Citroen DS3, Abarth 500, Seat Leon SC - Difficult choices 28 Apr 2014 (Forum)
Its darn difficult to choose a new car these days. We're currently looking to replace our "fun" ride, a Mini Cooper S, which after 7 years is starting to have too many (minor) problems cropping up to stay. We've been looking at the sector and settled on a choice of 3 models (not necessarily the obvious ones). -
Main Dealer network set to collapse?? 14 Sep 2009 (Forum)
My brother bough a mid sized, brand new car the other day - models still in stock. However, small ars, fiesta size, ie 'super minis out of stock. Dealers are worried that they will have a massive lull iv sales is scheme is not topped up ad may will lose jobs directly, and many more will loose jobs indirectly. I read in the media that Hyundai/Kia/etc doing very well. -
Useless gadgets 15 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Eclipsing all this tat is the LED clock, proudly adorning the (mock walnut) gearknob of a schoolmate's 850 Mini (He had a Saturday job in a motor accessory store and unlimited scope for accessorising his car!) It had the all-important stopwatch with lap timer and even a tiny one millionth candlepower backlight. -
Bangernomics - What are the rules of engagement? 4 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Reliability is really important to me, much more than the brand of car but I know beggers can;t be choosers at this end of the market. I also have a small child so I?d rather not have a mini sized car, focus/mondeo sized preferred. So guys, I?d really like your help with some simple questions, Where to buy? Auction, Ebay, Autotrader, local rag What to buy? Petrol/Diesel, I?m thinking Japanese for the reliability side of things How much? -
BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 00 318 CI ticking sound from tappet area. 14 Apr 2009 (Forum)
I have been stupid.i have swapped a 1 1/2 yr old mini cooper which was in perfect condition.except for an annoying rattly dashboard ..for a 5 yr old BMW 318 ci..and now i have a big problem. when i start the car from cold..ie after an all night stop. the car starts and sounds like a true BMW.but after the oil has warmed up.it starts to have a clicking sound from around the tappets area. -
HJ approves of daylight fog lights!!!! (confused) 3 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Now, DRLs are completely different and that is what the EC directive for 2011 is about, so I don't know why HJ is confusing the two. Newer cars (Fiat 500, Mini, Ford Galaxy) have these DRLs (or similar low powered lights mounted in front fog-light like positions) and those are indeed not distracting to other drivers. As for the (unfortunately not that uncommon) combination of sidelights and front fogs, I thought that defied logic, but HJ seems to suggest otherwise since his reply indicated that in his mind front-fogs = DRLs, and DRLs are perfectly acceptable (and indeed wise). -
A cyclists rant 29 Aug 2008 (Forum)
What really rags me are car drivers who still insist on overtaking me when I'm almost in the middle of the road with my arm stuck out signalling to turn right on a mini roundabout. What part of a right turn signal don't they get? How far over would I have to be before the idiot car driver would decide to stop trying to pass me and wait until I'd turned? What thought process (assuming said driver has a brain) is being played out which makes that person think its ok for them to pass me whilst I'm signalling? -
Speed humps, the council and my front bumper. 8 Aug 2008 (Forum)
When they were first put there i called the council and asked about it and was told they were checked and were the correct height. I cannot believe a standard vehicle cannot pass over them without being damaged. Its a mini cooper S, which is not exactly a rare car! The piece on the car is below the front bumper, i guess its called a splitter or valance???????????????? I want to have this replaced as its all scraped and scuffed and imo the council should pay to replace this and come and look at the humps and adjust them??? -
Had a dodge down the auction... 4 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Both around two years old, 1.8 turbos, leather, so good spec, £10K anybody? Similar age drop-top BMWs and Mercs were making £5K more. Had no idea what an 07 Mini Cooper would make - £10K exactly is the answer. I over-priced a couple of Honda Accord diesel estates, thought Hondas were meant to hold their price. There was an 06 Audi hatch with nearly 100,000 miles on the clock - some people must live in their cars. -
What fuel consumption gaffs/efforts have you made 1 Apr 2008 (Forum)
What fuel consumption efforts and mistakes, including purchase, have you made over the years?. 1) 1967 Mini van, fuel consumption (best) 38mpg on east coast run. Fitted a Mangoletsi ? Manifold modifier, which basically just seemed to do nothing except cut performance as it reduced inlet manifold diameter. -
Street parking - right of access? 29 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Even so, it's so small you would not get a modern car of any description in there. That includes an old style Mini. The space in front of the shed doors was previously designated as a disabled space by the council, and as such was generally repsected by other car owners. It was then reverted to general parking (i.e. non-disabled) about 4 years ago. -
Stereotype bites the dust... 7 Nov 2006 (Forum)
I consider myself to be a rapid but safe driver (don?t we all?) and used to rally and autocross a mini, but I didn?t get within three hundred yards of that Metro. The lady used the road superbly, taking an economical line through the corners, braking early and accelerating out. By the time we joined the main road my ego had shrunk to the size of a peanut..I eventually convinced myself she must have been an ex. professional rally driver. -
Transit Tourneo 8 May 2006 (Forum)
I hope you guys can give me some advice. I have a '53 plate tranny tourneo mini bus 2.0 tdci, its a taxi, it has 165k miles on the clock. 11 months since I had a replacement dmf flywheel and clutch fitted, without checking the invoice i think it had 125k on the clock then. Since then, every now and again the engine cuts out when you ask it for power changing from 2nd to 3rd gear, such as accelerating away up hill both empty and loaded to the gunnels. -
Main Dealers - Don't you just love 'em 27 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Main Dealers - don't you just love 'em? - jacks Thu 27 Apr 06 10:06 My wife has a 3 year old MINI bought new from BMW dealer. She's just received a letter from the dealer inviting her to bring in the car for a "Routine Maintainance Check" for only £39.99. I rang the dealer to find out what this was about as the car has a "5 year servicing for £100 up front deal" and has only been serviced fairly recently anyway. -

What should I buy....help! 25 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Hi everyone, Things are going well at Honda and I have now got myself a very nice Civic as my company car. So to cut a long story short, I sold my Mini last week and am in need of a car to have some fun with as obviously, the Civic is nice, but I cant do anything to it! I cant see the point of buying a Honda - as i drive them every day and I fancy something different as a consiquence. -
Horrible Cars 24 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Even then, there were several junctions where, after waiting patiently to pull out, I gracefully then started reversing back up the road. The mini-roundabouts were fun too. The clutch is so high that I have to practically wrap my left leg around my neck to avoid keeping my foot pressed on it after changing gear. As for the steering - well some people have said they had trouble with the Astra's steering, but not me. -
The final raceday 5 Sep 2001 (Forum)
The track is closing due to road building. A full 5 hours of bangers and other sundry offerings (stocks, hot rods, minis). The minis were interesting, the 12 year old noted that the youngest racers were his age. The track was dry so the stocks (1300 RWD Escorts with steel cages) spent most of the races pointing every way bar straight, also a few collisions....which was invigorating. -
Ford Focus 2002 1.6 pet - Ford focus 02 - To change cat or not? 7 Apr 2014 (Forum)
Car is at 100,000 miles Had an emisions test done which showed the lambda at 1.01 which is an MOT pass Since I've had the car i've replaced: cam belt, speed sensor, air/fuel filters Cleaned the idle control valve Drives OK, MPG and power not as good as I would expect but don't really have much experience as my other car is a tuned up mini! Makes a slightly unusual sound but not like its blowing, also I can cover the exhaust with a rag quite easily. Also, the headlights flicker very slightly when the revs come down to idle, but otherwise I don't know of any other problems.
