  • Passat diesel pump recall 5 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Hi all Just bought my first Passat, an S Estate TDi 130 '05 reg and picking it up on this week from the VW dealer. Read on the Forum about the recall (ref R/2004/211) concerning the possible breaking of diesel pump-cover bolts and subsequent fuel leak. How can I tell, besides asking the dealer, if this car has had the recall? Will it be marked in the service book? Anything else I should be looking for before handing over the balance?

  • Diesel Engine Air Filter Change interval 5 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Surely a slightly blocked filter is going to impact on fuel consumption to some extent, so any feed back on this subject would be much appreciated. Many thanks. Dude.
  • ULSD Diesel 3 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Or that ULSD was pushed at a cheaper price... perhaps that's why some soopermarkets are able to "absorb" the cost of the tax hike - the fuel vendors have been saving the difference since... any comments / opinions?

  • HJ doubting diesel 29 Apr 2008 (Forum)
In HJ's Saturday Telegraph column today he comments to a reader that he is getting so many reports of failed DMFs/clutches, injection pumps, injectors, turbos, intercoolers and EGR valves on diesels that he wonders whether overall running costs may be cheaper for petrol engined cars. Now I don't agree with HJ on everything he writes but it was EGR valve problems (and mis-fueling concerns) that put me off a diesel C Max last year.
  • Vauxhall Zafira B (2005 - ) - 2007/57 Models - Diesel Engine Problems? 5 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Considering to buy a 2007/57 2.0 diesel automatic. However, I am disappointed to read several owner reviews on What Car? complaining of diesel engine problems. Do any HJ list members have problems with recent model Zafira diesel autos?
  • Petrol/Diesel (Again) 26 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Hi All After becoming almost "obsessed" with fuel prices after buying a petrol car, today I was amazed to see,at my local Tesco the difference between Petrol and Diesel down to 0.9p a litre. 93.9 for petrol and 94.8 for diesel.I know we are approaching hotter weather and usually has an effect on Diesel prices, but never seen it this low.
  • Rocket fuel ? the future ? 26 Oct 2005 (Forum)
The reaction takes place in a chamber just before the inlet valve of the engine. The expanding gases push down the piston in the same way as the burning of petrol or diesel. Valve timing will be different of course. The cylinder remains clean - doesn?t get carboned up. Exchange your used up tank at a refuelling station, and the spent fuel can be regenerated by heating it in the presence of hydrogen.
  • Diesel Reliability 29 Apr 2008 (Forum)
The cars I had prior to my diesels were all petrol and quite a few of them had mechanical failures. By comparison my diesel experience has been absolutely trouble free apart from that wretched Renault. The pay off is that in the roundest of terms I have saved circa £20K in fuel costs as a result.

  • Castrol 'R' versus chip oil 6 Feb 2007 (Forum)
I remember being told many years ago that Castrol R was a vegetable based oil, so if used cooking oil is used as a diesel fuel does it smell like R? And if not, why not?
  • Service Station Fuel Pumps 20 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Right, bit of a moan here, but a question lies within!! Went to fill up my 1995 Pug 306 at my local filling station on Sunday. The low fuel light was starting to flicker and when this comes on I know I have 5 - 7 litres left in the tank. Went to the diesel pump and filled the 60 litre tank to the brim. According to the pump, I got 59.78 litres in.
  • Toyota Avensis Trip Computer 19 Oct 2002 (Forum)
I would appreciate anyones views on the following I have a 2001 Avensis diesel with a trip computer as a standard item. The average indicated mpg, over a tank of full, is consistantly indicating 13% better fuel consumption than it actually is. The "Range" left to run on the remaining fuel in the tank, is out in as much as I estimate that it would run out well before the range says zero, wheras the instruction book says that there should be fuel left when it indicates zero.
