  • Most common tyre sizes 21 Jan 2010 (Forum)
And presumably it changes over the course of time, and varies from country to country - so what about comparative lists for 5 or 10 years ago, and for, say, the USA, Germany, and France?
  • Honda Legend (2006 - ) - Suggestions for a car to spoil myself with 30 Jul 2009 (Forum)
I've been looking at replacing my sensible family car with a 2 year old (or thereabouts) luxury car - its my version of a 40year old sports car but I'm too sensible for my own good - I've looked at all of the obvious things and am starting to scratch my head - I've got £20k to spend but can push it. I drive 20 miles each day to work through city traffic and have the occasional long drive to France on holiday. My insurance is really low and I don't really car about road tax etc. I seem to be favouring the Honda Legend but am easily swayed by suggestions. I would be really grateful for any thoughts!
  • Classic Gear programme 3 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Another managed to talk a lot but say nothing of interest despite driving an Aston Martin DB5 on winding mountain roads in the south of France - this culminated in her having a 'race' with a DBS which seemed to be run at about 50 mph with fast editing used to make it seem quicker. Most of the rest of the hour-long programme was taken up with repeated promotions for what was coming up later.
  • New long term car 7 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I've just returned from living in France where I've been running an Opel Omega 2.5 diesel for the last 8 years - it's been stunningly reliable - over 300k km with only oil and filters (lots of them). I'm going to be doing something like 600 miles/week so will need something comfortable yet relatively economical.
  • DIY- Interest, Summer Servicing completed (you?) 16 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Must have saved quite a bit in labour, servicing and repairs on our cars so far this year, which will pay for the hotels and meals in France later. But its not that really, more the enjoyment of doing it and knowing its been done thoroughly. If you are into DIY, how about you? what have you done and anything still outstanding? Regards
  • Cling film the car? 18 Jun 2008 (Forum)
OK , maybe one of my more silly ideas. Shortly going to be driving to South of France and back, a distance of several thousand miles. Now I see advertised in car magazines, "clear shields" for exotic cars that are transparent, look just like a sheet of cling film (obviously thicker and stronger) but protect the car.
  • Almost 80mpg, getting nearer as engine loosens 22 May 2008 (Forum)
That`s better than the 78mpg of a few months back on a return trip of 120 miles to the East coast. Went to France last week ( drivng for speed and not economy) and covered 800+ miles at just under an indicated 80MPH and obtained 61.6mpg. The Multijet engine in the Mk2b van is nicely loosened up at 20,000 and is getting better all the time on fuel consumption.
  • Mazda Mazda 6 (2002 - 2007) - Rear bumper damage 17 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I have over the last year put a couple of deepish gouges on the rear bumber taking things out due to the low bumper on the car but i have just come back from France and somene has put a 12" scratch down the side of my rear bumper, but to cap it all i have reversed into a sign today and scratched all down the other side of the rear bumper. The only good thing is all off the scratches some down to the black underneath are on the rear bumper.
  • 2 things, Insurance and Sat Nav 7 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Has anyone got had any great experience using these two, note I say great as not to fall foul of any censors 8-) Also thinking of buying a sat nav, do not want to spend a fortune as I do about 7K private and about 3K work miles. Really wanted as the missus and kids are of to the South of France for the summer and has said she wold like to travel around a bit so has suggested SatNav, any recommendations to include 'safety Camera Alerts' Ta
  • Accord Diesel Service 17 Feb 2007 (Forum)
When my Omega was serviced I was always asked for the key for the wheels. I haven't done a huge mileage - 17,000 - and that has been long journeys, mainly to France each year. I won't use the car for just a couple of miles. Should I pay extra for an emissions service and a brake check with the wheels removed?
  • Car "searched" before boarding ferry 13 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Went over to France two days ago from Poole. After checking in and before loading all cars were stopped and searched by Securitas badged staff, ostensiby for weapons. The old boy who "did" me couldn't have found a can of beans in Tesco.
  • UK Roadworks and Speed Restrictions 30 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I have just returned from an epic 2,200 mile tour of Southern France, Andorra and part of Spain. In all this mileage I saw virtually NO roadworks (other than some minor streetworks in Calais town centre). This begs the question, how can the continentals do such a good job of making their arterial motor route so clear of cones and restrictions, whilst we in the UK are plagued with seemingly non-sensical delays, speed restrictions and phantom roadworks where nothing much seems to be going on in them ?
  • Thinking of Changing My Car 7 Nov 2005 (Forum)
The electric tailgate is still giving problems and it's a day's journey to take it to the dealer - that's a slight exaggeration - but dealers are few and far apart. In France it's 45 miles to the nearest Honda dealer. Granted, the problems have not been major, but they are niggly. Coupled with the exorbitant charges for services - almost £200 for the first service, which was basically an oil change.
  • Boulogne 5 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Off to the sun soon on the 'vomit comet' as some have called the speedferries super cat - but hell I travel well and how sick can a wife get in 45 minutes? I've not been to Boulogne before so any tips welcome. I have been driving in France for 20 odd years so I don't need the sort of 'Don't forget the red triangle' or 'keep on the right' type of advice but any tips on how to avoid getting lost in Boulogne appreciated especially if combined with where to get that all important tank topping fill of fuel before returning to the UK.
  • What do we import from Latvia?? 24 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Odd question I know but went to Belgium/France this weekend to stock up on cigars and wine and on the way back there were an inredible number of foreign trucks on the motorway. In fact from M25/M1 junction today we got to Milton Keynes before we spotted an English truck (McFarlane of Leeds) among the hundred or so foreign trucks.
  • Subaru Forester - Missing! 26 Nov 2004 (Forum)
However, if want to pull away fast (not that I really want to drive like that)feels ok. On descent of a slope, barely touching pedal, feels like it is missing too. Went to France recently, drove back from Brittany. On motorway car was fine at cruising speed. However, when at toll booths and pulling away, felt like it was missing until got back to cruise speed again. Only done 3 thou in car since June.
  • Increased Submarining Risk with Car Rugs 7 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Hi, If that doesn't win me the strangest title prize nothing will. We are about to go to France, driving down to the Dordogne over two days. Our 8 year old will be in his booster seat (standard Britax model) in the back. In the past we've put it on a car rug so we can just shake out all the bits at the end of the journey.
  • Shock absorbers 19 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Would the job be as good (workmanship and quality of part) 4. Can I get just the one done or should I do the pair? 5. I'm off to la Belle France next week for a couple of weeks - would it be cheaper to go to a Euromaster place there? Thanks in advance -- Terry
  • cheapest motoring I ever heard of. 7 Apr 2004 (Forum)
He reckoned the engines were about unbreakable and any bodywork welding was done with baked bean tin metal, apparently this was the right gauge. In the holidays he would tour France going into the alps- and probably causing huge tailbacks-but the cars served him well for decades. Anyone beat that for cheap motoring?
  • wot, another omega question! 28 Sep 2003 (Forum)
My local garage says wider tyres (mine are 225s) are more susceptable (is that spelt right?) to this. When I was driving in France the other week the effect was (almost) unnoticeable. Driving on the right meant the camber was the opposite way so perhaps that is the answer. Has anyone got a full answer? Regards Scotty
