On the downside, it's only a 2.0-litre (if it were a Cosworth-developed V6, you wouldn't be reading this as we'd have already bought it) and it has a few cosmetic defects, but on the plus side, it's in range-topping Ultima spec, with air-con, auto 'box, cruise control, reverse parking sensors and a premium sound system, though, oddly, no leather - it was a free of charge delete option on the Ultima.

  KIA has relaunched its Shuma 5-door hatchback as the new look Shuma II with a new interior and with prices from just £8,995 (the same as Citroen's current price for the Xsara 1.4LX with a/c). The size of the cars is similar to that of the Mitsubishi Carisma, Skoda Octavia and old Vauxhall Vectra, so it's longer than a Focus, but smaller than a Mondeo. £8,995 buys the 1.6L, which has the sweeter of the two engines on offer.

Though some end of year new car discounts are making used cars look dear right now, short supply will push used prices back up again in the new year, so anything bought well this month is almost bound to be worth more next month.

  BCA reports that in November 2006, auction prices for the three-year-old, 60,000-mile 'fleet' cars averaged £6,524 - down just £57 on October’s figure, but up £162 against the same month last year. In 2005, the fall between October and November was a £150.

  Van drivers have a reputation for racking up more miles than most, but in Nigel Weaver’s case the last half a million have all been in the same vehicle. The 53-year old courier from Maidenhead, Berks, bought his Vauxhall Combo new from Burnham Garage in Slough in 2001, just as the model was making its debut. Seven years later, after averaging over 75,000 miles a year, Nigel’s Combo has just clocked up its first 500,000 miles, all on the original engine.

  The Privacy Phone is missing. The handbook clearly states this as being “provided” with the car. Initially the dealer said that I should not expect to find this in a 10-year old car, but their last statement says “the car was not advertised or sold with the benefit of a Privacy Phone being fitted” and that it was my responsibility to satisfy myself with the condition and specification of the car prior to taking delivery.

You should press MB to pay, saying it is a safety concern.   Crash cams An in-car camera seems to me to be potentially useful not just to provide evidence in the event of an accident, but also to record the kind of idiotic behaviour by other road users that deserves to be reported.
