  • skoda superb 1.9TDi 130 PD - electrical fault? 25 Apr 2011 (Forum)
Also if the dealer cannot fit me in immediately and the glow plugs are not working is it alright to run the car?  I need to work on Wednesday and do a long trip of some 300 miles, would faulty glow plugs cause any damage if the car was used? Knowledgable comments would be welcome. PS the car starts fine and the oil, water etc are fine and the engine sounds fine.
  • Vauxhall Vectra B 1999 1.8 not sure if facelift - Vectra cuts out after 5 mins 15 Apr 2011 (Forum)
Hiya i have an annoying problem. My Vectra cuts out after 5-6 mins tops as if its run out of petrol. Its not the petrol pump or the relay as both have been changed and made no difference. Have had breakdown out but they were  found no error codes. The ECU light isnt on. After it dies out it takes a while to restart.
  • Ford Focus - speaker replacement -- surely this can't be true? 22 Mar 2011 (Forum)
If this is true, this car is carp of the highest order. The list of things I don't like about it is running to a second page right now. People who rave about these cars must not have driven anything else other than an Astra, that's all I can say. I am *this* far away from taking a £1000 loss and buying *absolutely anything* Japanese, that's how annoyed I am with this dungheap.
  • Hyundai Tucson - Tucson diesel fuel consumption 18 Mar 2011 (Forum)
To be honest, even if these figures are correct, it won't put me off buying the car as it won't be doing huge mileages and in my view, 39mpg seems unrealistic for quite a big SUV which must have the drag coefficiency of a flying brick but I would be interested to hear the views of any other  contributors to this forum who run this model.
  • maybe an estate or hatchback - salary sacrifice car scheme 20 Feb 2011 (Forum)
In the end I made my own spreadsheet to crunch the numbers ad am so intrigued now as to be consulting an accountant to take a professionals advice to see if this scheme would be worthwhile for me. Basically I reckon I can run a vw golf twist for £216 per month over 3 years inclusive of tax, maintenance, insurance, etc.  which I think is a good deal. I estimate it would cost £302 per month gross but would be saving ~£90 per month in tax and NI contributions.
  • 1999 VW Polo 1.9D (mk4) - cold spot/smoke 20 Jan 2011 (Forum)
When I first bought my Polo it vibrated quite alot on tick over and got noisier, and so decide to give it an overhall.Firstly I changed the diesel filter/air filter and oil and oil filter replaced the timing belt and tensioner  aux belt and hydraulic valve lifters when doing this amongst other things  I had to remove the righthand engine mount under the car and noticed the nut and bolt connecting to the engine was undone and rattling then when I got to changing the cam belt I set the diesel pump sprocket at TDC and noticed the timing was out on the fltwheel mark  anyway put everything back together, but for some reason the car has developed a coldspot when first starting and within the coldspot it chucks out loads off smoke,so somewhere along the long it has got to be something to do with the idle booster from cold or in that area but dont know how to set it up.The engine runs ok once its is warmed up and has curd the vibration. Can anyone explain to me how to set the injector pump idle booster or cold start up.
  • ford focus estate,diesel, 1.8litre, 1999 - Engine will not start 15 Jan 2011 (Forum)
Have fuel in tank and good battery. No fuel leaks anywhere on the engine. Car runs beautifully normally and have never had a provblem with it since I bought it 4 years ago, it has 130K on the clock. I have so far released the fuel pipe on the in side of the filter(rhside of filter). have cranked engine and no fuel from this pipe, I have inserted a tube into the fuel pipe and sucked through fuel so no blockage there.
  • Ford Focus - Focus 1.6 Zetec MK1 2001 - Temperature Gauge Jump 25 Oct 2010 (Forum)
I've just bought a 2001 Ford Focus with 115k on the clock (I know that could be my problem)! Anyway the car runs well and I was hoping it would give me a couple of years of trouble free (or relatively inexpensive) motoring. Over the last few days the car has developed a problem with the temperature gauge jumping straight to the red.
  • Toyota Avensis (1997 - 2002) - 01 2.0 Faulty Tail Light 3 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Does it sound as simple as a broken wire from the off side to the near side? If so is it just as simple as running a fresh wire from one plug to the other? Out of the bundle of wires, does anyone know which colour one to aim for? Cheers.
  • Ford Ka - Did my Ka really get a 1st service? 2 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Hi all, I looked at the oil quite a few times when running in my new petrol 1.25 59 plate Fiat Ka. It always looked brand new up until the last 2 or 3,000 miles. Then it started to look slightly dirty. Still really clean compared to say a diesel for example though.
  • Audi A3 TDI - Audi long-life service intervals 15 Aug 2010 (Forum)
My driving style has not changed and neither has my commute. Previous experience in running a Golf GT TDI suggests that somewhere approaching 20,000 miles between services is not unreasonable.  The local Audi dealer is effectively saying if the car says 1,600 miles till the next service, then this must be the case.
  • Ford Focus - 2003 Ford Focus TDCi - Oil 28 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Should I worry about having EDGE 5W40 in my car? Will it cause damage? Will it affect fuel ecomony (thicker at running temp = engine working harder)? Should I request that they put in oil which meets the specification or am I getting too fussy?
  • Re-occurring defect 9 Jun 2010 (Forum)
Last year my daughter bought a 10 year old car from a dealer, all seemed well for a while then the head gasket started weeping into one of the cylinders causing rough running 'til the water had been cleared.  The dealer took the car back and replaced the head gasket (I assume) and all was well for the last six months.  Now the problem is back.  I went with her when she bought the car and did the usual checks for foam under the oil filler cap etc, which of course was clear and still is, nor any sign of water in the oil.
  • Audi A4 B7 - VCA fuel consumption - conspiracy theory 29 May 2010 (Forum)
Dealer is playing (very) dumb and the VCA can't explain it either.  Also seems the people who can run the standard test to prove the point, won't do it without Audi's co-operation.  Any help anyone can give me would be much appreciated... (OK, so If can afford the car why am I obessing about the fuel burn....it just makes me so angry!!)
  • Skoda Octavia - Salesman after me 20 May 2010 (Forum)
I bought a second hand car from a main dealer last week, paid cash and took delivery a few days ago  - now running fully insured and taxed. However, the young salesman who sold me the car has been trying to get in touch, I had four missed calls on my phone. When I called him back he said I needed to come in to sign some more paperwork and 'go through some important things' related to FSA requirements and  Insurance.
  • Jeep Cherokee 2.5CRD - Blown fuel injectors 16 May 2010 (Forum)
The car drives normally in between these episodes - no loss of power, timing issues, stalling or change in engine noise. There are no warning lights or signs of engine malfunction (normal running temp, fuel economy etc). My  garage believes that there is a buildup of pressure in the engine causing the fuel injectors to suddenly blow but noone knows why this is happening now - I have had the car for 4 years with no problems before this.
  • Ford Fiesta 2003 Duratec - Engine noises 9 May 2010 (Forum)
It runs fine although it does sound slightly wheezy at idle, and I’m sure I can feel a slight misfire on acceleration occasionally.   NB all filters, plugs etc replaced 8K ago with ford parts.
  • citroen xsara estate v reg - 2.0hdi cutting out 26 Mar 2010 (Forum)
It's pretty scary on motorway when this happens and you have to  make an emergency dive for the hard shoulder. Engine management light has only stayed on with car running once- had codes read, came back as 0340- cam/crank shaft synchro problem- have changed both sensors, also changed the brake light switch. Absolutely no difference. Any one any ideas as to what else to check/replace?
  • Renault Megane 1600cc 1997 - engine temperature fluctuating 16 Mar 2010 (Forum)
I think the guage itself is OK as it responds consistently. I've tried it without a thermostat and it runs OK, but of course never warms up. If  ticking over in traffic, it eventually reaches just over 1/2 and the fan kicks in as expected. So it looks to me like a thermostat problem, and to make sure, I even bought another genuine Renault thermostat, but the problem persists.
