  • Volkswagen Polo II (1991 - 1994) - 1992 1050cc - burnt ht lead 4 Dec 2007 (Forum)
I have just sorted the non starting Polo that my daughter runs around in for the second time in 3years the HT lead to the centre of the Distributor cap has burnt away at the dissy cap end (leaving only the outer insulation boot of the HT cable holding it in place). As its happened again I wonder if anyone else has had this or similar.I check that the HT leads are pushed home and tight often , I did this only a few weeks ago for the MOT check and did not notice any burning ect.
  • 89 polo stalling... update 4 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Keith wrote: >> These cars always seem to have their original plug leads when I have looked at them. But when people do replace them with cheap aftermarket items they forget that the plugs now need the little screw on tops that are not required for the original leads. This may not cause a huge problem until something else is slightly out and then the problem will be eggagerated.

  • unleaded petrol 22 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Heard today that unleaded petrol may be worse for the atmosphere than leaded. I'm no scientist but I am given understand the benzine causes more damage than the lead......anyone with any real knowledge on this?
  • Jump Start Puzzle 24 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Battery on parents car (Proton 1.5 'thing') died overnight, it's all sorted now, bought and fitted a new one for them. But trying to start it from my car using jump leads still resulted in it turning over slowly and not firing. This was with the battery out on charge, with jump leads from my car directly onto the Proton's battery leads. When a new battery was fitted it fired up first time.
  • Cat damage with leaded petrol 13 Aug 2005 (Forum)
With reference to a Q & A in last week's HJ Telegraph column from someone planning to drive to North Africa, what would be the physical effect of using leaded petrol in a catalysed vehicle? At some point the active material in the cat is presumably neutralised or destroyed and it has to be replaced to meet the MoT test, but are there any side effects such as bad running or confusion for the ECU once the damage is done?

  • Spark Plugs-blue flashes visible. Astra 25 May 2005 (Forum)
Now I've just been out to the car (it is 12am) and very dark, cold and damp, so I thought I'd check to see if there was any High Voltage arking coming from the HT leads and I noticed I could see intermittent small blue flashes coming from the area where the end of the HT leads make contact with the spark plugs. The sparking seems to be occuring across all the HT lead contacts just above the spark plugs.

  • Mitsubishi Shogun/Pajero (1991 - 1999) - 1996 3.0 ignition system 2 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Hi, 96 Shogun 3.0ltr 24 valve Does anyone have a diagram or info as to which plug lead goes to which coil pack. I have a misfire, and previous owner has marked up leads and coil packs with numbers. However, the leads and the coil packs are not corresponding to the markings and if i change so they do, then it will not start.
  • Urgent Focus engine mgnt light question? 5 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Hello, My dad has bought a Focus, 2002 2.0 Ghia, he went to clean under the bonnet (OK, perhaps unwise) and disconnected the plug leads. He clearly did not reconnect one leade properly because the car ran on three cyls when started, he checked and found the loose plug lead and now it runs fine on four cyls however the engine managment light is on and the dealer want £50 to reset it.
  • Can you recommend a good, small jump start pack? 22 Nov 2017 (Ask HJ)

  • E30 318i / 1994 / Tourer. - Fluctuating engine,lights & fan after new HT Leads 19 Feb 2013 (Forum)
I had a problem with my E30 318i stuttering, and thought it may be a fuel problem, but before replacing the fuel filter, I thought I'd replace the spark plugs and HT leads (number two lead had a burn hole in it), these had not been renewed for several years.   About a week or so ago, I replaced the spark plugs and HT Leads, barr one, the number one spark lead (with the sensor cable on it), after having disconnected the negative wire to the battery 'first'.

  • Faltering Micra 13 May 2003 (Forum)
I own a 1993 Nissan Micra 1.0 with 66,000 miles on the clock which has recently started faltering slightly when accelerating (particularly in 2nd and 3rd gear). The engine has also begun idling unevenly. All hoses etc. seem okay but I have checked the HT leads and found that one of them has some oil at the end along with a small quantity of oil around the top of the spark plug at the base of the hole. The rest of the leads appear clean. The HT lead seems the most likely problem but does anyone have any idea what may be causing this?
  • Omega: plugs, leads & distributor 20 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Vx Omega 2.0 16V What HT leads should I use? Vauxhall ones or Halfords, or Bosch or some other? Same question for spark plugs, how do you know what plugs to use because the Vauxhall ones have no ratings on them. How do I know if the distributor is any good, I am going to remove it tomorrow, how do I remove it?
