• Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 01 1.6 petrol - starting problem 15 Nov 2013 (Forum)
  I assume that fuel, spark or both are not being commanded by the ECU. After 4 to 5 seconds engine actually begins to 'fire' and will then run but runs a bit hesitantly / varying idle speed for a couple of seconds as though something is being adjusted. After this engine runs OK and drives well. Occasionally the engine will start on the first turn of the key!

  For the last few years steam special trains have run in July/August from Crewe to Scarborough.  It has been worth a short trip to watch the return run up the 1 in 100 gradient from Huddersfield to the Standedge Tunnel, the loco (and firemen!) working hard to haul over a dozen coaches up the gradient, the sound of the exhaust audible from a long distance.

  I suggested a guaranteed Reman replacement throttle body. They put this on today and it still will not run HELP Please. This is a K11 - no distributer 2001-2 Chris

  Its all back together but it just wont fire. when i turn it over it seems to drain the fuel from the filter. if i put some easy start down it does start but then stops obviously when the easy start runs out. iv read somewhere that i will need to put the injectors out of the other head into the replacement one. is this right ?? my friend has the snap on solus, can i re code the injectors thats in it off that ???

  I have a ford escort van 1.8 diesel in the last week it has started acting up if you let it idle for a while the engine will start running rough then stall it sounds like there is a noise coming from the clutch housing,sometimes there is no accelleration foot on the floor in first gear doing 5 mph then all of a sudden it kicks in and your off like a rocket,when it stalls it starts again and it runs ok for a while,I had the filter housing changed last year as it had a leak and had a new tank fitted as the old one had rust holes in it,so I am not sure what to do,I tried taking it for a run on the motorway thinking it had some kind of blockage and it seemed to work but now its doing its thing again.so not sure where to start

  hi hope someone can help. i have had my vectra 1.8 2001 model for about a year and had no problems untill now. i used the car around 3 weeks ago and it just cut out at traffic lights it would not start for 10 mins with the light with spanner flashing then it would start and run for 2 mins then run on 3 cylinders then cut out again, it did this 3 times then run fine for a couple of weeks then did the same again, very random, i have replaced the ecu and the coil pack. i have gone out today to use the car and it wont start at all and the light with spanner and the light with the engine on it are flashing rapidly. could it be the airflow sensor?

  If you rev up to 2-3000 it runs better but the throttle seems less responsive than usual. It seems to run reasonably when warmed up. Similar fault happened once or twice last year at a similar time of year but mysteriously disappeared...

  hi ,ive just bought an Xsara hdi 2001 ,the same day I had the stop light and beeping come on and car wouldn't start and noticed fuel pump was not priming so took it back and they replaced pump in tank and all was well till next day,when tried to start first thing stop light and beeping was back also was running very groggy on tick over then died so tried again and same happened but noticed temp gauge was on nothing then 90 then stayed at 0 and fan was running, so left it for a minute or so ticking over groggy and beeping and flashing stop ended gauge still on 0 and revs returned to normal and could rev smoothly and every time today starting and running was fine with no lights /beeping so any help would be appreciated ,I'm suspecting it will do same on the first start tomorrow 8-O ,cheers guys

  On the final return leg home of a wet saturday shopping trip the orange engine block light came on and the car started running as though on only three cylinders. It had been an afternoon of stop/start driving between various shopping destinations but it wasn't until the journey home that the problem occured almost immediately.

  I bought this escort with a suspected water pump and thermostat gone, i changed water pump, cam belt, drive belt as it was cracked, still did not start and it was blowing the water out of reservoir, so i changed the head gasket, run a flat edge along head and it was straight, put it all back together and gave it an oil change, it started but lots of white smoke comin out of exhaust, took it for a run after running it half hour and it was blowing white smoke out, checked dipstick and its clean oil, checked coolant and it does not seem to be going down, when you start it it takes a little while to start probably 4 -5th turn and only blows a little bit of smoke until you rev it then it blows out smoke, any help with this would be fantastic thanks

  Suddenly I noticed a "low battery" warning flash up on the dashboard. Afraid that it might be about to run flat, I started the engine and just let it run for about 10 minutes and then I didn't notice the warning again. Now, I have not been driving a lot recently, maybe no more than 100 miles in the last month, and I had only driven a couple of miles that day, and not at all for the previous couple of days.

  I am considering buying a used Volvo V50 2.0d, either S or Sport model. I currently run a V W Passat 1.9Tdi 100hp, which now has 167,000 miles on. I have not had a minutes trouble with the Passat. Prior to running the Passat I have run 3 Golfs, all having around 140,000 on them when I got rid and again I did not have a moments bother with any of them.

  Hi, I have had a problem with my xantia smoking on start up, and lumpy running for 20sec then it settles down and drives as sweet as a nut. But if I am stuck in traffic with it idling for any length of time then accelerate I get a big cloud of smoke out of the exhaust it then clears and all is ok.i don't have to top the oil up between services so it is not burning much.

  I have a Volkswagen LT35 2.5 TDI which has been running well until it started making a tapping sound intermitently, however i came in after a run and found that when the van was at idle its sounds really rough and tapping however when i rev the engine the noise goes away, i drve the van again to see if the power is there and it is but soon as i idle it the horrid noise comes back, since then i took the front timing cover off and found that the timing belt was really loose, so suspect its slipped some teeth, the van still runs but im not going to and revs up with the noise going away, it think its slipped a couple of teeth, how likely is it that theres valve damage?

  and would a bit - it only is a bit - of oil smoke make a car fail disastrously on emissions? There is no guarantee that the car hasn't been abused, run dry of oil or something, in the past, but it runs very well. If anyone has experience of this engine I would be grateful for information.

  Hi guys The temperature gauge on my ZX TD has been running slightly cool recently, around 80 - 85C instead of the 90 - 100C I believe is normal. As it was overdue, I renewed the coolant, and the thermostat (which I suspected might be the cause). I let the car idle for around 20-30 mins, sometimes running it up to 2000rpm.

  Help needed please - my tdci 115 focus has been running a bit lumpily in third recently and today when driving in traffic in I think 2nd gear at about 2000rpm, several times when I took my foot off the accelerator the engine ran on & even tried to increase the speed!

  Now I need a replacement - I have to have: 7 seats I want: Not to break down on the hard shoulder of the motorway Not to spend a fortune on running costs - petrol/repairs I have up to 9 grand to spend but I am open to creative suggestions and would like to spend less if I could reasonably get away with it. It's hard to get excited about this kind of purchase but it would be nice.

  There is a 'purge' outlet on top of the engine that a hose goes over, and the other end goes into a medium sized round disc/canister.Out of this canister there is two normal black hoses that go somewhere????? anyway i pulled off the blue hose on the engine purge valve and now everything seems to run good. car pulls away well and does not seem to run lumpy. I took car on a quick run and when i got back and parked up,lifted bonnet and then some smoke was coming from somewhere and after a little while eventually stop (like oil was burning) now if my write up makes a bit of sense to you, can you advise if what i have done is ok??
