  While the 12V engine might be fairly cheap to maintain, it is prone to exhaust failure, and as with any cars of this age it’s important to check for rust, damage, and worn out components like suspension. On the bright side, the Corsa 1.0-litre 12V is abundant and cheap – a 2000 X-reg, 80,000 mile model with a fresh service and MOT can be had for less than £1000.

Other class A drivers to keep an eye on include Jensen's team mate, Roger Orgee from Langford, in the Van Diemen RF00 and former champion, Ed Moore from Melksham, in the recalcitrant Ray GR11.

  All in all, Porsche built 65 units of the 917; 44 sports cars as short-tail and long-tail coupés, two PA Spyders as well as 19 sports cars as CanAm and Interseries Spyders with up to 1,400 hp turbo engines. Seven of the most important 917 models – among them the Le Mans victory cars from 1970 and 1971 and the 917/30 Spyder – are currently exhibited in the new Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. This year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed will also provide the setting for another demonstration of Porsche endurance, grit and determination.

  Dating from early 1932, the Wolseley Hornet Special on offer at Blackbushe was first registered in New Zealand and imported to the UK in the late 1980s. Finished in British Racing Green, with the bonnet in bare aluminium, the car has black trim and a serviceable hood and sidescreens. This car is eligible for the Vintage Sports Car Club (VSCC) and has been in regular use for club events in recent years.

  The critical issues that influence the choice of vehicle haven’t changed significantly, with price still coming top of the list at 52% ahead of make/model, mileage and age. However, environmental issues continue to increase in importance for used car buyers. This year saw 6% of respondents saying environmental considerations would be an influencing factor when they next buy, compared to 4% last year and just 2% in 2006. Significantly it is the less well off and poorest sectors of the consumer marketplace that are most likely to consider the environment in their car purchase – almost certainly driven by the rising cost of motoring in the past 12 months.
