  • Instant high revs on start up = damage? 12 Jan 2004 (Forum)
but the tappet rattle was truly, truly, horrible until the hydraulic lifters pumped up, and I dread to think about piston and bore contact and a turbo running quickly up to boost speed. I assume that the crank, journals, and other bearings would still have been nice and oily, but in the experience of those who know, is this brutal treatment likely to have damaged anything that will manifest in many miles time?
  • Derv AND 2 star mix up 2 Jan 2004 (Forum)
The local supermarket staff are getting some stick in the press and the PO reply was \"....and we will be talking to all the staff about it\" Is 20 per cent the right figure? Not a hint of goodwill to those just inconvenienced or worried about engine not running correctly. A bit disappointing from such a large company when dealing in the heart of the stockbroker belt.
  • My worst motoring moment 16 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Even if I had seen it at the time, I could never have contemplated claiming against the dog owners. It couldn't have been worse if I had run over one of their kids....... which I suppose is what I did, in a sense.
  • Advice for my Dad please! 18 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Clutch was done last year (he tends to ride the clutch). I thought that buying a new car, especially since his licence runs out next year and he's not sure he will renew it, would be a waste of money, and for the price he was thinking about (£2000) he would end up putting profit in someone's pocket for something not as good as his old 309.
  • honda prelude 2.2vtech (import) 13 Nov 2003 (Forum)
afternoon all, this is my first post so please excuse any small lapses in protocol; i have a 2.2vtech prelude auto, which has 86000kms on the clock, i have had it 5yrs and until now never had a single fault with it.the problem that is starting to appear is, even when the car has been running all day, if i stop at a petrol station,fill-up,and go to the cash point to pay for the petrol, and buy a bag of sweets, when i try to re-start it,the engine will spin over but not fire, this ia often accompanied by the car giving what i can only describe as a "small jump" and the sports-mode indicater light on the dashboard starts flashing.the car will always start again after 2-5mins once this light has stopped flashing, it is only happening once in a blue-moon at the moment, but i would like to get it seen to as soon as poss. thanks for any help/suggestions offered.
  • Tachograph Needed for Trooper...? 8 Nov 2003 (Forum)
And are they cable-driven, or can an electronic sensor be fitted on, say, the prop shaft to give a signal, and then have the speedo element caliburated? Or even better, can one run off a GPS and calculate speed that way? This is barminess. How do farmers taking livestock to more distant markets handle this? More in the breach than in the observance? Comments welcome. The "4x4 and trailer" solution was so good for me, but it looks like I need to find an alternative.
  • Pug 306 Head Gasket? 4 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I bought a peugeot a M reg 306 xldt with 110K on the clock from auction on Friday night for my wife & have been running through the car for 2 days trying to fix obvious problems. I know one of the glow plugs needs replacing, so that will be done shortly. What I'm worried about the head gasket. First indication is that one of the fans come on from shortly after startup .I'm fitting a new switch tonight with an anti-freeze change to try sort that out.
  • Piston Rings - VAG 2.0 petrol engine 28 Oct 2003 (Forum)
The engine is the 8v 115bhp rather than the uprated 130bhp unit now found in the Passat etc. Given that they want the car for three days I'm thankful for the warranty! Does the car need 'running in' after new piston rings? Should the oil be changed before the next scheduled change in 10k miles? Have we just been unlucky with our engine or has anybody else had VAG cough up for new piston rings?
  • Subaru Legacy Report 26 Oct 2003 (Forum)
The only other trouble was caused during servicing, the dealer said that it was a broken wire, I think that it was a connection left loose. Impressions : It runs so smoothly that my wife falls asleep every trip, in fact, the engine is so smooth that I often forget to change gear. It is marvellous in ice & snow.
  • I have a question. Volume 13 13 Oct 2003 (Forum)
When the topic page eventually comes on screen it is immediately followed by a dialogue box headed Microsoft Internet Explorer and the legend " Your current security settings prohibit running Active X controls on this page. As a result the page may not display correctly. Followed is the squark of a crow. I can get rid by clicking on the TRH X. Going to a new topic the same happens.
  • Missing my MV6 .......... 10 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Well, due to doing a significantly increased work mileage I opted to take a company car again and have a Honda Accord 2.4. The car is simply stunning, reliable with performance that (now its nicely run in) that is on a par with the Omega. Perhaps the top speed is down a bit - but who can use that anyway. I know its a new Honda, but its almost "boringly" efficient and capable in every respect with improved mpg to boot.
  • Max Lorry weights 2 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Now forgive me if I have got this wrong but I thought that there was good information that the last hike in max gvw's did not result in that many fewer vehicles. Recall a survey about average vehicle loads showed most running part full / empty depends on your viewpoint. Of course changes in the rules did allow the greater use on US style trucks instead of the cab overs predominant in Europe and UK. IIRC the most significant effect was the horrendous congestion and cost of uprating hundreds, maybe thousands of bridges now incapable of taking the heavier loads.
  • Road safety advert inaccuracies 23 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Kind of linked to the thread on the "Now you see him, now you see him" road safety ad that has been running recently, i'd just like to point out another road safety ad inaccuracy that really really annoys me. Whilst generally i think the vast majority of road safety ad's are brilliantly done and hard hitting (especially the seatbelt ones btw), there is one concerning the importance of sticking to the 30 limit that has a glaring error in it.
  • Drink Driving Limit - Approximately....? 19 Sep 2003 (Forum)
On another note, i managed to calculate that last friday morning, after a big thursday night out and 3 hours sleep, i was over the limit until 3pm the next afternoon. Is this right? And if so was i running a serious risk in driving to work at 8am that morning, both legally and physically, as i felt 100% sober. Any clarification would be good, especially from the legal people that i know give a lot of welcome advice here.
  • Oil (again) 12 Sep 2003 (Forum)
It appears to be something and nothing. My Harley Service Manual demands semi-synth in its transmission yet I have run it on Pennzoil 80w/90 fossil prior to changing to HD's own semi-synth a few months back and noticed no difference whatsoever (i.e. engaging first from neutral still frightens small dogs and old ladies hehe).
  • I'm sorry to have to say this but... 23 Aug 2003 (Forum)
The car is a very well specified model (leather, climate control, full electrics etc.) but after even a cursory 'inspection' it was evident that the attention to detail was lacking. There was a large and obvious paint 'run' on the o/s rear pillar, very cheap looking and poorly fitted lining in the boot and numerous seams and joints which seemed to be shoddy to say the least. So far as the dealer experience was concerned he told me that the mud flaps he'd ordered weren't fitted and that only 6 months VED was provided rather than the 12 months they'd agreed.
  • Spares pricing. 19 Aug 2003 (Forum)
My local factors mumble about dodgy parts in white boxes and the fact that the mail-order don't have the overheads of a depot in every town plus a fleet of vans to run. If they bury their heads in the sand like this they will find others with their business. Amazon car parts anyone? And what about the car makers? If ??? can knock out these brake calipers (for example) at £52 how much should the dealer reasonably charge... 50% more?
  • Interesting variants from yonder year 5 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Was the technology not good enough to develop and continue, I beleive the car was quite pricey but managed a really high mpg in town. Can anyone else think of other strange variants of run of the mill cars? Possibly the V6 Metro was a bit before it's time but completely out of character to the rest of the range.
  • Solving a friend's Mini 'problem' 16 Jun 2003 (Forum)
over the year he had it, which included a fairly thorough restoration. However, after getting it home and changing the plugs and oil, he found that it was still running a little rougher than he was expecting. It also ran a bit hot. A diagnostic check at Rover found nothing and even a new temperature sensor didn't cure the problem. Then he took it to a specialist for rolling road analysis.
  • Hot and bothered 5 Jun 2003 (Forum)
It then gets stuck in a cycle of heating up and cooling down (as the fan switches on and off) until I'm back on the move. It only takes a couple of minutes to go from normal temperature to the red zone. The car runs fine apart from this, and I suppose I can live with it (until the day the fan fails and it all goes bang!), but there's definitely something wrong as needle never used to budge. It's also bugging the hell out of me as I've spent a fair bit of time and cash trying to fix it.
