  • Pug 306 1.8 8v XU7 Head gasket failure? 20 Feb 2006 (Forum)
My wife drives 1995 XU7 1.8 8v Sedan that has given no problems to date (great car) but I decided to drive it to the airport to give it a decent motorway run yesterday. Starting it up from overnight cold it ran on three cylinders for a second or so as it staggered up to idle, and then cleared on to all four. Normally it leaps up to 1300RPM and then drops to 1050 RPM before then dropping back to 850RPM over time.
  • Freelander TD4 opinions? 1 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Now the wife wants to change the Clio for a 5 door Freelander, not a new one she says - phew - one the we would not worry about filling to the brim for a tip run. Ok, I do not know too much about Freelanders, I know I dont want a 1.8 K-Series one or a 2.5V6 for that matter, I also know the early (Rover 'L' Series?) diesels were very rough so it would have to be a BMW engined TD4, so when were these launched, I guess 2000?
  • Tales of motoring stupidity 20 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Now the traffic that was travelling in the same direction as the police car (and me) pulled over to the side of the road to let it past, leaving the other side of the road clear. Until this moronic woman doing the school run in the other direction decided that the best course of action would be to stop completely adjascent to these cars, thereby blocking the road. If she had just kept going as normal on her journey she would have been clear of the stopped cars before the police car had needed to pass, not holding the rozzers up at all.
  • North West BR Meet Up. Confirmation 18 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Venue = The Waterside 7:30pm If you're going to sat nav it, Garswood Old Road East Lancs Road St Helens Merseyside WA11 9AB Directions: If you're coming off the M6, take jct 23 onto the Lancs. You'll go through one set of lights. Keep following it and you'll approach a bridge running over it. after a set of lights. Then some more traffic lights. Turn right at those lights then right again into the carpark (It will be obvious where it is from the lights - there's a Premier Lodge attached to it) If you're coming from the other direction then you'll go past a Chinese Restaurant called "Chung Ku".
  • PDA and Sat Nav combinations 15 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I am looking for a pda which will run sat nav, I guess Tomtom is the most popular and well known. I have narrowed down my choice to an XDA 2S (with the pull out mini keyboard)or an Ipaq, the 4700 looks well specified. I would like to use this set up with a bluetooth gps receiver to cut down on the wires etc.
  • Another 'Caring Sharing' Honda dealer 13 Dec 2005 (Forum)
A colleague took her Type R in for a service on Friday at her local main Honda dealer. She had the day off and received a call to say her car was ready, but on the test run had received a 'minor' knock. They told her to keep the courtesy car and they would call her when her car was ready! She said she wanted to come down and see it but was told there was no need as the car would be sorted - keep the courtesy car etc.
  • FAO Dave N - Audi A4 TDi AC Fault 16 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Compressor clutch activates, engine note loads down slightly (indicating effort is being taken by the compressor). Condensor fan runs. There is no temperature difference on either the high side or low side pipes - both remain at a static ambient temperature. I have system pressure/ambient/cabin temperature readings on my desk at work, I'll post them to this thread as soon as I can.
  • replacing a faulty Nissan Primera radio 30 Oct 2005 (Forum)
I recently purchased a second hand Nissan Primera GX - 1998 model. It runs great with only 50K on the clock. The problem I have is regarding the car radio. The LCD has completely failed. It still lights up OK but there is no text visible in the display. I can use the radio fine but have no idea what radio stations I am listening to.
  • BMW 528 exhaust / cat hot tick problem 8 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Any one else come across this exhaust hot tick, I know most cars have some exhaust and engine hot tick, but being able to hear it over the engine whilst it is running seems unusual to me?
  • Which will depreciate the most? 7 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I have been struggling with this for a long time and have come up with a short list (ok, the list for today!) Im most interested in the amount of money i stand to lose on each one (the actual running costs are not factored into this really). Most of the cars are from a well known west london car supermarket, but im using these for comparison. After 2 years and about 50k miles, which will have lost the most money?
  • Megane Scenic - Head Gasket or not ? 1 Sep 2005 (Forum)
So today I visited a local (reputable) garage and managed to get a 'block' test done on it this morning (and that doesn't point to it being the head gasket either). Tomorrow we're going to bypass the cooler / flush the system & run it for a week or two. Any problems with that ? Any other suggestions ? Likely price of a new oil cooler ? Any help / advice would be great in this worrying time (head gasket >£500+, Oil Cooler = much cheaper) Thanks Mark
  • Honda IMA 23 Aug 2005 (Forum)
(Remember to depress clutch or it won't start for some American reason), silent tick over (ad to check rev counter to confirm it was running), Gear change is the best around that I've driven of late - the charge/assist graphics are a bit distracting at first and the tyres are a bit noisy (compared to the BMW) it pulls well in all gears, I found the cliamte fans a bit noisy.
  • Fiesta 1.6S - Grand Theft Auto! 7 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I could stop telling myself "I'd like a new car but why spend all that money when my Fiesta's reliable, economical and cheap to run?". I now had an excuse to buy Autotrader! Alas, my joy was not to last - the police found my car earlier today, and it's in a worse state than it was before. The locks have been screwdriver'd, the ignition's been bypassed, there's a huge dent in the side, the stereo's gone and the driver's seat has been adjusted into a position I don't find comfortable.
  • Mitsubishi Galant - suspension noises 3 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I recently had new brake disks and pads on all wheels (don't know if this is related or not) but since then it seems to have developed a sort-of clonk or rattle when going over small bumps at lowish speeds. The problem seems to occur on tiny bumps (like running over a catseye or a small rut or pothole) when doing urban speeds - 30mph or thereabouts. At higher speeds and on bigger bumps it doesn't seem to be a problem - the suspension does its job with no fuss.
  • Stag: indicators no longer flash 9 Jul 2005 (Forum)
The only other problem with the car is that the alternator dash-light has been lighting up recently when the engine is running (and not lighting up before cranking) - I have a new alternator on the way, just haven't received it yet. If the alternator is only partially charging the battery, and the battery is therefore weak does that manifest itself in a non-flashing flasher (amongst other things) ?
  • Here we go...... 7 Jul 2005 (Forum)
The Congestion Charge is a good idea, or at least it would have been if it had been backed by an investment in public transport and out of town, secure, car parking. It should actually be about £50 with exemptions for obvious cases. Public transport should run for 24 hours so that people can get in an out of work at anytime. Truck drivers (truckies) should realise that they are not there to police traffic merging and generally don't understand how it works anyway.
  • Large 4x4s again! 23 May 2005 (Forum)
The reason why many people, especially women, drive these large 4x4s is that they are doing the school run, so 'need' to transport loads of children at one time, they like to sit high to see over the other traffic and these cars have presence. They are usually driven badly, have lots of scrapes and bangs on them and make other people really irate.
  • Renault's insane design 12 May 2005 (Forum)
Anyway, the car wouldn't start and after several hours with a 'scope and meter I eventually found a broken wire running from the crank sensor to the ECU. The wires are really thin and the plastic had gone hard and fractured - this on a car only four years old! Anyway I test drove the car and noticed that it was missing slightly and the gearbox was crunching a bit due to 'clutch drag'.
  • Caveat Emptor 11 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I know that walls have ears, but at this auction they must have had voices as well, and been bidding to the auctioneer, because quite a few of the cars were re-run around again!!
  • Mazda 323 Timing Belt 6 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Hi all, Hope someone out there can give me some advice! I own a Mazda 323F Shiraz on a 99/T plate. It's running fine, no problems, I took it in recently for the 54k service (even though it's only done 46k) and I was told that the timing belt/tensioner change happens upon certain mileages with Mazda, rather than over a timescale.
