  • 2003 VW Passat 1.9 litre TDI, 140,000 miles. - My car is blowing up batteries! =/ 12 Apr 2020 (Forum)
The alternator was on it's way out any way (I got it from a scrap yard), when I revved hard a warning showed up on the dash "alternator workshop". I checked the alternator a few times when it was running, and when at idle it was fine; so I thought it was just losing a bit of power generating capacity when the car was revved hard so kept using it. Can any thing else cause the instant death of a battery?
  • Priority - For benefit of Galileo 1 Mar 2020 (Forum)
No insurance with a slight twist. - galileo   I had a run in with the police about a junction and I said to him that unless road signs indicate otherwise or you are directed by an official person you should be giving way to traffic from your right, his reply was since when has that been the case ( or something like that ) to which I replied always.
  • Mazda 5 - Mazda 5 - 2008 - D I E S E L ! losing power 23 Oct 2019 (Forum)
Once home, I inspected the car and took it out for a drive and noted no issues at all with power delivery or smooth running. I checked for fault codes (historic, current and pending) and nothing was shown.  I checked all the likely candidates for lost power such as boost pipes etc but found nothing untoward.
  • KIA Ceed 2011 - The mystery of the resurrected battery... 21 Oct 2019 (Forum)
I order my new battery online. Change the battery - starts - Great! Let’s take it for a decent run, 40 minutes. On the off chance I try the stereo. It switches on, no bother. So strange... did that initial jump knacker the battery? Will test the alternator tomorrow. Fingers cross it was just the battery...
  • Loud exhausts 17 Sep 2019 (Forum)
Simple solution if you live in the UK and know the registration of the offending vehicle...…  Go to askMID.com (the Motor Insurance Database), pay £4.50 to run a search on that reg number, and you'll receive the details of the insurance company and the policy number related to that vehicle.  Now one thing to note is that askMID states that you SHOULD be enquiring about that registration number as the result of an ACCIDENT, and that you may otherwise be committing an offence by obtaining said information contrary to Section 170 of the Data Protection Act.
  • Honda civic 2011/8th gen - Honda 1.8 Lost motion spring fail destroyed engin 1 Sep 2019 (Forum)
While driving slowly on a bumpy country road my civic suddenly stopped, without warning.  It has near full dealer service history 62k, was running well and recent MOT had barely detectable emissions. The garage have stripped the head off and one of the Lost motion assembly springs has snapped and a chunk has become jammed underneath a cam lobe, locking the cam.

  • Nissan Almera Tino 2.2 dCi - Poor fuel economy 6 Apr 2019 (Forum)
Has this 2.2 chain cam engine any known foibles which may be giving me my problems. In general running the engine feels strong, and certainly doesn't appear lacking in power or torque and certainly isn't smoking excessively or anything obvious like that. My next move was to try some Redex injector cleaner when I next fill up, as a last hope....
  • Honda Accord Tourer - Am I being ripped off? 23 Nov 2018 (Forum)
I told them it had been tested before but he just shrugged his shoulders and said they couldn’t tell until they had replaced the coils and got it running. The car is only worth about £2k so I will probably scrap it, but before I do, I just want to check that this all sounds reasonable, and they are not ripping me off for the £280 they say I still owe them.

  • Diesel estates for motorway driving- 33k miles p/a 20 Aug 2018 (Forum)
My budget would be somewhere up to £15k on the second-hand market, for which I'd like to not exceed 60k miles, maybe 5-6 years old at maximum. I'm trying to run this new car for 3/4 years after which I would it expect to be worthless. Cars I've looked at thus far: Audi A4 Avant (Ultra models), Mercedez C class (bluetec/blueefficiency models), Mazda 6 Tourer, BMW 3 series Gran Turismo (not an Estate, butit caught my eye).
  • Citroen C3 (2002 - 2009) - 02 1.4HDi 16v engine cutting out at random 7 Jun 2018 (Forum)
Hi all, I really hope you can help me, I've been having a long running problem with my 1.4HDi 16V for the past few months now and nobdoy seems to have any clue what is wrong with it: Symptoms: I get this problem very intermittently and seemingly randomly about 2-3 times per week: Driving along as normal, there is a very distinct and severe loss of power (undoubtedly no fuel being injected).
  • Avensis Petrol 1.8 - Clutch Judder When Used a Lot 26 Nov 2017 (Forum)
Most of the time everything is fine; can do longish runs eg 1-2 hours, motorway trips etc no problem. Stop, engage first gear, let the clutch out as normal - everything fine - until - If I do trips which are stop-start - eg traffic congestion, driving through city centres, lots of traffic lights, rush hour driving etc, then everything ok for first 20 mins or so of that kind of use.
  • New engine failed after 9000 miles, where next 21 Oct 2017 (Forum)
After an examination of the engine and an oil analysis, they confirmed the oil was in perfect condition, indicating it hadn't been run low. The only problem they could identify was silicon contamination at quite a high level in the oil, citing several possible reasons for this, one of which was environmental contamination. TMO has seized upon this part of the report and stated that this was the cause of the failure and the garage were, therefore, not repsonsible.
  • Mk5 golf Gt Tdi - Mk5 golf Gt Tdi turbo issues, help!! 11 Oct 2017 (Forum)
I don't want to throw any more time at it as it's so frustrating, I've heard it can perminantly damage the engine, I noticed a leak on the intercooler hose where it meets the intercooler, its noticeable when I'm driving the boost noise, I've left it in hopes that it lets enough out so it counteracts the overboost and stops engine failure, just hit 100k and done 800 mile runs where it hasn't happened, but under load increases the risk of it coming back, I don't know what to do anymore, I'm worried that the turbo will s*** the bed, we have just had a newborn and we rely on our car, we are worried that the turbo could die any day... anyone able to help??..
  • renault laguna - dephaser problems,,read the book! 9 Jun 2017 (Forum)
i bought a 2004 renault laguna diamonique it was 2 months old so basically it was a new car and i have still got it ,, it has done 46000 miles and of course had tyres and services,, at 30 000 miles it had a set of track rod ends , done by a mechanic,, i replaced the track rod ends again a couple of months ago ,, now the engine was terribly noisy after some investigation the dephaser pulley was at fault,, i rang around various garages and no one wanted to touch it ,,,,i decided to do it my self ,, after buying the special tools required to do the job i had it done in around 4 hrs ,, the pulley wheel itself was £145 and various tools required like the setting pin and camshaft holding tool was around £50 ,,, if you are going to attempt this job yourself make sure you read the haynes manual although its fairly straight forward , i didnt see the item where the crankshaft bolt must not exceed 49.1 mm as the origonal bolt was nearly 55mm in length the laguna was sweet as a nut for around a week ,, you can guess wat is coming,, it stopped and wudnt start i got it towed home and discovererd the bolt on the crankshaft had come loose there is no woodruff key holding the crankshaft sprocket in place now this bolt came loose because it was too long ,,, and the crank slipped bending all 16 valves which cost me alot of money to repair the laguna lives again but this is just a small warning to anyone wanting to attempt such a repair themselves,,,whether renault has designed the v,v t engine to slip the crank on purpose forcing you to take it to a renault dealer to repair costing £86 per hour (which i didnt) who knows ,, but to me it seems ridiculous that a simple bolt can cause massive engine damage ,,,,,i do love my laguna and like i said early it was near new when i purchased it and now it is running smooth again i intend to keep it for a lot longer
  • Toyota Avensis - Buying an older higher mileage Toyota 2 Feb 2017 (Forum)
I am starting a new job and could afford to take out a bank loan and spend around £7.5k but I don't really like spending money if it's unnecessary and I'd rather not unless I have to. My question is will it be better in the long run to invest in something better or will the cheaper option be a solid runner? The older car is the old shape so there is a saving for that reason. Also I know the maintenance cost will be higher for the older car but then I will have spent £3.5k less on the actual car (almost half!)
  • More pot-holes than road? 16 Dec 2016 (Forum)
It is now positively dangerous (on my motorcycle) to ride on British roads, during fair weather daylight times, when the roads are empty of traffic. And, my expectations are not simply in relation to 'main' roads either - I expect all roads to be 'roadworthy' . Do I ask for too much with the tax revenues running into approximately £40+ billion per year (yes BILLION!))? It's an embarrassment to the nation. I once wrote to my local, tory MP (and no - I didn't vote 'em in) and received a reply of: "We will not be dictated-to by the electorate on what we decide to spend taxation on".
  • BMW 320d ED 4dr vs Mondeo Titanium - New job, new car = Mondeo or 3 Series 12 Jun 2016 (Forum)
I could not see me keeping any car for more than 4 years. I would like a good MPG, over 50 in the real world ideally - so low running costs.  A bit of a status sysmbol given new job role. The cars I looked at have been Modeo, 3 Series saloon and also Coupe (V Nice), C Class, CLA and CLS - there are probably better options for my situations than the latter two.
  • Opinions required 23 May 2016 (Forum)
I also have kit I need to get in and out of the back seat (so need 5 doors) The car park at work is not spacious.  I don't want a large car.  I would like low running costs, I don't need a high performance or prestige car, I just want a reliable car! Unfortunately my luck with cars is not good, I did have a Freelander bought new in 1999 that unlike many of its type ran for years, and was still going strong 10 years later having trekked across Europe and done over 120k (though it did need its wiring loom totally redone) and did leak a little bit of oil (but its a Landrover..).
