to say, I was eager to oblige and when we had stopped, the man gave me a piece of paper confirming what I already knew - that my car goes fast! -
Deisel "Take-off" 16 Sep 2002 (Forum)
It was revving flat out-screamming, in a situation like that what are you supposed to do, the ignition was off (though in that car I think it just stops the diesel supply, but of course by now it was running of the engine oil), how can you stop it? After about 10 mins of continuous revving, and almost shutting off the m62 due to the emmense smoke, it gave one last cough and died, timidly I checked the oil/water levels, the oil was about back to normal, it had used a fair bit of water, so I tried to start it, and it turned over and was fine. -
martini publicity car by viotti turin 18 Jul 2002 (Forum)
The car was only 90% complete (the dorsal fin was gone as were the bottle and the seats plus some of the interior). Therefore this call for help to all readers who might have pictures, information etc on how the exact look of the nose and the dorsal fin was , which seats were used and any other info regarding the life of this unusual coupe. The aim is to have the car up and running next year , almost 70 years after the coupe hit the Italian roads. Thank you Bernard Berkein -
Good Cheer 22 Nov 2001 (Forum)
The guy was all over the road. I had to swerve a number of times before I hit him. The pedestrian had no idea which way to run, so I ran over him. An invisible car came out of nowhere, struck my car and vanished. A truck backed through my windshield into my wife's face. I pulled away from the side of the road, glanced at my mother-in-law, and headed over the embankment. -
Ferrari 1 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Added to that, a Testarossa, which to be fair I have only ever driven once, seems to be inordinately cheap when compared to other models, even though I've always believed it to be a good car. Is it ? I haven't got a particular car in mind at this minute, but an 89/90 seems to run between 45k & 50k pounds. If you can point me to a good site, all well and good. But most of them have somewhat of an irritating and superior attitude and seem to regard these cars as works of art, rather than something to be driven and enjoyed. -
Fiat Brava 1.4 timing belt. 24 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Now this Fiat has a tensioner that is moved to a set position then has a spring to take up the last bit. In running this spring allows the tensioner pulley to move a fair bit with an alarming whip to the belt. The result of this on the car I have here is that the old belt has already worn halfway through the plastic lower timing belt cover (where the whipping has thrown it out of line) and the back of the belt is damaged from this constant rubbing. -
Renault Laguna II - Renault - You couldn't make it up! 13 Sep 2020 (Forum)
They don't know, but have no date as yet, so it is likely to be weeks, possibly months. Now the owner of the car is running out of patience, as you might expect. Facing the prospect of another wait for the part, and a wait of unknown duration at that, in addition to the three week wait they've already tolerated, they think that perhaps the best option is to renew the vehicle rather than possibly have it unusable for a further period which may run into months for all they know.
