  • Nissan X trail 2.2 dci 2007 - misfiring, lack of power 24 Nov 2012 (Forum)
The symptoms are similar to others on the forum, but not exactly the same. The car runs fine around town, no problems. On the motorway, if the throttle openning is kept low, it will reach about 70mph in 6thgear, but any attempt to increase the throttle openning results in complete loss of power.

  • 1998 Honda Civic 1.6 SE - engine warning light 6 Aug 2012 (Forum)
30 miles later the warning light came on again. 2 further cats, and 2 lambda filters later, and the error persists.  Honda have run a diagnostic, and been unable to help further.  Now it has failed the MOT, on emissions.  The car has done 110,000 and has been a great car to drive.  I'd be sorry to have to scrap it.
  • VW Golf Blue Motion - Wrong fuel 23 Jul 2012 (Forum)
My friend, without realising it, inadvertantly put petrol into her diesel car.  After 10 miles it was not running properly. She called the RAC.  The RAC man came to look at the car and said it was a fuel pump problem and that she should drive it to the VW dealer 12 miles away.  The following day the dealer called her to say that petrol was in the system and that it will cost £4,800 (including £4,000 for parts) to repair it.
  • 406 coolant problem - head gasket leak? 19 Jun 2012 (Forum)
No visible signs of leaks when stationery, radiator look okay. Did a simple recommended test - engine running, expansion tank cap off, can see small bubbles in the coolant expansion tank. Garage has performed a pressure test and has said "makings of cylinder head gasket leak". Cost to fix £400-£500. Are they correct or could it be just a unseen leaking pipe, leaky temperature sensor, etc?
  • petrol into diesel car 28 May 2012 (Forum)
Can anybody point out a succinct source of information on the effects of accidentally running a diesel engine on petrol. I bought a Morris Minor MM side valve many years ago in Zambia as a project.  Not only were the speedo mileometer gears worn out (didn't work) so I had no idea of the mileage, but the car emitted so much blue smoke from the exhaust that following drivers couldn't see beyond.
  • Nissan Micra K11 - MoT emissions failure 12 May 2012 (Forum)
Just failed MOT emissions test, due to high CO at idle. A complete surprise as the car seems to run well. Garage hooked up a code reader. No faults reported. Garage changed spark plugs, no improvement. Problem identified as caused by "shagged" timing chain. Repair could be uneconomical.
  • Escort 1.6 16v 2000 - A Couple Of problems 7 May 2012 (Forum)
Ive recently purchased a cheapy car, a 2000my Escort 1.6 16v 85k on clock on generally good condition, for £250!   Anyway, its runs lovely apart from 2 things, firstly theres a rattling sound coming from the front wheel, drivers side i think which is especially loud going over rough road surfaces but it stops when i put my foot on the break, even gently, what could this be?
  • any - nanual stop/start-goosed Tom Tom 19 Mar 2012 (Forum)
With a recent thread about the merit (or lack thereof) of automatic stop/start, I decided to run a manual version to see if it made a significant financial difference. I think it might have-a very negative one. My Tom tom has suddenly stopped charging. Upon closer inspection, the fuse in the charging cable had blown-as has the fuse in the 12V socket.
  • Renault Megane dymanique 2005 - Engine difficult to start when cold 15 Mar 2012 (Forum)
First thing in the morninig the engine engine coughs and splutters a few times before it fires up. The when you set off it tends judder a few times. Once running it is fine. All the pencil coils are ok and when i did a recent service one of the plugs was oiled up. This as been going on for a while now and have noticded that the same plug has been oiled up before.
  • X type V6 petrol - Jaguar oil filter 20 Feb 2012 (Forum)
The glue seems to join these two metal pieces and will be covered with hot oil while the engine is running. This is my first Jaguar and I have not noticed this feature on any other makes of filter for other cars. My concern is whether any of the glue will melt into the oil and block oilways or is this not possible.
  • Nissan Micra K12 - idle problem 13 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Anyhow £500  later the problem still exists but only when the engine is  cold on start up. Once the engine has warmed it runs  without any problem. Any help out there
  • Chrysler Voyager SE - Engine losing power while driving 31 Jan 2012 (Forum)
Usually started again after 10 minutes to an hour.  Symptoms of fuel starvation, but garage could not find problem, despite running Chrysler diagnostics.  Eventually one garage, which had experience of this model of this age, correctly identified the fault as the rev counter on the crank shaft (and possibly cam shaft too) being faulty and sending wrong information to the fuel injector.

  • Audi A3 - Short commute in a diesel - best options 10 Jan 2012 (Forum)
Winter mornings and evenings mean a heavy load on the battery etc. but I'm more concerned about the long term damage this is causing. I try to take the car on a longer run at the weekends or indeed a little bit of Italian tune up by revving the car quite highly once towards the end of the commute. Up for any suggestions - many thanks P

  • BMW 120d sport, step auto - Turbo actuator failure 23 Nov 2011 (Forum)
My car suffers almost total power loss once up to running temperature but usually performs normally when cold. Diagnosis from a Bosch specialist says the turbo actuator has failed and that a new turbo is the answer. As several versions of turbo are fitted to this model, the only way to find out which part is needed is to remove the old turbo (the part number is inside).
  • vw polo genesis 1993 - emissions bit high 7 Nov 2011 (Forum)
After visiting my usuall mechanic we found the emmisions a bit on the high side, but as this model is usually factory set, my mechanic wasnt sure how to adjust it or what to do to improve the matter. He cannot run a diagnostic on it as its too old. On the whole its a great little car and has caused me very lttle trouble. It has done 123k miles and still whizzes around fine. I would like to keep it as long as poss.
  • VW Golf Plus - heating and cooling the interior 15 Oct 2011 (Forum)
Had our Golf Plus from new, now nearly six years old, regularly serviced at main dealer or accredited garage and is running very well.   Only problem - the heater/cooler switches off after 28 - 30 minutes, only works when blower switch manipulated and eventually on a long journey stops working altogether.   Two VW accredited garages tested and said all was well.
  • 53 toyota avensis 2L T spirit - very hot metallic smell 13 Sep 2011 (Forum)
Hi, after running my car for only a few miles, it smells very hot when i get out of the car. It's not steam, it's a hot metallic smell. I recently had a new radiator fitted, no difference! the garage then suggested a new thermostat, again no difference except the temp guage inside the car takes much longer to reach optimum working temp (about 10 miles).
