The 1990s modern classics that are fast disappearing from Britain's roads 22 Dec 2017 (News)
There are several reasons, but one of the biggest is the 2009-10 scrappage scheme. Here the Government encouraged people to trade-in cars more than ten years old for £2000 off a new car – a discount that you could’ve got by haggling. In total, 392,227 future classics were taken off the road because of the scrappage scheme. -

A Grand Monday: Ford Scorpio Ultima 24 Jul 2017 (News)
s=carAndClassic&id=C887328" target="_blank" title="Ford Scorpio Ultima £995">All of which make a 38,000-mile from new survivor such as this a real rarity these days. Twenty-two years old, and having been owned for more than 20 years by its first (private) owner, this is a car that deserves to be preserved. On the downside, it's only a 2.0-litre (if it were a Cosworth-developed V6, you wouldn't be reading this as we'd have already bought it) and it has a few cosmetic defects, but on the plus side, it's in range-topping Ultima spec, with air-con, auto 'box, cruise control, reverse parking sensors and a premium sound system, though, oddly, no leather - it was a free of charge delete option on the Ultima. -
1972 Toyota Crown Custom returned to the road 20 Feb 2017 (News)
The last time Nick Garrick sat in the back of this 1972 Toyota Crown he was 12 years old and his grandparents, Percy and Ethel Cole, were in the front seats. Nick recalls that the Toyota was something of a spontaneous purchase for his grandfather, Percy. Dissatisfied with a similar model from a British manufacturer, Mr. -
A Grand Monday: Volvo 340 18 Jul 2016 (News)
Consequently, solid, unmolested 340s are now rare old beasts. This 1987 Volvo 340 1.7-litre , then, is a rarity. -
Skoda Fabia vRS (2010-) 19 Jun 2016 (News)
The five-speed manual in the original Octavia vRS seems prehistoric in comparison. The DSG is a sophisticated system but it’s never quite as fun or as involving as a good old manual. That said, the changes are so quick it means you can focus on the handling and steering without worrying about the gears too much. What is odd is that the similar aged SEAT Ibiza FR was available with the 2.0 TDI engine with 143PS and a six-speed manual. -

The former Bomber Training Station is also home to more than 30 businesses, employers and experts, all specialising in classic and vintage cars and their restoration and preservation. Many of the buildings at Bicester Heritage are now being reused for their original purposes, with vintage Bentley specialist Kingsbury Racing fitting engines to Bentleys in the old engine fitting shop and Classic Oils storing and selling heritage oils from the RAF’s lubricant store. -
Busy Auction at Blackbushe Today 3 Dec 2003 (News)
But with a mere 5,000 miles under its wheels it was a bargain to whoever got it for £15,000; a cool £5,000 under list. It was a day to buy three year old 20k – 30k Omega 2.5 CDX autos. Four 2000X regers sold for between £6,100 and £6,600. A lot of motor for the money. Some surprising cars were way behind book, such as a 39k mile 2001X facelift Mercedes SLK 200K auto in silver, sold for £15,300, a 20k mile 52 reg B6 Audi A4 2.4 Avant Sport, sold for £14,700 (apparently they’re a bit juicy), and a new shape 19k mile 2001/51 Lotus Elise, gone for £14,950. -
New KIA Shuma II, from just £8,995 25 Feb 2002 (News)
KIA has relaunched its Shuma 5-door hatchback as the new look Shuma II with a new interior and with prices from just £8,995 (the same as Citroen's current price for the Xsara 1.4LX with a/c). The size of the cars is similar to that of the Mitsubishi Carisma, Skoda Octavia and old Vauxhall Vectra, so it's longer than a Focus, but smaller than a Mondeo. £8,995 buys the 1.6L, which has the sweeter of the two engines on offer. -
Five Grand Friday: Suzuki Swift Sport 28 Aug 2015 (News)
On a small car like this it's important to check for any parking dings on the bumpers or doors, but this Swift looks very tidy. Similarly have a good look at the alloys. With relatively big wheels for a small car, it's all too easy to kerb them. -
Top Car End of Year Clearance Today 9 Dec 2002 (News)
That was the last Top Car of the Year at Blackbushe. Next Top Car sale is Monday 6th January. But still hang on in there for the fleet and finance sales. Though some end of year new car discounts are making used cars look dear right now, short supply will push used prices back up again in the new year, so anything bought well this month is almost bound to be worth more next month. -
Auction Prices Very Slightly Down Today 8 Dec 2006 (News)
BCA reports that in November 2006, auction prices for the three-year-old, 60,000-mile 'fleet' cars averaged £6,524 - down just £57 on October’s figure, but up £162 against the same month last year. In 2005, the fall between October and November was a £150. -
Bentleys dominate Baltic Classic Rally 13 Jun 2017 (News)
Rene said, ‘Along with winning, the best thing about being on the rally was meeting old friends and making new ones. We will come back next time to defend the victory - in an even faster car.’ A special ‘Spirit of the Rally’ award was presented to the well liked and well travelled crew of Charles and Nellie Bishop with their Vauxhall 30/98. -
505,000 Mile Combo 10 Sep 2008 (News)
Van drivers have a reputation for racking up more miles than most, but in Nigel Weaver’s case the last half a million have all been in the same vehicle. The 53-year old courier from Maidenhead, Berks, bought his Vauxhall Combo new from Burnham Garage in Slough in 2001, just as the model was making its debut. Seven years later, after averaging over 75,000 miles a year, Nigel’s Combo has just clocked up its first 500,000 miles, all on the original engine. -

Honest John's Motoring Agony Column: 23-5-2015 23 May 2015 (News)
The Privacy Phone is missing. The handbook clearly states this as being “provided” with the car. Initially the dealer said that I should not expect to find this in a 10-year old car, but their last statement says “the car was not advertised or sold with the benefit of a Privacy Phone being fitted” and that it was my responsibility to satisfy myself with the condition and specification of the car prior to taking delivery. -
Foreign entries rev up for Croft Nostalgia Weekend 1 Aug 2011 (News)
But they will have to beat a number of local racers all eager to shine in front of their home crowd – among them 18-year-old James Buckton from Harrogate in his historic Elden Formula Ford, York’s Robert Rook and Selby’s Jim Clark in their Ford Lotus Cortinas, fellow saloon car racer Andy Yool from Barrow-in-Furness in his Ford Anglia, Workington’s Robert Gates in his evocative E-type Jaguar and Whitley Bay’s Richard Evans in his sensational March Formula 2 car. -
Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 11-4-2015 11 Apr 2015 (News)
This garage suggests the car suffers from condensation and this is quite normal. Am I being fobbed off? Can the dealer more local to me refuse to fix the car? I didn't expect to start so many trips in my ‘new’ car by needing to dry off the windscreen. TW, via email There must be a leak admitting cold, damp air to the interior of the car. -
Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 4 Apr 2015 (News)
Noted 2-12-2013: Report of MoT Advisory for rusting brake pipes on 45k mile November 2007/57 C220 CDI. Car then also 6 years old. You should press MB to pay, saying it is a safety concern. Crash cams An in-car camera seems to me to be potentially useful not just to provide evidence in the event of an accident, but also to record the kind of idiotic behaviour by other road users that deserves to be reported.
